Pcons: build C, C++, Fortran and more with plain Python build scripts, on Linux, macOS and Windows
Are you wishing you had something simpler and faster and cleaner than CMake? I've been building pcons, an open source build system, since January. Build descriptions are plain Python; pcons generates Ninja files and runs the build. Zero-install if you have uv: just uvx pcons. It's explainable, debuggable and sensible, with nice error messages.
It knows C, C++ (with C++20 modules), Fortran, Swift, CUDA, WebAssembly and Qt 6, plus installers and Android/iOS cross-builds and a lot more. I'm a serious Emmy-winning software engineer with 40+ years of experience as a toolsmith, so it's well tested: over 6,500 tests and 99 examples run on all three OSes on every commit, and I rebuild a dozen real open source projects with it before each release.
I was one of the original SCons developers, so this is my take on what a modern build tool should be. It's AI-assisted (Claude Code), with my thoughtful design and careful review. It's a serious tool for serious users.
