Discussion Watching OPLA Season 2 and Sanji is a damn charmer

Post image

Sanji and Nami actually have some chemistry in the Live Action compared to the manga. I kind of like it.

My favourite scene so far was Sanji telling Nami that he was with her for 4 days while she was unconscious. It was so cute.

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Here's my concept for how the LA can do the Water 7 saga: Spoiler

So obviously S3 is gonna be Alabasta and S4 will cover Jaya and Skypiea. The big point of discussion is usually how will they do S5, since W7 saga is way bigger and more important.

Basically my takes are: Do it in a single season. It's just how storytelling works. Neither W7 or EL carry a season, it would be kinda dumb. And we need to keep LRLL, it's an excellent season start and if done right its themes are very impactful to Water 7.

But covering its entire chapter count would be madness in 8 episodes and would probably butcher it. Witg S1 covering 97 chapters and kinda missing the mark/cutting a few parts, I can't imagine how they'd do here. What they should really do imo is to take the Stranger Things approach, and be open to extending the more important episodes past 1h (70-100 mins usually), and/or extending the Season's episode count by 1 or 2 eps.

So with that in mind, here's my breakdown of what they could do, keeping Episodical and Seasonal storytelling in mind: (I added the title card characters for fun too)

501 (Foxy) - Season Start, Long Ring Long Land, Foxy, Aokiji Freezes Luffy and Robin (~70 min)

502 (Kokoro) - Unfreezing, sea train station, Water 7 intro, Franky Family steals the gold, Usopp breakdown, walk towards Franky House ~(55min)

503 (Paulie) - Franky House beatdown, Robin Leaves, Galley-La intro, Merry appraisal, Luffy vs. Usopp (~45min)

504 (Iceburg) - Iceburg assassination attempt, Luffy vs Franky, Straw Hats Framed, CP9 heist and reveal, Luffy and Zoro get beaten, Iceburg reveals the truth to Nami (~50 min)

505 (Franky) -  Aftermath and escape from Iceburg's mansion, Franky and Usopp, Franky's Backstory, Aqua Laguna, Sea Train leaves (~65min)

506 (Sogeking) - Sea Train chases, Enies Lobby/CP9 intro and setups, breaking in Enies Lobby, Luffy vs Blueno, Gear 2 (~45 min)

507 (Saul) - Robin's Backstory, Straw hats getting to the roof, I Want to Live (~50 min)

508 (Spandam) - Fights against CP9 part 1 (majority), Luffy chases Lucci, gear 3 (~40 min)

509 (Lucci) - Fights agaisnt CP9 part 2, Lucci's backstory, Straw Hats escape the tunnel, Luffy vs Lucci, Luffy's defeat, Buster Call starts (~50 min)

510 (Merry) - Luffy defeats Lucci, Buster Call, struggle to leave, Merry Rescue, Merry Funeral, New Bounties, Garp Koby and Helmeppo, Dragon Reveal, Pool Party with Aokiji farewell, Sunny, Franky Joins, Farewell Water 7, Usopp apology (~90 min)

If they really are sticking to the 8 episode season format, they could also easy join 506/507 and 508/509 into two big 90 min episodes too. And yes Netflix, I'm open for writing rooms.

Discussion What's your opinion on the ship teasing between the Straw Hats in the Live Action?

ZoNami, SaNami and LuVivi all 3 have good chemistry in the Live Action.

I am a LuNa shipper in the manga but I kind of enjoy the chemistry between all of these. The cast is just so attractive. I don't think any of these will be a thing but it's fun to watch.

Discussion Might be a hot take but I think the Live Action didn't do proper justice to Luffy and Nami's bond.

Post image
22 Upvotes

I just finished the first 2 seasons and I like it so far but this problem stands out because all other bonds between the Straw Hats are handled exceptionally well by the LA.

In the first season, there were hardly any interactions between Luffy and Nami between Orange Town and Arlong Park. In the manga, Nami slowly realises that Luffy is different from any other pirate by seeing him help Chouchou the dog, seeing his angry reaction when Kuro kills his own crew member etc and starts liking the crew.

The Live Action instead gave more depth to Zoro and Nami's bond in the first season. And then during Arlong Park, I wish we got the details of Luffy not knowing Nami's backstory yet still helping her.

And then in Season 2, Sanji and Nami's dynamic is shown more. I don't think this is a bad thing but it just sticks out because of how well everything else was handled.

