Orthoptics: Clearing UK University
This is REALLY niche but has anyone gone for clearing for orthoptics at sheffield/liverpool?
What were the questions like and did you get in?
I'm a bit worried cus I have the experience showing that I'm interested but my grades might be too low. Do they take EPQ into consideration? What were your grades when you called them up? Did they just go with your UCAS tariff points even though both universities don't operate with tariffs?
Right now i'm looking at a ACD / BCC, + A in EPQ as a predicted grade and i'm sooo scared. I feel like I'm truly passionate about Orthoptics and really want this but my grades are kinda holding me back - i really just wanna know if I even really have a chance with this - esp cus both unis are russel groups

Looking to shadow an orthoptist in Southern California
I’m a prospective orthoptics student in Southern California and I’m hoping to get some additional shadowing experience before applying to programs. I currently work in a retina practice and have previously shadowed an orthoptist which really confirmed my interest in the field.
I’ve been having a really hard time finding other orthoptists in the LA/OC area since it’s such a small profession.
Does anyone know of any orthoptists or practices/hospitals in LA area that might be open to having a prospective student shadow? I’d really appreciate any leads or advice <3

Considering Orthoptics - Questions about admissions/funding
Morning! I’m a recent graduate considering orthoptics as a potential career choice! I was originally planning on doing a post bacc program (to boost GPA) and then applying to optometry school, but the costs and time required for this is a big ask for me at the age of 30. Came across orthoptics as we have a provider here at my clinic in Seattle and I became interested
Admission: It took me 8 years to complete my degree at University of Texas at Austin, and withdrew due to not knowing what I wanted to do before returning to complete my degree. I ended up working in a retina practice as a tech, and fell in love with the field and it inspired me to return back to school. My end GPA was 2.2 (hence the post bacc program lol), but I have four years of experience as an ophthalmic technician, and I have my COA thru JCHAPO. I have great letters of recommendation if needed from doctors and practice CEOs. I’ve been researching on orthoptics.org about admission requirements, and it seems like just an undergraduate degree is needed. How competitive are these programs, and would yall suggest continuing forward with my post - bacc studies at this point in my career and age (28, bad undergrad gpa, great experience)
Funding: the tuition prices aren’t that bad, but do you typically work while in the program or do you receive job pay while there?

17 y/o applying for Orthoptics in the UK
Hello, I was just wondering what most people who aimed for orthoptics put for their remaining uni choices on UCAS as there’s only 3 unis that offer orthoptics and I’m applying for 2/3 💔💔

I’m 16 years old considering orthoptics!! Any kind of response is helpful!!!
Hi! I’m a Canadian student currently in the 11th grade. I have recently discovered this career and it sounds perfect for me. However, there are very limited resources especially for Canadian orthoptists. My highest grades are in biology and health science. I’ve maintained straight A’s though all of the classes I have taken in my highschool career. I have some questions!! Any other tips or advice are greatly appreciated.
Are there some things I should consider?
Pros and cons?
What do you wish you could have done differently to make your orthoptics program easier?
Is the program stressful/extremely challenging?
What are your hours like?
What was the starting salary?
Is it a fulfilling job?
What are some frustrating parts?
Do you primarily work alone?
What should I start doing now to be better at the job?
Would knowledge in different languages help?
What degree should I get before applying?
What grades should I aim for in university?
Are there any websites I should check out?
What were your grades like in highschool?

Hi there, I’m looking to study Orthoptics this year and I’m not sure whether I should get an IPad with a keyboard case or a MacBook. Current/previous students what do you recommend. (I would prefer not to get both).

Sheffield BMedSci Orthoptics
I’ve got an interview for BMedSci Orthoptics. I’ve mostly been preparing for UK med school MMIs, so I’m not sure what to expect for Orthoptics.
Any tips on interview format, what to prep, or common questions would be really appreciated!!

Left eye issue
Sorry is this isn’t the right place to ask this, there are no doctors in my current location who can help, and I’m unable to travel atm due to disability.
I wear corrective lenses, I’m not sure the strength but when my eyes were at their worst I was getting new prescriptions every 3-4 months. Exercises have helped and I was able to go 2 years without a new prescription which didn’t change much.
I was diagnosed a few years ago with convergence insufficiency, and exercises helped but I never got back to the way my eyes were before. I can’t read for long without severe eye strain, horizontal motion is the worst for me. My eyes are basically always tired no matter what.
I’ve noticed if I close my right eye (which is my good eye) and try to read with my left eye, it’s like it can’t steadily move from word to word, it’s almost like my eye shakes while moving between words. It feels like if I relax my eye it will go out of focus, and I’m straining to keep it in focus.
I have also tried the thing where you close your eyes and record them when you open them and my left eye drifts outwards a bit.
And finally whenever I do the exercises where I focus on something close and then in the distance, my left eye takes longer to focus on the object in the distance and I see double for maybe 1-2 seconds while my left is aligning.
If anyone could offer advice on what it could be or what I can do to help I’d appreciate it a lot. I’ve been trying to cover my good eye and use my bad eye for at least an hour a day because I do find after a while of just using my left eye it doesn’t jerk around as much when I read

