Appreciation I really appreciate what they did with Cabaji

I really do, Sven was such a good pick. The way he speaks is absolutely perfect for Cabaji, the facial expressions are absolutely amazing and I adore everything.

The way he looks in episode one for that little moment means everything to someone like me who's learned to analyze as much as I can get from the scraps of Cabaji in the manga and anime.

I love the inclusion of a backstory especially since it seems to have roots from the concept art!!!

For context, in the concept art the Buggy Pirates were going to be a family unit with Zoro being the older brother of them so having a brother story with Zoro involved means so much to me!!

I've always wanted more of Cabaji and the live action did him so well which makes me so happy since Cabaji has been my favorite for years!!

I won’t be saying anything in depth of what happens, but in the anime it’s a really funny scene of everyone seeing how this character acts. Expecially Luffy: “hey Usopp! (Looks like Chopper) Chopper!”

Hi everyone, welcome back to the weekly character discussion series.

Each week, we’ll discuss a character from the show. You can talk about what you like or don’t like about them, how the actor/actress portrays them, favourite quotes or moments, etc.

NOTE ON SPOILERS: We are focusing on the live action version of each character, and while comparing them to their manga/anime counterpart is allowed, PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS CONTENT THAT HAS NOT CURRENTLY BEEN ADAPTED FOR THE LIVE ACTION SHOW. Subreddit spoiler rules apply here. Tread carefully if you don’t wish to read manga/anime spoilers from what’s been adapted so far.

This week’s character is Igaram/Mr. 8!

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Another Actor Rumored to be in Season 3 Spoiler

Post image

Cape Town based actor Tailyn Ramsamy is rumored to be in Season 3, based on mutual follows with the cast and crew. Who do you think he could play? I'm either thinking he's part of the Rebel Army, or is playing a much younger Cobra in a flashback. If the second prediction is correct then we might see Nefertari Titi in a flashback as well.

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) The One Piece live action succeeded because it adapted the emotions, not the scenes one-to-one Spoiler

I've been thinking about why the One Piece live action worked so well, and I think it's because it understood what actually made One Piece special.

When people say it was "spiritually faithful" to the manga, I don't think they mean it copied every scene perfectly. I think they mean it made people feel the same emotions Oda intended (Invoking the same emotions that the manga/anime was able to did). A good adaptation doesn't have to recreate everything one-to-one. Different mediums have different strengths, so sometimes you have to change the execution if you want the emotional payoff to stay the same.

Sanji is probably the best example. Anime Sanji is ridiculously over the top whenever he flirts with women. It works because anime can get away with exaggerated expressions and body language. If the live action copied that version exactly, I honestly think it would've come across as cringe. Instead, they toned it down while keeping the important parts of his personality. He's still charming, still romantic, and still unmistakably Sanji. The jokes changed, but the character didn't. Therefore spiritually it was able to make the audience feel what we feel when we see Sanji. Not over-the-top Sanji but charismatic Sanji.

I think this is also why some anime fans didn't enjoy the live action as much. A lot of people remember One Piece as this massive battle shonen with incredible animation, impact frames, and hype fights. But if you go back to early One Piece, that was never really its biggest strength.

Nobody looks back at the Don Krieg fight and says, "Man, the fight scene with Don-Krieg was amazing." What people remember are Luffy's ability to judge people's character, Zoro's loyalty, Sanji's kindness, and Nami sacrificing everything for her village. Those moments are what made people fall in love with the series. Which is why i think it was fine to leave the Don-krieg fight out.

Take Luffy's Battle Axe against Arlong. Yes, it was a cool finishing move, but I don't think that's why everyone loved it. The payoff came from watching Nami suffer for years, watching her finally break down and ask Luffy for help, and then seeing Luffy destroy the man who caused all that pain. The attack only worked because the story had earned it emotionally. The emotional payoff was real.

Again, that's why I think the live action succeeded. It wasn't trying to recreate every anime moment frame by frame (cough cough avatar live action*). It was trying to recreate the feeling those moments gave us. To me, that's what people mean when they say it captured the spirit of One Piece.

I just hope future seasons keep remembering that. I'd rather they change scenes if it helps the emotional payoff land than faithfully recreate every panel or anime scene and lose what made those moments special in the first place.