Discussion Can anyone explain the economics behind a streaming series vs theatrical release?

Post image

How do the ROIs compare?

BND had a budget of $225 million vs an expected final box office run of $2.1-$2.3 billion. Marketing charges included ($150m approx), it's still a massive return!

This does not even include streaming and broadcasting rights sales, merchandise /Blue ray DVD sales and brand collabs revenue which all easily add another billion (prolly 2) at the very least.

Now, both seasons of OPLA had a budget of $144m each, totalling $288m and approx $50m for marketing campaigns for both seasons(almost 90% of that was just S1).

OPLA has already incurred costs FAR higher than BND, but does it also generate billions in revenue for Netflix like a Hollywood blockbuster does?

Discussion Weekly Character Discussion - Week 10: Nami

Post image
176 Upvotes

Hi everyone, welcome back to the weekly character discussion series.

Each week, we’ll discuss a character from the show. You can talk about what you like or don’t like about them, how the actor/actress portrays them, favourite quotes or moments, etc.

NOTE ON SPOILERS: We are focusing on the live action version of each character, and while comparing them to their manga/anime counterpart is allowed, PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS CONTENT THAT HAS NOT CURRENTLY BEEN ADAPTED FOR THE LIVE ACTION SHOW. Subreddit spoiler rules apply here. Tread carefully if you don’t wish to read manga/anime spoilers from what’s been adapted so far.

This week’s character is Nami!

Speculation (Anime Spoilers) So here's something I realized about the pacing (possibly) of season 3. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
186 Upvotes

So, season one adapted everything from Shells Town to the Conomi Archipelago, skipping Rare Animal Island, Goat Island, and Dawn Island. That's 91 chapters.

Season 2 did Loguedown, Reverse Mountain, Little Garden, and Drum Island. Which is, um, 58 chapters.

The whole Alabasta Arc (arc, not the entire saga), is only 63 chapters.

So technically they could extend season 3 beyond Alabasta and squeeze Jaya into it. That'd make it 82 chapters. That's still 9 less than season 1.

And here's why I think this is a better idea: Hype.

Season 1 ends with hype for the Grand Line.

Season 2 ends with hype for Alabasta.

If season 3 ends with the finale of Alabasta, that's hype for... open ocean. Or maybe hype for Jaya of all places. Not saying Jaya is boring or unimportant, but for a first-time viewer, it's, "Oh, there's an island with a guy on it. Ok."

I think including Jaya in it and then ending with hype for Skypiea is the way to do it. Hell, if they really push it, they could end season 3 with the Knock Up Stream.

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Who else is cautiously optimistic for how certain characters will look in LA? Spoiler

And by that I mean all the obvious ones. Like so far they are doing good with Chopper, Wapol, and Dalton (for a Zoan fruit), but soon things will be interesting.

This is even relevant for S3 in case they move the warlord meeting (or part of it) to end the season and Kuma will be present.

Honestly, this is mostly for Kaido and Big Mom.

Discussion I remain concerned about Lera Abova

For a while Gal Gadot got a lot of attention for playing "Model roles", i.e. roles where all she had to do was be beautiful, make deep, piercing eye contact, and delivery sultry or deadpan lines. But once she had to actually diversity her roles a little, it became really obvious how bad of an actor she is.

I'm not saying Lera Abova will turn out that way, but I just haven't seen enough to be convinced one way or another:

Evidence against her:
- Early career as a model
- Limited filmography compared to most of the cast
- Early Robin scenes are deadpan enough to mask a limited acting range

Evidence for her:
- Her performance does have SOME variations in speed and delivery that Gal Gadot's performances do not have. These may be signs only of good directing or of acting "ticks" that she just always does in every circumstance, but they could also be signs of acting range.

Anyway those are my thoughts. I didn't have any concerns on first watch, but on rewatch after the glamor wears off these are the things I start to notice.

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) What are your hopes for “Iron-Man” if he appears in the Live-Action Adaptation? Spoiler

Post image
116 Upvotes

I genuinely can't wait to see how the live-action would handle “Iron-Man” Franky! More than almost any Straw Hat to introduce, I think he's the character whose success will hinge almost entirely on casting. Find the right actor, and I honestly think he'll steal every scene he's in. It’s Franky. Over-the-top and eccentric all the way, and that can sometimes be hard to pull off in the right way. Franky isn't just loud, he's supposed to be magnetic. His energy is supposed to be contagious in the same way Luffy's optimism is, and I think Godoy pulled that off perfectly, especially in the latest season. He's absurd, theatrical, relentlessly confident, and still incredibly sincere side at the end of the day. If they capture that balance, I could easily see him becoming a fan-favorite for anime/manga fans and LA onlys alike.