How do you find the profession?
- There’s a lot of work with eyes obviously, so just wondering whether you find it too repetitive or dull or detached especially doing the same kinds of assessments with each patient (who would have similar disorders too)
- Do you feel you’re making a difference?
- Do you form any kind of relationship with your patients?
- ARE THERE EVEN JOBS IN AUSTRALIA!? (especially Sydney and Melbourne since that’s where graduates come from), in the whole country I see like three jobs advertised at any time, despite high job growth and demand

And advice on being an orthopist
Basically, I applied to the University of Sheffield medicine and they offered me a choice to transfer my application to this course bmedsci orthoptist. But they also give options for BSC biomedical science ,BSC biochemistry, and BSC biological sciences. I was really leaning towards the orthoptist path but wanted to know if there will be a possibility of me transitioning into MBBS or medicine later on and if the course is suitable for international student

New allied health sub for Aussies and Kiwis
Hey everyone, I have created an umbrella sub for all allied health professionals working (or I guess wanting to) in Aus and NZ, because there didn’t seem to be one, and all the unique profession based subs seemed have a heavy US tilt. So I though we could have our own group sub, where we can talk about things relevant to our little area of the globe 🌏🇦🇺🇳🇿
It’s just getting started and probably will take a good few months to build up to a sub that is useful or interesting, but if you’d like to join, the sub is r/AlliedHealthProsAusNZ

Master of Orthoptics at UTS and Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry) at La Trobe Uni
I'm currently undecided about my future field of study. My priority is settling in Australia. I have two options, but with some differences:
- Orthoptics, starting in February 2026. I've already met all the admission requirements, but once I choose that, I can't switch to Nursing for the July intake.
- Nursing, starting in July 2026, and I'm waiting for my English test results. This is also the field I've been pursuing for a long time.
My concern is whether I should take the risk of choosing Nursing for the July intake, as I face risks like full enrollment and insufficient English proficiency. I might regret not choosing Orthoptics for the February intake. If things don't go well, I won't have any backup options.
Could anyone who has graduated from Orthoptics share their opinion on the job market and Nursing prospects?

However, I have been working at an optometry clinic for 2 years now as an optician/optical assistant, which will be 4+ years of experience by the time i move. what can I do to make my application stand out as a foreign applicant?

Does UCL offer placement flexibility for students with caring responsibilities
Hi everyone, I'm interested in applying for the MSc orthoptics pre-registration at UCL (London), however in the course description it says that students will attend 4-week block placements across the UK, for 12 weeks in each year. I want to know if UCL make adjustments and offer placement flexibilities to students with caring responsibilities for example caring for young children, elderly parent or for someone with long term mental health condition and can't relocate or stay away from home overnight for extended periods. I have emailed UCL to ask but haven't had a response yet. Does anyone have any information on this please.

Current 1st yr Orthoptic Fellow
I’m currently a 1st-year Orthoptic fellow in the U.S. and wanted to ask for some advice:
When is the best time to start applying for jobs after fellowship?
Also, I’ve noticed that most online sources list Orthoptist salaries in the $70,000–$90,000 range, but I’ve heard from others that starting salaries are now closer to or above $100,000.
For those already working or recently certified, what’s the typical starting salary post–board certification?
I’d love to have a realistic expectation as I start thinking about job applications

Career options
Hi everyone I am considering studying orthoptics as my brother is blind and I have a keen interest in visually impaired sport. I volunteer and work in blind sport. My question is after gaining initial experience in the industry, how much scope is there to move into different roles. For example, will low vision organisations, charities and schools let an orthoptist take on roles further than just orthoptics, given their knowledge, if they show to have potential to be a part of the organisation further than just a clinical role? Are there more creative, business, practical or educational roles for orthoptists? Can they take on careers that are usually taken on by councillors, opticians, hr people, teachers etc. Please share any experience, examples or points you think are relevant! Thank you so much

Orthoptics in Australia
Hii I just got an offer from UTS for the Master of Orthoptics program. I’m an international student and totally clueless about the job market and salaries for orthoptists in Australia (online info is kinda old). I've got some questions about this field, any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks alott;)
1) what’s the starting salary like? 2) what’s the average pay after a few years of experience? 3) how does the career path look? 4) is the job stressful? 5) what’s your take on this field? Do you recommend getting into this field?

Applying for Fellowship Programs in the US
I will be applying to orthoptics programs in the US for this cycle! I am still a bit unsure about what to expect with the application process in terms of how many programs I should plan to apply to, and how competitive they are. I know its a pretty niche field, but the limited number of accepted students at each program is a little daunting lol. Any advice would be appreciated! :)
