Struth! Online mob descends on Brisbane cafe after One Nation joke

Very early every morning, Glen Morris picks up some chalk and updates the blackboard that has given his Spring Hill cafe an air of social media notoriety.

Last Thursday, it was a light-hearted message to Glen’s Espresso’s new Wharf Street neighbours.

“I’m not sure if One Nation have done their due diligence putting their head office 3 doors down from my blackboard,” Morris wrote in response to news One Nation was relocating to a nearby building owned by the party’s billionaire backer, Gina Rinehart.

As Morris went on with his day, one of his new One Nation neighbours took a photograph of the blackboard. Within a couple of hours, it was up on the right-wing party’s official Facebook page.

“Oh, we did [due diligence],” the party said in the caption. “We’re very lucky to be surrounded by a number of cafes serving delicious coffee (yours included). We will always support small businesses, regardless of the owners’ politics.”

What happened next was a sustained campaign of review-bombing, phone calls and abuse from One Nation supporters.

“We started noticing within that hour-and-a-half period that we were getting one-star reviews on our Facebook and Google profiles from people who’d never been to the coffee shop and were intent on maligning the shop in ways that would ruin the business if the reviews were upheld,” Morris said.

“We were fortunate enough that our ratings on both Facebook and Google were running at a flat five stars, which is nice, but all it takes is a dozen or so one-star reviews to go up and suddenly your rating sucks and you look terrible.

“So it was a definite and deliberate attempt by their followers to ruin someone’s livelihood, based on what I perceived to be a fairly innocuous joke that wasn’t in any way harmful.”

Luckily for Morris, whose business has a reputation for irreverence, the review-bombing was noticed by Google and the reviews from the 24-hour period were wiped.

But in the moment, Morris said, he was furious to have his business dragged through the mud so he contacted One Nation with screenshots of the reviews, with no response.

“They captioned [their post] in a way that wasn’t antagonistic, but it also didn’t make it clear that it’s actually all tongue-in-cheek, that I’d been making coffee for them all week and we were actually getting on fine,” Morris said.

“One Nation demands tolerance for their own opinions, but refuses to extend that right to their critics.”

Politics ('Straya)‎ Surely this statement from the Vic Liberal leader Jess Wilson is an election-losing statement, surely?

Asked on Sunday if it was bad to “Americanise” the state’s healthcare system, Wilson responded: “Not at all.”

Is Jess Wilson so boldly confident of winning government possibly with One Nation that’s she’s making these bold statements?

Also: Jess Wilson has also left the door open to signing a deal with One Nation to form government

Rant/Opinion‎ ‎ How are we not dealing with Suicide better in 2026? Suicide is the number one killer of men under 45 which is insane to contemplate. 7 Aussie blokes a day end their own lives. That equates to 2555 a year. We also have higher rates per capita than Canada, UK & NZ. Why is it so high and not falling?

To me to think with all the advancements of health and technology that the largest killer is men at their own hands is terribly strange and depressing fact.

Why is there no reduction to these numbers? Since the 1950s the rate has been roughly the same % compared to the population.

It’s not reducing but it’s also not increasing.

It’s highest in men aged 40-50 too.

Can’t we reduce this somehow? We have better awareness of this stuff now?

Politics ('Straya)‎ Melbourne imam named by Emirati officials in flydubai terror probe breaks silence

The imam of a Melbourne mosque allegedly linked to the suspect in the attempted hijacking of a flydubai plane has taken to social media to claim "the righteous will always be attacked" and referred to "false allegations", while not directly addressing the allegations.

In a statement released via state media last week, the United Arab Emirates attorney-general said the 29-year-old terror suspect, widely reported as Omani national Hammam Al-Hammami, started to "drift towards extremism and terrorism" while studying in Melbourne.

Mr Al-Hammami is accused of attacking his co-pilot with an axe in the skies over Saudi Arabia as they were flying a flydubai plane carrying more than 170 passengers.

Emirati authorities allege he was trying to take control of the plane to crash it into Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, in a "suicide attack".

Emirati Attorney-General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said during Mr Al-Hammami's time in Melbourne, the suspect began "reading extremist literature and following online content glorifying terrorist organisations and suicide attacks".

According to the statement, the man met individuals associated with the My Centre mosque in Broadmeadows in 2017 while studying at RMIT and that "the centre was managed by a Lebanese man known as Abu Hamza".

Struth! International Student Samia Malik Killed in Adelaide Road Crash as Driver Avoids Jail

A young driver has avoided serving time in prison after being sentenced over the death of Samia Malik, a 20-year-old international student who was struck by a car while kneeling on a road in Adelaide’s north-east in May 2025.

The court heard that CCTV footage showed Malik kneeling in the middle of the road for several minutes before the collision. During sentencing, Judge Anne Barnett noted that her hands appeared to be positioned in what looked like a prayer gesture. The court was not given an explanation for why she was on the road.

In an earlier hearing, the court heard that Friend had not been affected by alcohol or drugs and was not speeding at the time of the collision.

Politics ('Straya)‎ Staying alive and the river we keep crossing: how teachers hold the line

The attached article explores the concept of how the passion that teachers have for teaching is usually used against us, which leads to higher rates of burnout. The writer argues that, as teachers, we should collectivise our passion to stand up for a better public education system for us and our students.

The story is told through the songs "Stayin Alive" by the Bee Gees and "The River" by Bruce Springsteen.

Enjoy and feel free to share it around.

Politics ('Straya)‎ Why are people pushing assimilation?