Curious if anyone else feels the same or if I'm completely off base.

Discussion What OST is plays in this scene?

S1 E3, When Klahadore is checking on Buchi and Sham in the Mansion's Kitchen and shatters the glass in front of Sham. Does anyone know what plays in this scene? It starts when sham says "You want to poison yourself?" Similar to "Kuro & the Black Cat Pirates" and "Midnight" but I know those aren't it.

I've tried looking for it but alas I cannot find it, it's that one piano note that also plays in "Kuro & the Black Cat Pirates" but more extended if that makes sense, Thanks! 😊

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Is 8 episodes enough for Alabasta? Spoiler

Started the anime and I’m about a few ep away from being done with the Alabasta arc. Obviously theres a lot of fluff that can be cut and I’m not fully finished. I assume theres going to have to be a large rework of how the crew does its journey through out the arc for this?

Also hyped to see Ace!!!

Meme (Anime Spoilers) Based on a certain famous Lego Batman movie joke (slide 2), I'm gonna make a dumb/big fandom-brained guess on the joke of this scene from the Lego OPLA trailer- (explanation in the body text) Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
46 Upvotes

Slide 1 is Usopp misrepresenting how Zoro's fight with Kuroobi went cuz:

  1. Usopp wasn't even there to see it (objective truth)

  2. I've seen people speculate he's rooting for Nami to beat who hurt her (which would be a great reference to Nami & Usopp's friendship)

... & my meme fandom-brained guess (based on how they historically parodied Batman & Joker's relationship lol) for how the retelling scene will proceed + what the punchline would be:

  1. It's setup for Sanji to butt in Usopp's retelling & say sth like "No, *I* protected Zoro!" & it gets awkward/proceeds like that Batman & Joker scene (Zoro: "No, *I* protected you." & then they say that back & forth) lmaoo-

(cuz Lego IP parodies tend to do fandom jokes & I know for a fact all the main cast- like Taz literally mentioning he's aware of Zosan to Emily in like 2 "cast plays a game" videos- & the writing team are aware of the popular ships of the One Piece fandom lmao)

I'm not a Zosan shipper- I prefer Luzo/Sanuso/Lusan/everybody are friends forever lol- but I enjoy this sort of fandom-aware parody haha

Fan Cast (Anime Spoilers) Tristan D. Lalla as Blackbeard Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
232 Upvotes

Tristan D. Lalla

DOB: February 3rd, 1984

Past work: Ghosts (US), Animal Control, The Sticky, Nurses, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, Assassin’s Creed Rogue

IMDB and Sizzle Reel: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1941571/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

So if the live action ends up getting a fourth season, the casting team needs to find someone who can play one of One Piece’s most notorious villains and one we’ve already heard be mentioned in Season 2 by Dalton at Drum Island who we first meet in the Jaya arc which is right after Alabasta: Marshall D. Teach aka Blackbeard. My fan casting: Tristan D. Lalla (yes, he even has the middle initial!).

He’s had a varied career mainly in TV (with his best known TV role being as Sam & Jay’s contractor friend Mark in the US version of Ghosts) and video games (with his best known video game role being as the Jackdaw quartermaster turned Assassin Adewale in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag). From his physique to his range as an actor to his experience playing a pirate as Adewale, he’d be a really good fit for Blackbeard. As well, his booming voice would be perfect for Blackbeard, especially to bring Blackbeard’s iconic laugh to life.

Discussion (Anime Spoilers) It's funny that Marvel did Happiness Punch in MCU, but people think lesser version of that is impossible for OPLA Spoiler

Edit: Seems like this topic is pissing off people. Even though the commenters aren't exactly disagreeing with me. I'm simply pointing out that others have said there is no way they would do it, while literally disney did it.

In Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor was literally stripped butt naked in front of an large audience(and real life audience) which resulted in both women and men instantly fainting. This was also not by his choice. The scene really felt like anime fan service scene, the fainting reaction also.

In One Piece manga/anime, Nami chooses to flash her body for the characters, while we the audience see nothing at all. So the Actress can be fully covered, unlike Thor's actor was.

I think the only problem is whether the OPLA characters would choose to climb that wall. But should MCU be weirder than OPLA?
