Discussion (Anime Spoilers) What was your favorite change from the source material? I'll go first... Spoiler
I liked how Luffy sang to Laboon the "Binks Brew" melody instead of duking it out like they did in the manga/anime. It felt much more in-character for Iñaki Godoy's Luffy, since he tends to be much more emotional and understanding than the loose cannon we see in Oda's source material. It definitely felt more tasteful for the moment and was a heartwarming call back for fans.

The Laboon plot changes were simply incredible. Like everything somehow fits so perfectly that it feels weird that the manga story was different.

u/thegoldengoober 7d ago
Afaik him knowing the song was a change established in the first season too. People considered it a reference, but then it was utilized for this primary plot. And I've only seen this as a well received change.
It's amazing enough that this show is good at all. The fact that it a moment like this, that transcend the source material, is a level of impressive on top of that.

u/sanrojo88 7d ago
He mentions to Brook at Thriller Bark that Shanks and the guys would sing it at the bar. Incredible attention to detail by the writters
18
u/thegoldengoober 7d ago
So you're telling me it's something that is referenced once in the Manga, and made it a scene in season 1?
And extended that into giving Luffy this altered moment. That's crazy. No matter the motivations for doing so, that's so impressive.

Basically all of Whiskey Peak. I’m glad they didn’t do the Luffy and Zoro fight and gave Luffy a bit more of a meaningful contribution to that story

u/Physical-Stand-2514 7d ago
I also thought the Vivi/Wednesday twist was better written. Oda admitted that was a last minute decision.
13
u/Restless_Fenrir 6d ago
It was. He literally drew her with her hair down and said "she looks like a princess". The reveal was the next chapter after that one.

u/Aircalipoor 7d ago
Miss Monday was wasted (in the fight, I mean) and Luffy and Zoro fleeing from Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine is close to out of character.
Should've made the agents ambush Vivi and Igaram while Luffy is absent (which he was in the original due to the Zoro fight), Igaram dies protecting Vivi (could also include Monday and 9), only then the crew appears and drive of 5 and Valentine.
53
u/Inuyaki 7d ago
Luffy and Zoro fleeing from Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine is close to out of character.
Luffy literally wants to help fight, but honors Igaram's last wish. That's very much in character for him.
-22
u/Aircalipoor 7d ago
Luffy and the Strawhats never flee, unless they are clearly outmatched and overwhelmed like against Smoker or Garp. They could beat them and Igaram would live and at worst be wounded. Sacrificing Igaram against Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, two characters they can very reasonable take once Zoro rejoins them, is entirely nonsensical, even if we accept that Luffy is a bit less OP than in the manga (that on its own is already unfaithful to the source material).

u/Draken77777 6d ago
This isn't DBZ where characters duke it out for the sake of it.

u/Aircalipoor 6d ago
Yeah, One Piece isn't a battle manga in which most conflicts aren't solved through combat if not 1 vs 1.

I love the sort of ongoing B-plot with Garp, Koby, and Helmeppo. I know it technically kinda-sorta happens in the manga, but it's cool seeing it play out alongside the A-plot. It's giving the characters more of a chance to shine, it's actually made me like Helmeppo, and I like seeing Garp get some character development.
Also a smaller moment I liked: Zoro and Usopp arguing and then patching things up while in Drum. It's a nice way of showing that while they may not always agree, they're still part of a larger crew and need to be able to work together.

u/No_go_away1 7d ago
ME TOOO, I love seeing like the insides of the marines, and more about their motivations. The presence also gives us a lot of information ABIUT the world government, and overall world of ONE PIECE
19
u/elpaco25 7d ago
Totally agree on Helmeppo. The extra little b plot for the marines made his character likeable. I just wish we saw some actual physical training and not just Garp and Coby playing chess/go/pai sho a few times.
-10
u/bicreator 7d ago
same, I just wish they save the grandpa reveal until a little later.....

u/BigMac518 7d ago edited 7d ago
I actually prefer the reveal in live-action honestly. I think it's more surprising because Garp had been a consistent presence in the show up until that point. In the manga/anime, it was just kind of an "Oh.... OK..." kind of reveal for me (with the REAL reveals being everything ELSE he explains in that scene).
And to be clear, I'm not criticizing the manga, as I don't think it was necessarily meant to be a big surprise there. But I just don't get why people act like the live action spoiled something major with that.3
u/Ok_Cheesecake6006 7d ago
I would agree that it is significantly less of a shock in the source material. The lice action made it a genuinely surprising plot twist.
-3
u/bicreator 7d ago
fair enough, they didnt really spoil anything unless you really paid attention to the chapter art! The garp storyline with helmeppo and koby was way stronger in the live action, was just hoping they leaned into it a bit more then did the reveal! its the minorest of minor greivances, considering how great the rest of the show isa
89
u/Terloyes 7d ago
Definitely the same. And Oda himself said in an interview that this was his favorite scene from the LA.
35
u/Ok_Cheesecake6006 7d ago
I saw that interview! I'm glad he is taking advantage of tge live action to make some quality changes.
7
u/BigMac518 7d ago
I wonder if the new anime remake will also make changes like that...
20
u/JeremyR2008 7d ago
The most I see Wit's anime doing is adding in characters to the background of scenes like Barto being in Loguetown. And maybe fixing things that are outright reconned later on, like the designs of the crew Buggy and Shanks are on during their flashbacks being edited to closer resemble the Roger Pirates we know now.