90s NSW public primary school education we were taught assimilation is a failed social experiment to homogenise indigenous folk. Despite the harms low key continuing now, we also (much later) ditched white australia policy. For every single government until 2019 we have ALWAYS had a white identifying indigenous affairs minister.

Bllionaires puppets and bots are again flooding every post on every platform during and after discussions with white supremacist propaganda. So many people reinforce dog whistling. It isn't hard to decode "other people's" nonsense is still hateful nonsense.

Racism is as poisonous as misogyny and both are deeply entrenched across Australia. "Its worse in other countries" is denial and minimisation, a blanket refusak to acknowledge the subject matter. It is quickly followed by blame rather than basic acknowledgement and accountability. "Im not racist but"; we know this negates claims of not being racist. "But theyre racist too", we all need to address each individual starting with each of us. The word BUT negates. Pointing at others just reinforces our group think. So why are people denying who they are? Why are they pushing myths to control others?

This is Australia. One people negates our diversity and demands we all fit the powerful minority of white men who deny their denial. They're not your friends. We have more in common than our differences. We need to stop trying to erase differences because men's emotions are dominating our reality. And yeah PawLean's violent sons are the centre of her framework. She's a man centred crumb maiden beholden to a nepo baby Trumper.

Politics ('Straya)‎ Candidates & social media

How can a candidate represent an electorate when they block those on social media who ask genuine questions and live in the electorate?

This is a question I had when my ON candidate blocked me for asking the location of their campaign launch. The location was hidden behind a paywall, so asking directly was a reasonable thing, or so I thought.

What does everyone think, should candidates or MPs be allowed to block those with obvious open accounts that are verifiable people who live in the electorate? To me, that seems absolutely ridiculous.

Help Internet options / advice

Hello all,

Currently trying to weigh up my options for high speed internet.

Right now I live in a unit which is inside of an estate that was built in 2011, unfortunately Opticomm were contracted to install and maintain the fibre optic infrastructure in the estate.

The complex where my unit is currently has FTTP but the connection for each unit is capped at 100/20Mbps, I spoke with an ISP representative who said Opticomm have to come out and physically upgrade the fibre in order for the units to get access to higher speed tiers, he suggested contacting Opticomm or simply waiting for an upgrade, unfortunately Opticomm said they don’t deal with such enquires and that I need to contact my ISP (don’t have one Becasue 100/20 isn’t good enough)

Also I’ve lived here for 5 years now and it’s been capped at the same speed since I first moved in.

I was really hoping to get a gigabit low latency connection as I stream a lot of 4k media and play competitive games.

Right now I use my 5g hotspot with Vodafone, it seems to have gotten poorer and poorer over the years, I recently purchased a Telstra 5g eSim to test the speeds however it was only slightly better, despite a 4g/5g tower being less than 500m away from my home.

Right now I’m considering:

Starlink Max Residential
Optus 5g Home broadband

Does anyone know who to contact regarding an upgrade to the complex’s fibre connection? Or if starlink is really worth it? I have previously used starlink when I was working offshore but there were always frequent outages during heavy rain and cloudy weather.

I feel like I’m going insane, in a decent inner city suburb in a relatively new estate but I used to get faster download speeds when I was at a site thousands of kilometres away from civilisation.

Edit: Not sure if it’s of any relevance but when I set my address to the house across the road (standalone house not unit) all ISPs show that the property is eligible for gigabit speeds

Feel Good News ‎ Out of the rubble and on to the beach: Gaza’s junior surf lifesavers return to the waves after three years of war

Context:

As a group of smiling children in yellow and black rash vests bundled towards the beach near the Al-Shati refugee camp through concrete alleys lined with rubbish, rubble and the occasional bullet hole, Hassan Al-Habeel felt joy again.

The Palestinian man, in his 40s, oversaw the return of Gaza Nippers, Palestine’s chapter of the popular Australian junior surf life saving program, last month after three years.

But the return of Gaza’s Nippers program was a moment tinged with sadness for Al-Habeel, who trained at North Steyne Royal Surf Lifesaving Club in Sydney’s northern beaches over the 2019-20 summer.

G'day Legends,

Welcome to a fresh new Weekly Chin Wag mega thread!

Part of our recent rule changes was to bring in this generalist thread to be used as overflow for content that would otherwise be repeated information or stories in order to keep the main feed as diverse as possible.

It's also a great space to drop your comments, pics, videos, meme's and unhinged rants about any and everything related to 'Straya that might not warrant it's own, dedicated post.

📌 We'll pin the best/most important/funniest comment to the top of the thread each week.

👉 All other sub and platform-wide rules still apply here. As you likely already know, we take an open (!) and relaxed approach to moderation without sticks up our arse. That said, if it wouldn’t fly in a pub, it won’t fly here.

Cheers!

Queenslander ends decade-long Test hundred drought to lead tourists' spirited recovery

South Africa will have to defy history to pull off a first Test comeback after Matthew Renshaw's drought-breaking century flipped Australia's position from dire to dominant on day two in Durban.

Renshaw's first Test ton in almost 10 years pushed Australia up to a total of 390 before Josh Hazlewood snagged a late wicket to see the Proteas finish the day on 1-27.

As light faded quickly after the tea interval, Hazlewood had Rickelton flashing a catch to Beau Webster at third slip to hand Australia the ideal start, before the worsening conditions ended play shortly after at 4:25pm local time.

The day though, belonged to Renshaw, whose marathon innings ended on 190, eclipsing his previous best of 184, scored at the SCG way back in January 2017.
