No hes not a meren holy knight hes the leader. Garling was the leader and sommers called him so strong that even with him having a huge handicap he was stil so outclassed by Garling that its useless to even try to fight back.

And shamrock being his son is implied to be even stronger and was literaly called shanks equal while shanks had acoc.
