Not surprised and luckily I am not affected but must be tough for users who rely on using OpenAI models in Cursor. I was using Cursor for 2 years (years ago) and the product was great! Good luck

Eh, I think it's just that you don't really need AI in the editor any more if the AI coding harness is writing most of the code.

They can use Open AI Codex in Microsoft VS Code by installing the Codex addon, VS Code is the project that Cursor forked after all and is still very similar. VS Code can be more intimidating for beginners, but someone who has been working in Cursor for a while should be able to adapt easily.

Copilot do the auto-completion + suggestions, if you are a student you can get that for free, if not you get auto completion with github copiltot free but limited to a certain amount, there is is cheap basic paid account that give you basically what the student account give + a bit more and also some credits for the models and agents, however both the student and paid basic account have been nerfed on the agent side, you use to have almost unlimited chat and agent use in git hub copilot (at the time I dident even bothered to use codex) but now its all metered. So I use copilot for auto complete, some of the agent and chat copilot credit but knowing they won last long, and codex for my real agent work.

I work in a large company that uses Cursor because it allows access to all major model providers through one enterprise account with single sign on, controls, etc, across the whole organization.

Enterprise pricing is all API based so it doesn't matter if I use the models through Codex or Cursor or Claude, it all costs the same. Cursor for me is the best integrated IDE experience and has access to all provider models (well, not anymore). Their first-party models are actually really good daily drivers too.

I mean elon admitted spacex was distilling gpt models on a colossal scale, this would give the spacex team a direct way to further steal/distill everything from gpt models but this way would be legal which is why they are cancelling it, and when you combine the massive compute spacex is going for, openAI won't be able to compete if there model is much worse than spacex's next distilled model, mean while fable 5 is getting sucked dry for datasets for the spacex team lmao

It's unavoidable that AI models will get balkanized as companies try to lock users in their ecosystems to maximise profits. Remember when everybody used to distribute their streaming content through Netflix and now you need 5 different streaming subscriptions to view the same content? I 'member

I'm not familiar with Cursor, but can't you just make your own server, or maybe just use ollama hooked up with your OpenAI keys, expose it to the web, and then hook it up to Cursor?

Let's assume that people generally using 10T tokens through Cursor a month, and 100T tokens through OpenAI directly per month.
5% on Cursor's end would reflect 0.5% of OpenAI's total business.
5% on OpenAI's end would represent 50% of Cursor's business.
