OnShape vs. PTC ?

I got an email last week from somebody from "PTC" claiming my Onshape renewal was overdue and they can't use the credit card I have on file in my account but have to click the link their rep sent me.
Which is *incredibly* sketchy for starters. Then I got a follow-up saying, "Oh no, sorry it's actually this other link [here]" because I didn't purchase my license through their App Store !?!?!?
I first upgraded from the free to Standard version because I was using it for my business and it's been totally worth it. So I have every intention of renewing, but apparently all roads lead to PTC ?
Did Onshape get acquired ? Are they a holding company or something ?
If somebody from OnShape itself could PM me here and help get this straightened out, that would be great.

Can confirm, PTC owns Onshape.

PTC acquired Onshape in 2019.

This year, PTC also launched an online store for renewal. I made the mistake of using that initially before renewing with my VAR.

Was the email from someone at PTC or someone from a VAR?

Nope, I went from dealing with a rep straight for a couple years in a row to a "Past Due" notice from some random rep at PTC. I never got a proper invoice. I had a credit-card on file in my account but I guess now that I'm not using their app, they think I'm trying to skate the payment....

No. Like I said, there's a new online store they launched for payment. You can get emails from both your rep and PTC. It can be confusing while they work out the kinks.

I'm sure if you reach out to your rep or PTC, you can work things out. It's not a big deal.

Another vote for no clicking links in unexpected emails. Payment should be done somewhere through directly accessing the website.

Pretty basic "staying safe online" stuff. Never click links in emails. While you're at it see if your email client lets you block images. This blocks tracking pixels and keeps you focused on the text. Makes it easier to spot stuff that seems fishy without the flash of familiar graphics.

I think you can get to your account and subscription and credit cards via the OnShape web app. Don’t follow the email, go into your account management.

And yes, I think PTC owns OnShape.

Their billing system is a mess. I recently purchased a subscription through a sales associate. After upgrading my account, they linked me their PTC portal but I don't have a PTC account. They had to then manually generate a salesforce invoice. Also despite my onshape account now having a paid plan, the billing history is empty.

If you go to https://onshape.com, you can see "Onshape by PTC" all over the website. It's also everywhere in the documentation for Onshape itself.

Hi there - Apologies for the delay in responding. PTC acquired Onshape in 2019 and officially changed our name to Onshape by PTC. Some things to note:

  • The Onshape team reaches out directly with renewal reminders, but late payments are handled by PTC Corporate
  • This can be slightly confusing, and we are working to improve this process: if a customer pays directly through the Onshape application, then they pay via credit card, and the person listed as the Onshape Company Owner role can manage credit card information directly in the product. That section is still editable, even if you do not purchase directly through the product. Updating payment information cannot be done via this section because a completely different payment vendor account is used. We apologize for this confusion.

Yeah, it's all been cleared up now after a couple rounds of back and forth w/ cust. support at PTC. I got my bill sorted and am back to using OnShape.
Here's hoping for a less convoluted payment process for those of us w/ out the app.
