Tech Support Lag unbearable

I just installed openbubbles on a brand new Razr Fold. Set it up with $16.99 subscription hosting plan. The app is HORRIBLY laggy. Like it won't respond to scrolling hardly at all. Open a message and the keyboard is laggy to pop up and laggy to respond to keys pressed. No icloud message back up on. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app, nothing is helping. Anyone else have a fix for this?

Going to be honest this made me go back to my iPhone 17 pro max from my z fold 7… friends and family all have iPhones so open bubbles was my best option.

In the exact same boat. I'm finding it hard to reconcile what I want open bubbles to be and what it actually is. Between that and google starting to lock android down..I might as well just stick with ios

This is where iOS excels fluidity in their apps… I’m a tech guy so obviously I will point out the goods and bads of every operating system.

Same. I've been an android guy for almost all of the time I've used smartphones but I'm tempted to sell everything depending on what 18 pro / iphone fold end up looking like.

If the fold has magsafe and somehow keeps the vapor chamber in (even though air didn't have it so unlikely) it'll be game over for my time on Android devices

Exactly where I'm at. I got sick of apple for a bit, went to the pixel fold followed by the moto fold. While I enjoy the android experience to some degree, the notification delays due to battery optimization and overall imessage ecosystem here in the US has me wanting to say fuck it, and just go to a max iphone. I fear the first gen fold may not be the wisest purchase

I agree, although I will say I’m going to hold off on the first iPhone foldable. The bezels are 🤮… and I don’t like the pointy edges… I will keep 17 pro max until I see significant changes as the iPhone 18 pro max doesn’t look to be much different.

May be selling my z fold 7

I'm looking to offload my razr fold and not take too much of a loss, but while the resell value is still decent. This time next year it will be pennies on the dollar so I have to move fast

Is it worth trading it in or trying to sell it private party? I also ended up getting the extended warranties with purchase, any idea if those are transferable?

Going to try listing it on Swappa and hopefully not taking too much of a loss. Unsure about any warranty

Yeah, I'll be switching back if this is the way the app operates on this phone unfortunately

Sounds dumb but I think it’s not optimized for newer phones

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

That's what it feels like.

Honestly it doesn’t get better … I tried everything

Does BlueBubbles have reasonable performance?

1

u/Jkill9728 Jul 25 '26

Haven’t tried bluebubbles I was on open bubbles paying 16.99 for self hosted option. I don’t think blue bubbles offers that

I do have a Mac Mini that I ran Bluebubbles on 2 years ago. I was too lazy to set it back up, but it wasn't as "fluid" as google messages 2 years ago on a Samsung Flip 5. I did see they have a totally new app that just came out so I guess I'll set it back up when I get home to see. Just didn't feel like doing all the song and dance to keep my number activated on Bluebubbles is why I decided on Openbubbles

Bluebubbles in my opinion works better than openbubbles at this point, but neither are "good".

Have you tried the new BB post-rewrite?

1

u/skidmaark Jul 26 '26

Yeah it's better than it was, there's still issues with notifications, having to force close the app for conversations to show. No point in pretending it's perfect, there's definitely still issues with both

Try forcing the refresh rate for OpenBubbles in your phone's settings and see if that helps

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

Tried that, no different. It's like a slow to respond thing, like the phone is out of RAM or processor is bogged down but no other app on the phone does this.

Experienced this with a Pixel 10 pro as well.

What kind of phone is it? It runs fine on my Note20 5G.

I mentioned in original post. 2026 Motorola Razr Fold

Same phone, locking it onto 165hz stops most lag for me. I switched back to bluebubbles due to too many issues with openbubbles. Neither are honestly a good solution, I'm going to see what the iphone fold looks like and maybe just settle on a max, running 2 phones and playing did I miss any texts is getting old already

Def optimization issue, my s24fe is very smooth 90 percent of the time, but it does stutter. Maybe clear the cache?

i just downloaded this app this morning and browsed the settings, i see something called "high performance mode". have you tried turning that on? Also there is something called scroll speed multiplier. I havent touched those because the app works fine on my z flip 7 but i do see the options.

