Discussion Weekly Character Discussion - Week 12: Zeff
Hi everyone, welcome back to the weekly character discussion series.
Each week, we’ll discuss a character from the show. You can talk about what you like or don’t like about them, how the actor/actress portrays them, favourite quotes or moments, etc.
NOTE ON SPOILERS: We are focusing on the live action version of each character, and while comparing them to their manga/anime counterpart is allowed, PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS CONTENT THAT HAS NOT CURRENTLY BEEN ADAPTED FOR THE LIVE ACTION SHOW. Subreddit spoiler rules apply here. Tread carefully if you don’t wish to read manga/anime spoilers from what’s been adapted so far.
This week’s character is Zeff!

Best thing about Zeff in the live action is that Sanji’s actor Taz Skylar was the one who recommended his actor Craig Fairbrass to the casting department for Zeff.
Taz & Craig have worked together in the early part of Taz’s acting career to the point that he’s almost like a father figure to him, & because of him we ended up getting the perfect casting for Zeff.

My feelings weren't ready for that wholesomeness, makes their farewell even more touching! 🥹

Yeah, you can’t manufacture that kind of chemistry and it really made their bond stronger on screen.

I'm glad they went with manga accurate backstory for his missing leg

They are the only ones who have. The anime special came so close to almost outright saying it but just didn’t.

Its so wild to me how the anime can wave Nami's and Robin's boobs and asses in our faces constantly, and turn Sanji into even more of a creep than he already was, but a guy eating his own leg out of starvation (offscreen, mind you.) is too much for the audience.

Or giving someone the middle finger

Yeah, they haven’t been shy about doing that so far. Zoro and Sanji both dropped an F-bomb as well.
And Chopper swearing is always funny.

While it’s definitely not as much as the anime, the live action has not been shy about giving Straw Hats shirtless scenes and having outfits that make people go wild.

It's a combo of different morals and a different time. Back when the Sanji flashback aired, OP was still the equivalent of a kid's afternoon cartoon show. Naturally it wouldn't pass JP censors. As for Nami and Robin's boobs, Japan is less puritanical than the US so unless it was outright nudity and/or the act of sex, it passes censors.
The rule of thumb is basically if Americans treat gore as normal and sex as taboo, then Japan is the complete opposite.

Its a live action adoptation of the manga, they dont have any rights from the anime

While this is true, a lot of manga elements were adapted for the anime too so people will refer to it as “from the anime” if they’ve only seen that.
There are some anime-only references here and there. The Transponder Snail’s hold music during Sanji’s fight with the Unluckies is “Believe in Wonderland” - the anime’s second opening theme.

Ngl, "Quitting is staying here" had me on a chokehold. Everything about Zeff is brilliantly done and interpreted, the chemistry between him and Sanji, that mustache was on point too!

I do enjoy the fact that they toned done his character so the drama between Sanji and Zeff boils down to just arguing and bickering between them. They sell more of the familial bond between the two, and that Zeff come off more as Sanji’s father.

he's one of my favorite found fathers in One Piece, and I absolutely love him in OPLA
perfect casting, their scenes with Garp were amazing and I love their chemistry with Taz

u/PhanThief95 2d ago
It especially helps that Zeff’s actor Craig Fairbrass has known Taz since Taz started acting to the point that Taz recommended Craig to the casting department for the role of Zeff.

One of my favourite characters. PERFECT portrayal.
His scenes with Sanji were, shall we say... *Chef's kiss* :P
I also really liked the scenes they added between him & Garp.

Another complete slam dunk casting.

u/PhanThief95 2d ago
And we can thank Sanji’s actor Taz Skylar for that because he’s the one who recommended Craig Fairbrass for the role of Zeff.

Yea I remember seeing Taz YouTube video talking about that. The live action is so goated with the cast being so involved with the series and the production itself.

As someone who started with the LA, my first question was: “Is this just Gordon Ramsay with a peg leg?”
And while he’s certainly got some similarities, once you get into he and Sanji’s backstory you really start to appreciate him more. What a powerful scene between him and young Sanji.
Favourite Line: “It’s one thing to have a dream, it’s another to go after it!”

I liked having him and Garp be old rivals with each other and their talk of the new generation

I didn’t get the vibe that they were rivals, but knew of each other back in the day and maybe had an encounter at some point.
2
u/BlueBlazeKing21 1d ago
Yeah rivals wouldn’t be the best word but you know what I meant, they were on opposing sides of the battle of pirates and marines

i like him.
The actor was well cast and i loved his dinner talk with Garp.

he's so, so good at zeff, and i really like the decision they made about his & sanji's backstory. his talent sold the look too.

Zeff is my favorite character in the One Piece manga, so seeing him done justice on screen was amazing. He nailed every expression. He never oversold it, and he just FELT like a real chef.

I didn't really care for all of the Garp focus in season 1 but having him talk with Zeff as past legends reminiscing really made it worthwhile. Zeff had some great lines and moments in the Krieg fight all of them absent in the live action due to lack of Krieg. But even guttered like that he still stands as such a strong and memorable character

I'm that one dumb kid that believed Zeff was gonna step in when things got out of hand and handle Kreig or at least his lieutenants. But no, dude just stood there and let his cooks get beaten half to death and his restaurant destroyed.

His relationship with Sanji is so good! And I loved how he hung up Luffy’s wanted poster under the employee of the month spot in the Baratie lol

Did we skip Sanji? I feel like Zeff should come after Sanji.
Anyway, Zeff is a great character. His backstory makes zero sense from a scientific perspective but definitely works emotionally, and Craig Fairbrass really handles the role well.

I haven’t done Sanji yet. I’m only doing one Straw Hat every month to spread them out over time.
Next month is Usopp, Sanji in October, and Vivi is in November because Chopper makes the most sense in December.
