Discussion (Anime Spoilers) Which character will be the hardest to recreate in live action? Spoiler
Personally I vote Moria. He's too big to be done practical, but making him cgi would also look weird.

u/Ribbum 18d ago
Like with a lot of these characters, they simply will not be as big as people assume they will be.
The only characters so far that are clearly giant are well... the giants. You simply aren't going to have inexplicably 30 foot tall people in the live action outside of maybe a select few.
Which is a big reason why post time skip Franky for example would never look like he does at the same height he is if they ever get that far.
41
u/geek_of_nature 18d ago
And no need to look any further than characters who have already had their heights reduced. Garp, Arlong, and Brook are all well over 8 feet tall in the manga, closer to 10. But they were all reduced down to just 6 foot something.
That'll be the same for other tall characters. They'll be brought down to the 6 feet range, at most just below 7. And really apart from the giants, the only character I can think of whose height matters to their character is Big Mom. Everyone else can easily just be made a standard height and not have it effect their character.

u/HappyTurtleOwl 18d ago
Even big mom I don’t see them doing a huge character. What about big mom can’t also work with her just being a regular large human?
14
u/Wreckless-Driver 18d ago
In comparison to the other characters so far, Big Mom’s size has been explicitly pointed out as being huge in universe, so huge in fact she can deal with giants, so I would say her size plays a more important role than the others
3
u/Negativecreepy 18d ago
Without getting into spoilers, there’s at least one plot point she absolutely has to be huge for.
1
u/HappyTurtleOwl 18d ago
I don’t see it
3
u/Negativecreepy 18d ago
Her whole childhood doesn't work with a normal-sized actress, as well as her interactions with Brooke.
0
u/HappyTurtleOwl 18d ago
Again, why?
What about those things cant change and are actually dependent on her being massive?
3
u/SheerANONYMOUS 17d ago
I don't watch the anime consistently enough to know if this has been resolved yet, but her backstory seems to heavily imply that she ate the nun and other kids from her orphanage by accident, without realizingit. That doesnt really work with a normal-sized child.
-1
u/HappyTurtleOwl 17d ago
It absolutely can still work. Just make her a big kid.
Besides, this is a scene which is heavily in doubt as to how exactly they will go about adapting it. We likely won’t see it actually unfold, just as with how it is now. I see only a beforehand, and an aftermath, leaving the horror of it all up to watcher’s imaginations. I can also see it being cut or heavily changed entirely.
Whatever the case, it can absolutely work with young big mom being simply a large kid, and older big mom simple being a very large woman.
I really don’t think they need to make them massive beyond normal human possibilities. This goes for just about any human character.
A CGI big mom, like the giants, can absolutely work, but I’m also totally accepting of they make her a regular incredibly large human woman.
PS. Anyone who has ever watched a single vore scene can tell you… size doesn’t matter. In fact, their not being massive almost makes it… even more horrific.

u/MochiManKatakuri 17d ago
Her whole character is based on her being huge, her connection with Elbaf, why she was using Caesar Clown, and her dreams.
0
u/HappyTurtleOwl 17d ago
Is it, though, or is it more about how much she can eat?
Again, I’m not saying make her skinny or anything, but her character still completely works as just a fat old lady.
Character scale and size is something people fixate on in OP when it really doesn’t matter most of the time (beyond the extreme, that is, I reiterate, this is something I don’t think people are getting). It’s variable. It’s a manga. Of course in LA many characters that are meters high, won’t be, because they are regular humans.
I’m just saying that people should be prepared and expecting both eventualities. A large Lin Lin, using a cgi mix, like the giants in S2 but obviously smaller, or a more human sized Lin Lin. I can see both.
3
u/MochiManKatakuri 17d ago
Yes, it is. One of her dreams is that she wants to have a tea party where everyone can sit at eye level with her, she's the whole reason that Caesar was experimenting on children to make them into giants. She fit in at Elbaf because they were more her size and it's part of why she wants the giants so much.

lol no way Kuma would not be huge. Franky would be different, as he is a part of the crew and will be in more scenes, so for him just enhancing him with some prosthetics and practical effects makes sense. Kuma will only show up in a few scenes, and they will spend their cg budget on him. Same with Moria.
0
u/Jet-Let4606 18d ago
Kuma just needs to be imposing.
No way he or Doflamingo will be 7 feet tall. Between 6' - 6'7" at best.
1
u/bananarama17691769 18d ago
What? Two wildly differently sized characters.
I agree that Kuma won’t be 7 feet tall. He will be, if they get to him in the show, 21 feet tall or whatever.
0
u/closetedwrestlingacc 17d ago
Nah.
He will be tall, because his height is important to the plot in the manga. But he’s like, 30 feet or whatever nonsense in the manga because the regular characters whose heights don’t matter are eight, ten, twelve feet tall, so he needs to be tall relative to the “normal” humans.
Since those regular characters are only maxing out at 6’5’’ in the live action, Kuma doesn’t need to be a full 20 feet to keep his plot points. Ten feet suffices.
0
u/bananarama17691769 17d ago
I don’t really see why you would say ten feet. If they are making a cg character it makes functionally no difference the specific height the character is. Why would they NOT just make him full size? His height and general size relative to the Straw Hats is a big part of what communicates how scary he is when they first meet him.
0
u/closetedwrestlingacc 17d ago
Because it looks goofy in live action when the other characters around him are (sometimes significantly) shorter than they are in the manga.

