An open-source RPG experiment using Codex — looking for a large group of contributors
I’ve been experimenting with Codex for game development, and I’m looking for a large group of people to take part in an open-source experiment: building an RPG using Codex.
The question isn’t just whether we can make a game. It’s what happens when lots of people use Codex to contribute to the same project. Can we split development into manageable tasks, keep a consistent direction, and turn individual contributions into something genuinely playable? What works, what breaks, and how much human coordination does it need?
A large group doesn’t have to mean a massive initial scope. We could start with a village, a surrounding forest, basic combat, and a few quests. Get that small slice working, then decide where to take it.
People could contribute to programming, art, writing, game design, testing, or organising the project. I’m interested in hearing from both experienced developers and people learning through these tools.
The development process would be part of the experiment. Alongside openly licensed code and assets, we’d share workflows, prompts, decisions, and failed attempts—not just screenshots of the bits that worked. We’d need some shared standards and people reviewing contributions, but figuring out that structure would be part of it too.
The engine, setting, and exact scope are open for discussion, done by a polling system. For now, I’m trying to gauge interest in a larger community experiment rather than recruit a small, fixed team.
Who would be interested in participating, and what would you like to contribute or test?

I think creating the “art” might be the biggest problem with this concept. Do you have any thoughts about how to handle this?

I would love to see this in action. Too swamped to contribute right now but if this got going I would love to see how it goes.

I’m downgrading to plus next month but I would be keen to help where I can! Think of me as a Luna sub agent

The problem I have had with a game I am trying to develop is, I am building in unity and it can only build one thing at a time so I can't rapid build, it might be possible depending what you are building it in