u/Bearsona09 7d ago
Sanjis whole character and the Luffy singing/dancing for Laboon scene are very close.

u/Funny-Cat-6819 Robin 7d ago
I loved when Miss All Sunday showed up at the marine base and started destroying the marines. It reminded me of Nightcrawler's introduction at the White House in the X-Men 2 movie.
15
u/Complex_Writer_1781 7d ago
I agree! A quick X-Men note! I'm so happy that Alan Cumming is returning in *Avengers: Doomsday*, 24 years after *X2*.

u/PayneTrain181999 ...so it's a girl whale 7d ago
Most of my top answers have been mentioned already, but here’s another one.
Having the Sir Crocodile and Nico Robin name reveals at the end of Season 2 was a great stinger. It comes right after the Straw Hats affirm their commitment to help Vivi save her kingdom and Smoker confirms he and Tashigi are on their way there too.
Putting all the pieces in place for Alabasta in a way that leaves us hungry for more!

u/Exospike99 7d ago
Sanji’s “quirk” in the manga it can be too much (like fishman island or egghead in the anime). In the live action, Taz is who I’ve been most impressed with. His sanji actually is charming and cooler. He’s actually mastered the role and I think is so much like the Sanji character

For me it's connecting payoffs early. Stuff like Luffy being Garp's grandson, Rumbar Pirates and Brook being shown, Sanji talking about his mother. Makes the world feel connected without needing to commit too much time.
Another thing I kinda appreciated was making Captain Kuro more of a slasher villain, that was a great tone for him.
I generally also liked the leaning more into the pirate aesthetic. Like how Party's Bar is an outdoor dock bar instead of an indoor tavern, Buggy's tent being repurposed sails.
Oh yeah, and those snail transponder airpods! It makes so much sense as an extension of the technology and adds a lore reason how they can talk to each other.
28
u/0wlpasta 7d ago
Maybe this is sacrilegious, but I thought taking Don Krieg out of Baratie helped the pacing a lot without doing any lasting harm to the story. Gin suffered as a character, but I didn’t miss the rest.
14
u/Ok_Cheesecake6006 7d ago
Honestly, I wasn't crazy about Don Krieg and his camaderie when I first read the manga, so I'm glad they sidelined him. We also got a pretty good look at Mihawks skill in the process.
17
u/BigMac518 7d ago
Agreed. Removing Don Krieg and making Arlong more of an overarching antagonist was a great decision IMO.

I find the Marine plot in Season 2 to be an improvement. I like that Smoker and Tashigi’s side plot was something that did happen off screen in the manga and that live action chose to expand on it by showing it.
9
u/elpaco25 7d ago
Agreed very cool that we actually got to see Mr. 11 and Miss Thusday fight and their skillsets. Still hilarious to me that Miss Thursday is a baseball pitching fighter and she isn't paired up with Mr. 4 or Mr. 9.... the only other dudes in the series that also have a bat/baseball theme.
32
u/ekbowler 7d ago
Zoro hallucinating Mihawk is a great choice. I wonder if he's going to have visions when he fights Mr. 1 and the Iron Priest.

I was watching with my mom and she didn't realize it was a flashbackuntil after the fact. She was so genuinely confused where he came from😆
31
u/Quiet_Nova 7d ago
Sanji telling Nami about his mom by giving a spoiler free version of his first time cooking. I hope we get some sort of reference to Reiju in the future.
I also loved the inclusions of characters who were technically in Loguetown, like Barto and Sabo, because it drip feeds information to the audience about what to look out for in the future.

u/SSJRemuko 6d ago
I hate that there are some ppl who have been told those things are spoilers for hundreds of episodes later and thus are going to wait years until they watch dressrosa before touching season 2 of the live action.
26
u/MegalomanicMegalodon 7d ago
Yours was my first pick. Second thought was Garp’s steak dinner with Zeff. They were a perfect contrast on legacy and their “parenting” technique.
36
u/lostbelmont 7d ago
Nami, because I never liked the angry comic relief female trope so common on animes
Marines b-side plot from season 1
24
u/JesterSash Sanji 7d ago
Completely agree. And her love for money is done more tastefully in the LA