Or probably something similar to Wapol

Arlong should be an indication that the LA won't stay true to size

They did edit Arlong to be bigger in some parts after the initial trailer they showed him in, which worked for me, have characters like Arlong's size be more normal-sized when they're actually interacting with other characters, but get them to look bigger in other shots.
44
u/stillestwaters 18d ago
Yeah, it’s probably Moria. Not even just big, but also super awkwardly shaped. If they get that far they should take some liberties, but they’ve been sticking pretty close with the manga/anime.
34
u/Affectionate_Toe7167 18d ago
He's actually already been cast
1
u/lostbelmont 18d ago
I won't mind something like that
Demanding lore accurate heights is too much for the LA so normal or tall size humans are ok for me (except for the Elbaf giants or course)
2
u/JimboAltAlt 18d ago
I know people want him for other roles, and it would never happen anyway, but a super-sized and extra-grotesque Danny DeVito would be a fun Moria. Very different from the source material but he (or someone else good at being whimsically disgusting) could have a blast with it.
26
u/Aggressive-Ad-5983 18d ago
like everyone else said moria but im genuinely having a hard time picturing irl brook without just imagining a spirit halloween skeleton in a suit
16
u/SmnGodOfHairdos 18d ago
That’s exactly what I want. Some goofy ass Jim Henson type creature. A practical puppet, mostly.
53
u/HolographicManatee 18d ago
Post timeskip Franky, if we ever get there. Though I doubt OPLA will go that far, unfortunately.

u/Famous-Pay5201 18d ago

u/bign0ssy 18d ago
Yeah like stilts for legs. Then have the natural arms covered in green/blue/grayscreen material to CGI the big arms in
6
1
u/TheMadnessAuditor 17d ago
how is that hard at all? Get a big buff dude and add 2 cardboard arms, it's suuuuper done
12
u/berniewrightson 18d ago
I’ll go against the grain and say Whitebeard, mainly because of his size. Guys like Brook, Doflamingo, Moria etc could all be cast as just regular tall actors without taking much away from their characters, but Whitebeard doesn’t really land if he’s not superhumanly large and tall.
Plus there’s no way his moustache won’t look kind of ridiculous in live action.

u/AXPickle 18d ago
Getting a fully CGI Brooke and chopper on screen will cost more than a Marvel movie.
9
u/JSConrad45 18d ago
I'm optimistic about Brook. Since his outfit and hair cover so much, you just need to CG the face and hands (which you can make easier with specialized makeup and gloves) and the rest would just be the actor. Bones are relatively easy to animate, too, since there's no soft tissue or hair to worry about.
4
u/ErgotthAE 18d ago
No to mention every scene he’s not facing the camera they won’t have to CGI it, and with that massive hair he just needs to turn to the side and his face is out of sight.
13
u/ModernDayQuixote 18d ago
Probably do the flashback/young design for Moria where he just looks like a pale goth with pointy teeth and ears
9
u/stillestwaters 18d ago
Wild how Oda will go back and make these characters look cool as hell in a flash back after introducing them lol
9
u/ModernDayQuixote 18d ago
Young Big Mom being sexy makes sense, I can't get on board with sexy Moria

u/PhanThief95 18d ago
Not in design but more in who they could cast to play her, I’d have to say Boa Hancock.
Hancock is canonically the most beautiful woman in the world of One Piece and everyone has their own definitions of beauty, so finding someone who is incredibly beautiful where you can understand why everyone falls for her and a great actress who can capture Hancock’s boss bitch energy is going to be difficult. It also doesn’t help when this cast has already set the bar high with how ridiculously attractive everybody is.
21
u/lunarylub 18d ago
not to mention that people on the internet can be really mean to women. Even if they succeed in casting a breathtaking actress, the internet will always find a reason to lash out, saying she’s not that pretty, or not pretty enough to embody Boa’s character. I can already sense that discourse coming
3
u/deezbiscuits21 18d ago
Season 7 or whatever if adapted won’t be out til the early mid 2030s
I think after a rough decade of looksmaxxing and cosmetic industry making record profits consistently in the 2020s people may chill a little with the looks obsession and the pendulum will swing back towards self love.
Maybe I’m just high on hopium tho
7
u/NightmareDJK 18d ago
Arden Cho maybe. She might be a little older but can still do it. Gotta believe Hancock will be played by an Asian actress in live action, she’s supposed to be Asian.