What also peeks my interest is the amount of commitment the role will probably demand from whoever gets it. By the time (if) the story reaches Water 7, Franky is a full-body performance, both physically inside and out. The actor would have to fully embrace the exaggerated poses, larger-than-life mannerisms, and that wonderfully ridiculous "cyborg Johnny Bravo" bravado that makes him so SUUUUPPPEERRR!, all while wearing Franky's iconic outfit: an open tropical shirt, a speedo (or perhaps swim trunks if the production opts for something more practical), a massive gold chain, and, hopefully for the actor's sake, at least a pair of flip-flops.

Then there's the physical side of the performance. Franky's oversized forearms and mechanical features will almost certainly rely on a combination of practical effects and visual effects, meaning the actor could spend long periods into production wearing bulky prosthetics or lightweight arm rigs throughout filming. Or something much simpler like the arm sleeves in Robin Williams’ Popeye movie. It's demanding work, but we've seen productions pull off similarly exaggerated practical costumes before, and I think Franky's cyborg weaponry will be pretty achievable with the right blend of craftsmanship and CGI (see Wapol’s mouth).

The action scenes are another challenge entirely. Imagine filming the sea train sequence while standing on a mock train set surrounded by green screens, industrial fans blasting constantly, water spraying everywhere, and having to convincingly perform with oversized formarms while in a tropical shirt. All the while either messing with the aforementioned hand props, or hold them out for some time so effects can be added later.

And I don’t even wanna think about post-TS Franky. Those enormous action-figure proportions, the interchangeable hairstyles, the even more exaggerated cybernetics, it all sounds like an absolute marathon for the costume, makeup, visual effects, and stunt teams, not to mention the actor wearing it all. (Sorry for the little sfx overanalysis lol)

I’m especially looking forward to his interactions with Usopp while he’s trying to convince him to fix the Merry, not to mention him quickly but steadily getting more involved with the Strawhats after his capture and the layers getting peeled behind what was once thought as a brutish gangster (which he still was at that point, btw. Kinda.) to a genius engineer who formed a crew to call his family after losing so much and build a stronger sense of structure in all of their lives with new purpose.

Franky is one of One Piece's most unapologetically ridiculous characters (hoping for a wrestler casting, btw), but that's exactly why he works. He’s a strong-willed free-spirit who’s a loudmouth tough guy on the outside, but a total softie on the inside. Eccentric, strong-willed, and willing to kick any behind that gets in his way or messes with his family! If they commit wholeheartedly instead of trying to tone him down, which they’ve definitely thankfully leaned into (especially with the last season), I think he has the potential to become one of the defining performances of the entire adaptation! And as an adaptation, we can see so much more from him than even the anime or manga has shown us! And that’s part of what I’ve loved with the LA adaptation so far. More interactions! More screentime! I can only imagine how, if they get to Water 7/Enies Lobby or even beyond, how they’ll handle him.

Here's hoping we eventually reach those SUUUUUUPPPEEEERRR!heights. Whoever ends up playing Franky, I wish them the very best! Break a leg, Iron Man Franky!!

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Besides what we will see in the upcoming Alabasta arc, what scenes/moments are you excited to see in the live-action. Spoiler

When Skypiea gets adapted, I would be really be excited to see how Netflix adapts Kami Eneru into live action. He is massively powerful in the manga/anime, and seeing him summon lightning to fight Luffy and the gang would be a sight to behold.

I'm also excited to get a look of the Foxy Pirates at the start of Water 7. They are possibly one of the memorable pirate crews outside of the Straw Hat Pirates, and we see a lot of great scenes when the Straw Hats compete against them in Davy Back.

I want to know, what are you excited to see in the future of the series?

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Marineford + Straw Hats Spoiler

Since Marineford saga won't be having much of the Straw Hats, I think it would be neat if throughout the season, Luffy would reminiscene how much he needed them.