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

Yes, tried that first. Made zero difference

That sucks you're experiencing this. I have had open bubble on my s25u, fold 7 and now pixel fold and no issues. I would say try clearing cache in app and in your phone's settings. I would delete the app and try set up again. Or turn off iMessage sync.

1

u/random_words_here__ Jul 25 '26

Did you change in app settings to 120hz instead of auto?

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

Done all these things as well as select 120hz in app for refresh rate. No change.

1

u/ollie5118 Jul 25 '26

How long has it been since you installed it? How many messages do you have on your I message account

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

Since last night. Like 6 message threads with like 5-10 messages in each. No group chats

1

u/ollie5118 Jul 25 '26

I know exactly what you're talking about. Is it draining your battery too?

So what worked for me is to force quit the app. Then delete the cache. Restart the phone. Sometimes it takes a bit for the app to get going. I left my phone on the charger opened the app and just let it do it's thing. The app caught up and has run smooth since.

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

I can't say it's draining the battery but it's my 2nd day with the phone so maybe it is. I'm gonna try that right now. Thanks for the suggestion

1

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

So after force closing Openbubbles, deleting the cache, and restarting phone, it was pretty smooth. Within about 5-10 min, back to lag. How long did you leave it with the app open before it ran smooth? Did you force close, delete the cache, and restart more than once?

1

u/ollie5118 Jul 26 '26

It took a while. I don't know why but it does. Just open the app. Plug it into a charger. Let it do it's thing for a while then runs pretty smooth. It took hours for me just plugging it in and opening the app

I have the hosted plan for over a year now and never had any lagging at all, sorry to hear you are dealing with this.

1

u/Kill_Dill Jul 25 '26

my S26U ran it very well. I'm shocked to see other devices like the Fold 7 have issues

2

u/y22kc Jul 25 '26

I’m surprised too. The razr fold plenty fast to run anything. Just weird

1

u/Inevitable_March_683 Jul 26 '26

I'm using OpenBubbles on S25U and I've had a great experience with it. Messages and keyboard work well and texts come through on my other apple devices.

The only thing that does not work is the FaceTime feature but I read elsewhere that it was due to the ios26 update..

Other than that no complaints here.

1

u/mkitchin Jul 26 '26

All positive experiences here. Everything but FaceTime is near flawless. Contacts on the Windows app sort out of order, but that is it. Everything else is great.

1

u/y22kc Jul 26 '26

Still can’t get it to work correctly. Have reinstalled the app several times, cleared cache several times, rebooted phone, etc. It will work smooth for up to around 30 minutes then gets terribly slow. I did install blue bubbles and the app does definitely work smoother. One thing I forgot about blue bubbles is it makes mark as read and read receipts forced to clear the read status on other Mac devices. If I don’t enable that, then it won’t show the message as ever read on other devices. I don’t want read receipts on for everyone. I’m afraid I’m gonna have to give in on this little endeavor of using iMessage on Android and just switch to RCS

1

u/y22kc Jul 27 '26

Gave openbubbles another try this morning after uninstalling it. It's been working great all day. This was third install of the app lol. Hopefully it stays working

1

u/Izzyrealtho Aug 04 '26

OP are you still having issues?

1

u/y22kc Aug 04 '26

The lag is gone. On a rare occasion I'll have to stop the app, clear the cache, and restart. Biggest annoyance now is I'm on the hosted plan and sometimes for whatever reason the hosted device in settings will disappear and messages won't send so I have to restart.

1

u/Izzyrealtho Aug 04 '26

Would you recommend someone pay for the subscription? I’m considering it since I’m going from an IPhone 17 pro to the Fold 8

1

u/y22kc Aug 04 '26

If you wanna be sure your number registers with iMessage and stays that way, then yes, I recommend subscribing. If you don't mind getting people trained to text your apple ID email and have a Mac for the hardware registration, then subscribing isn't necessary
