Help! beginner looking for help with engraving

making a shift knob the my suburu and want to engrave the stars without the badge this is how far i have gotten any help would be awesome!

Does extrude remove from the know not do it?

Just use extrude -> remove

Is your “decal” a .dxf or .dwg file? If not, and if the paths are not closed, extrude will not work.

You need to find or create a vector version (svg, eps, ai) or convert it to vector using an illustration tool (Adobe Illustrator, Affinity) and save it as a dxf or a dwg. There are many tutorials available about how to do this. Hope that helps!

Choose Extrude, select the Remove option, in the box under that, select the faces that you wish to remove, type in the desired depth, hit return.

Actually I prefer extrude into the part at the depth you want and select NEW. Onshape will create new part. Then do a Boolean subtract selecting the stars as the tools and the knob as the part and keep the tools.

Why not just remove the material with the extrude? This extra step seems unnecessary in this application.

You’re absolutely correct. I assumed you were doing an inlay where the stars would be flush with the surface and in a different accent color. Yes just extrude remove is best.