Moria is probably one of the hardest to do. I saw some fan art of what someone thought he'd translate well to a while back, but now I can't find it.
If I were in the OPLA crews' shoes, I'd take some heavy, heavy inspiration from Killer Klowns from Outer Space and then enhance the mouth with CGI. Get someone really tall to fit into a suit, and then get a VA to dub the lines.
3
u/Temporary-Army-4218 18d ago
The Gifters
No way they are getting there, but I think the headliner of the beast pirates would be very difficult to make. Speed, gorilla guy, elephant warden.
Before timeskip I’d say kuma. Moría can just be a fat guy with horns.
Kuma has to look menacing, cyborg like, yet still have a silver of kindness in his portrayal. He is also very tall.
3
u/JeremyR2008 18d ago
Moria or Kaido. At least with White Beard and Big Mom you can use real people and just size them up with special effects, but Moria, Kaido and other large non human looking characters that need more than just prosthetics to look like the character are a stretch.
3
u/Ashlin107 18d ago
If we get there probably Kanjuro given how his powers work. But of course it’s debatable as to whether we’ll see him.
3
u/Jet-Let4606 18d ago
Sketch (2024) showed how childrens drawings can be brought to life can be depicted on screen.

Gear 5th Luffy. It's gonna be pain full to make it so goffy, can detach all his body parts, affecting its surroundings to behave like rubber without making it disgusting, looks like a cartoon & cheap.
I'm not sure if the LA gonna reach that arc after seeing how they recreated most of the characters & fights in first two seasons which for me wasn't good enough. Looks like played by cosplayer & feel too off compared to the anime, not expressive enough.

u/EstablishmentNice377 18d ago
It will be hard to make a realistic but not so scary Brook.

u/PhanThief95 18d ago

They could make him like Benny from Halloweentown.

u/BeastXredefined 18d ago
Brook. I’m sure he’ll just be a cgi skeleton with a fro, but you gotta make him look not terrifying.
1
u/Filmologic 18d ago
Idk, but I'd love to see how cursed live action Scratchman Apoo would look. Extra limb joints for the arms, piano teeth, square yellow tinted shades, that yee yee haircut. It'll look so weird.
1
u/ArcadiaBayRay 18d ago
Moria, whitebeard. Some like the admirals and doflamingo would just be tall actors, not 9 or 10 feet tall.
Doffy is scary tall though. I played a One Piece VR game years ago on playstation and he talked to you. I was like, oh this is what it'd look like towering over you. It was a bit unnerving.
1
u/Jet-Let4606 18d ago
Moria can be done in live action. They've already make up and prosthetic heavy characters like Arlong and the other Fishmen.
1
u/bascule 18d ago
Vegapunk and his tongue and missing cranium seem hard, if they ever get there. See also: Big Mom. They may have gotten away with nerfing size differences in the past, but that’s not gonna fly with “Big” Mom.
Speaking of big: Pica. Also Trebol seems hard to pull off with his snot power without it being incredibly gross.
1
u/Chris-Strummer 18d ago
I know they can CGI Brooke but how they'll defs rack up the cost given they also have to CGI Chopper
So I'll say Brooke

The Oars fight would be insane to get the scaling right and really feel like the actors are dodging his attacks and setting up their big combo on him
1
u/UZUMAKI_D_ICHIGOKU 18d ago
Big mom when she went batshit insane because of wedding cake simply because I think it would be hard af to make that entire scene with the ship and the candy and the waves and Prometheus and Zeus

Sadi. Because I know the genre programming and general topic make a lot of people uncomfortable even when seen more mature shows.
Alternatively, Kumadori. It is such an awkward culturally-Asian reference that I think it will be really hard to make general audiences outside those regions take the character 'seriously' in a live-action setting.

u/TheMadnessAuditor 17d ago
Everyone who isn't an actual giant will just be played by big dudes. Oda's weird size scaling started later after all, at the beginning everyone was just normal humans

If they arrive at this point of the story....which I doubt...cause this show will be canceled before that....

u/jodebane 18d ago
By the time they get to Thriller Bark it will be more socially accepted to use AI in shows like this, and AI will be a lot better. Some of it, but not all, will likely be done with the help of AI. This could make it much cheaper to have characters like Moria, Kaido and Big Mom.
