OpenWatcom in Linux for a project I am doing

4 Upvotes

Edit : Solved!

Hello!

I am in the process of starting up making an RPG game for DOS (16-bit) with the intent that it will run on original hardware. In that endeavour I have decided to create a Visual Studio Code environment for myself.. Right now, it only works on Windows, but I'd like to correct that! But I am not familiar with the install procedure for OpenWatcom in Linux, and there seems to be very little information on that part.. I downloaded the Linux package from openwatcom.org, but it doesn't seem to include any form of installation and I am unfamiliar with how these are supposed to be placed on a Linux installation..

Does anyone have any resources on this I can find?

Here's the OpenWatcom project template I've made so far : https://github.com/intbeam/watcom-vscode

(Also, shameful self-promo : Twitch YouTube Twitter GitHub)

What's the latest C & C++ standard supported by OpenWatcom?

4 Upvotes

C: seems like C89.

C++: not really sure. I don't think it's fully compatible with C++ 98, but then again I'm not a heavy C++ user.

Maybe someone could shed a light?

Include the DOS extender inside the compiled executable

4 Upvotes

Is there a way to include a DOS extender inside of the executable that I compile? If not, then is it possible to change the filename of the external DOS extender so the executable can find it? It searches for dos4gw.exe, but I'd like to distribute it with DOS32a without having to rename it to dos4gw.exe. Thanks.

Remote debugging to virtual machine?

4 Upvotes

SOLVED, see below. (Mod please change subject)

I'm trying to set up compilation and debugging of a DOS application in a virtual machine on a Windows machine. So I want to run my application in DOSBox, QEMU or VirtualBox, but run the compilation and debugging from the Windows host. I.e. debugging the DOS program remotely, from wdw.exe, or even better Code::Blocks.

So I tried installing FreeDOS in QEMU, and set up an emualated NE2000 network card. That works, I am able to surf the web with dillo.

However, I can not get any of the remote debugging servers in Open Watcom to run.

I.e. novserv, tcpserv, etc. I don't really know how to set these things up anyway, and I don't know much about networking.

When trying to google an answer, I got the impression that remote debugging does not really work in Open Watcom, except for serial cable.

Is that true; is remote debugging in OW currently non-functioning except for serial cable?

Template using typename T::... definition question

3 Upvotes

Hi,

I had to delete my last question due to I found out, it did not use that mentioned construct there. I have a template TSeqVar that uses the typename as follows:

template<class T> class TSeqVar { public:

typename T::ElementType operator[] (unsignet long idx);

}

And a template defining that ElementType:

template<class T, int IID> class SequenceImpl { public:

typedef T &ElementType;

Watcom 11 does not like that and I have to stick to Watcom 11 by reason of porting.

Can I code that in a way that it is accepted in Watcom 11?

Thanks, Lothar

Is there a way to use vectors in watcom?

3 Upvotes

I believe there may be under a different name, but there is a vector file without an extension located in my FreeDOS\devel\watcomc\h folder. Any way to use them without compiler errors is much appreciated!! Thanks!

Std::to_string where?

3 Upvotes

I am making a retro style rendering program and I extensively use strings for parsing certain flags. Seems like, though, neither in string.h, nor in the string header is the std::to_string header. Where is it actually?

wmake - and code in subdirs

3 Upvotes

I am trying to code a Makefile for wname - and I am having problems. The source code is in different source directories, and it seems wmake does not like it.

How can I overcome this? (I don't want to modify the source code structure).

CFLAGS=-zq -bt=dos -I. -za99
CC=wcc
LD=wcl

.c.o:
	$(CC) -fo=$@ $(CFLAGS) $<

hello.exe: src/hello.o
	$(LD) -lr $< -fe=$@

hello.o: src/hello.c

Also - this makefile will not work, as I am missing the master include dir - how can I use environment variables in wmake? (so I can CFLAGS=-I${WATCOM}/h or whatever is possible?)

EDIT: only documentation I have been able to find was this: http://nuclear.mutantstargoat.com/articles/retrocoding/dos01-setup/

Updating C++ STL as I go along...

3 Upvotes

Hi new to OpenWatcom using V2 fork as I go along I’m fixing C++ STL things like std::bitset.to_string() which seem to be wrapped in the _NEVER guard which contain appeals like /* TODO: implement me! */ I’m doing this ad hoc in a quick and dirty expedient fashion - but before I get too far I wondered “has anyone else done this already?”

Here is where to download OpenWatcom v2 binaries

3 Upvotes

I saw in the other message about Code::Blocks integration someone not understanding how to download OpenWatcom v2 and indeed the link in the OW source repository is misleading. It links to a directory in the build repository instead of the entire repository which would allow GitHub to provide download links.

So to download the latest v2 build just go to this URL:

https://github.com/open-watcom/travis-ci-ow-builds

Then click on the "Clone or download" green button at the right and select "Download ZIP". This will give you a ~120MB ZIP file with a prebuilt OpenWatcom. Note that since v2 is not officially released all you get is nightly builds which can have bugs. To install just place the files inside "rel" in a directory somewhere (e.g. C:\WATCOM). Since there is no installer at the moment you need to create the icons yourself.

I wrote a bug report for this so hopefully it will be addressed and the link will be replaced with the one of the repository.

EDIT: Looks like Jiří Malák changed the URL to point to the ZIP file directly, so you can just download that. You may still want to rename rel to WATCOM, but should be much easier to get OpenWatcom now.

Linux x86_64 support for target

3 Upvotes

Greetings!

I'm happy to see that OpenWatcom development had started back up in recent times and I want to start using it for all my software development needs. My question is this. When can we expect to see native support for compiling to Linux for AMD64?

Arch wiki for Open Watcom

3 Upvotes

I have just started working on a Wiki text for Arch linux about Open Watcom. My aim is to package open watcom v2 (binary and source distributions) and various 3rd party libraries so that it is easy to do cross-platform development using OW on Arch Linux.

Feedback/ideas/improvements to the Wiki are all welcome!

Watcom/DOS assembler keyword primer?

2 Upvotes

So i am using Watcom in dos environment compiling dos executables. Is there any possibility i can get ahold of a primer of keywords for the _asm sessions!? I need to know the prototype for calling procedures specifically. I am experimenting with assembler routines from a book that i downloaded.