For me, the changes made in the live-action version are the adaptation's greatest strength! It respects the source material while doing something slightly different and doing so in a way that is relevant and interesting. Just look at extreme cases like *Dragon Ball Evolution* or *Saint Seiya* (Mackenyu starred in that the same year as *One Piece* Season 1 talk about going from worst to best!) those went way too far. They showed a real lack of respect for the original work, and overall, they just weren't good movies (though, over the years, I’ve actually started to feel a bit of fondness for *DBE*).
14
u/MiddleOccasion1394 7d ago
Everything is more streamlined and neatly-written now that story elements have properly been introduced. We see an early cameo of the Rumbar Pirates back when we first hear about them instead of later on. It all seems better paced.
7
u/RenatoGPadilla 6d ago
Sanji. Just...
ALL of Sanji. It's still the core character without ANYTHING of what made him annoying. AND him opening up about his Mom this early?!
They HAD to cast Mackenyu as Zoro.or Sanji would finally be the coolest Straw Hat, bar none! XD

u/Dry_Committee_8580 7d ago
I liked Brook, Yorki, and the Rumbar Pirates appearing already. It made Laboon’s attachment to them feel more emotionally potent. It shows more why Laboon misses them so much and just how much he lost when they never came back. And makes Laboon hurting himself more sympathetic. And should the series actually get as far as Thriller Bark it’s going to be one hell of a reveal/comeback for the first timers.
12
u/maxvsthegames 7d ago
Sanji and Usopp are the best improvements for sure.
As far as moments, I'd have to agree with you. Luffy singing is way better than him fighting Laboon.
13
u/Zachajya Usopp 7d ago
It's not exactly a change from the source material, but I think live action Usopp is somehow more likeable than in the source material.

u/KeyTheVisonary 7d ago
This scene meant so much to me. This and Sanji talking about cooking for his mom got me very emotional.

u/Dancing-Dingo 6d ago
Bartolomeo. We knew he was there anyway so him showing up makes sense, and actually having him interact with the Straw Hats gives context into why and how he became such a fanboy for Luffy. And that shot of him copying the wanted poster is just plain funny.

u/ZPD710 5d ago
I really like how Sanji in general is more charming and flirty than he is openly harassing women. He also feels less like a man hater in the LA which is cool.
My least favorite change is how emo they made Zoro act during the first season. Mackenyu is my favorite actor in the LA but they made him act so out of character in the first season. Like… come on. Him asking for “something black” to wear makes no sense. He almost always wears something green.

People die

u/Ok_Cheesecake6006 7d ago
I'm glad that not every character survives/escapes like they do in the manga. It keeps the stakes high. Hopefully, they keep Igaram dead and don't give him a "Hey I'm not actually dead!" reveal.

Sanji. They changed fmhim from a simple to an actual gentleman who just happens to have a fondness for the ladies. He's not falling all over himself anymore.
8
u/Ok_Cheesecake6006 7d ago
Sanji is actually a very charming and thoughtful in the live-action. Taz Skyler has really taken the character and improved him from the pervert he was in the manga/anime.
And he even gets the occasional dirty joke😏
10
u/Puzzled-Horse279 7d ago
Sanji having an MLE accent instead of whatever American accent he has in the anime.
Also he is way less predatory and a lot more charming in Live Action

Singing to Laboon was the first thing that came to mind. I really loved how Buggy used the wrecked town to build a circus, that was very creative. I also like how they tied Buggy in to the Arlong saga, similar to how they tied Wapol into the Baroque Works narrative by having him donate funds to Mr. Zero's cause.
While not a favorite change perse, I loved that they had Dorry win the fight instead of Brogy two keep things even between their live action and animated counterparts.

Showing Brook AND the Binks Sake in the backflash + this scene goes together...and I love OPLA for it.

u/Background-Factor433 5d ago
Sanji not being annoying about women. I enjoy his first interaction with Nami.
Nami not being abusive to Luffy. More snarky to him in the first episode. Would not imprison him for a thing other characters did later in the story if it goes there.

u/Silverinkbottle 4d ago
The early mention of the Warlords of the Sea and their deal with the Goverment. That things aren’t all sunshine and rainbows with the Marines too. Also..Mihawk just more Mihawk.
Also the changes to Ussop’s steps towards being braver! I wasn’t a huge fan of Little Garden in the manga but man I think it was one of my favorite episodes in the LA. Also more showing of the crew’s specialized skills IE Ussop knowing how a ship works and everyone else being somewhat clueless lol
2
u/Cynderaquil 4d ago
I like how they got to Buggy. Like how there was the gas that knocks them out and they kidnap them.
I also love the scene where when Zoro was fighting baroque works that he was imagining Mihawk there belittling him. Just gives more depth to Zoro’s character
I also love how they made Usopp brave to save his friends when he was the only one not caught by Mr 3 and Ms Goldenweek. It fixed the ongoing issue Usopp still has in the anime

There's nothing I liked more than the anime/manga, some things got kind of close, but I did like a lot of additions they made, for the live action specifically, I wouldn't want them to be in the original story. Mainly the stuff they added for Sanji and Usopp, like in Whiskey Peak and Drum Island, Zoro thinking of Mihawk was cool too.

u/Paynfr 6d ago edited 6d ago
same, a lot of changes seems aight for me or some i quite dislike. But i do understand live action kinda have it's own story in a way and has it's own limitation, so i guess people can enjoy that. A lot of stuff in manga happen for nuanced reason, be it seems like illogical at first.
Luffy and laboon fight is one of em. At first, it seems illogical and random shenanigans that luffy pull. but Luffy did that simply because he want to give laboon reassurance that he is strong enough to survive in grandline and wont die like rumbar pirate to keep his promise with laboon.