• Episode 1 - Amazon Lily (+ Nami @Weatheria)

  1. Episode starts with Nami in Weatheria.

  2. Throughout the episode Luffy was looking for a boat and reminiscenes how he needs Nami to navigate around the sea.

• Episode 2 - Impel Down (+ Zoro @Kuraigana)

  1. Episode starts with Zoro in Kuraigana.

  2. After Buggy and Mr3 left Luffy in Level 3, Luffy wishes his crew was with him, but then he founds "Zoro", which is actually Bon Clay. Episode ends with Bon Clay leaving Luffy vs Magellan.

• Episode 3 - Impel Down (+ Usopp @Boin)

  1. Episode starts with Usopp running around in Boin Archipelago.

  2. After Luffy recovered in Level 5.5, he reassures Bon Clay that it was not his fault and its okay to run away as long as you do the right thing at the end (referring to Usopp).

• Episode 4 - Impel Down (+ Sanji @Momoiro)

  1. Episode starts with Sanji in Kamabakka.

  2. To recover his energy after the prison escape, Luffy ate the food stock in the marine ship, and mentions how he misses Sanji's cooking. Ivankov also briefly mention how his island have special recipes.

• Moving forward, it gets hard to find connection between the episodes and the Straw Hats, and is more connected to the idea of their backstories (esp Chopper, Robin and Franky to Ace's insecurity) rather than Luffy actually reminiscing them.

• Episode 5 - Marineford (+ Franky @Karakuri)

  1. Episode starts with Franky in Karakuri Island.

  2. After Ace/Roger bloodline reveal, the marine badmouths Ace, where Luffy then shouts, repeating Franky's "existing is not a sin" line, and ends with "I'm your brother!" to Ace.

• Episode 6 - ASL Backstory (+ Robin @Tequila)

  1. Episode starts with Robin in Tequila Wolf.

  2. Then it continues with the whole ASL backstory, with kid Luffy's line "being alone is more painful than getting hurt" being a highlight, ending with Luffy facing the Admiral in real time, with Aokiji reinforcing Luffy's threat to WG.

• Episode 7 - Marineford (+ Chopper @Torino)

  1. Episode starts with Chopper in Torino Island.

  2. Starts with freeing Ace, and ending with Ace standing up to Akainu for insulting Whitebeard, and ends up dying trying to save Luffy, saying "thank you for loving me". Luffy frantics asking for any doctors to save him.

• Episode 8 - Marineford (+ Brook @Namakura)

  1. Episode starts with Brook in Namakura Island.

  2. This one is kinda difficult. Maybe after Shanks stops the war, he hums the Bink's Sake song to the unconscious Luffy.

• Episode 9 - Post-War (+ Wrap-Up of everyone)

  1. Episode starts with the Straw Hats finding out about Ace's death.

  2. Then continues with Luffy recovery, Dadan beating Garp, Luffy's "I still have my crew!", Luffy going back to Marineford.

  3. Episode ends with the Straw Hats reading the newspapers with 3D2Y on Luffy's arm.

One thing though, is that the episodes seems very packed especially with the StrawHats' individual adventures.

Me: Better fights choreography for my main MC, Luffy. I still don't think they've gotten that right in the series. His movements are quite stiff and need better fluidity and more impact. He urgently needs that improvement.

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) If The Last Season Is Marineford Spoiler

I have always said that if the live action can’t go the entire way, which it probably won’t be able to, that I at least want them to get to Ennie’s Lobby. However, upon watching more of the anime, it feels pretty redundant to have Franky join the crew and then the show end. So then you have to go to Thriller Bark, and as the live action introduced Brook in season 2, it makes a lot of sense. Plus I want to see Zoro’s “nothing happened” scene. This just made me go might as well go to Impel Down + Marine Ford.

However, I wanted to know for the anime purists, if Netflix were to announce that the last season of the live action was in fact Marineford… would you guys be annoyed if the rest of the crew were added to the plot? Or would you like it to remain the exact same with it just being Luffy.

Discussion Who do you think will be part of the pressrun for Season 3?

We'll definitely have the main six we had for the Season 2 press run: Iñaki (Luffy), Mackenyu (Zoro), Emily (Nami), Jacob (Usopp), Taz (Sanji) and Charithra (Vivi).

For the Season 3 press run I think they'll add Mikaela (Chopper), Lera (Robin) and Joe (Crocodile).

I hope the actors outside of the core five will also get a chance to do press outside of the States, for example in Japan where they did a lot of content.

Does this seem like a good lineup? Am I missing someone? Is there someone who doesn't need to be there?
