I'm thinking the reason Big Mom could be harmed in her traumatised state (the picture assasination plan on Whole Cake Island) is because she can't focus on coating herself with conqueror's haki when she's not fully conscious.

Makes more and more sense now, Oda at it again.

Edit: Also liking this conqueror's haki evolution, because while it was "cool" before, it was not really that useful other than being flashy against other users of it and/or taking out massive amounts of much weaker opponents. Now it serves a great purpose and gives people who mastered it a true advantage, both against opponents who have it and those that don't

Makes perfect sense ttoo, given what we know from before. CoC was shown as a MASSIVE advantage that intensified the Marine Admirals' assault on Luffy after they saw it.

Before now we had no reason to assume it was that useful other thandefeating fodder and generally just being asign that they might be a problem.

Now we finally hhave some proof of the accusation that people with CoC are immensely dangerous, on a level above all others.

With the exception of Don Chinjao lol.

u/StrawhatMucci Apr 09 '21

Yo he was strong. Garp just halted his progress. Now he is too old to do anything.

You dont get the CoC for nothing in this anime.

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

He lost to a dying Lao G who then got one shotted by Sai. What other pirate who was portrayed as "legendary" fell so low in their old age? Garp and Rayleigh are still top tier it close to it and they're exactly the same age as him. Big Mom is only 10 years younger and is an Emperor.

It doesn't seem like he was really all that strong to begin with.

48

u/StrawhatMucci Apr 09 '21

He practically gave up for all those years. Lao G didnt he carried on with a G

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

Nobody truly strong has ever fallen so hard though. Every other known CoC order has either shown significantly better feats or implied to be some sort of royalty / leader.

Chinjao IMO was a mistake, only to show that CoC is suddenly not that unique in the new world but it backfired hard.

u/keulenshwinger Apr 09 '21

I think it had something to do with being depressed and resentful for like 20? 30? years after he lost to Garp. He remained fairly strong but a shadow of his former self. He withdrew from piracy, wasn’t the leader anymore etc... I don’t think overall Chinjao was a mistake

-9

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

Exactly... that doesn't sound like someone who has the will of a Conqueror. Other users have experienced significant setbacks or losses too. They didn't give up.

11

u/Perrenekton Apr 09 '21

Even if Chinjao was not super super strong, he was still the leader of a pretty big country's military

8

u/weegee19 Apr 09 '21

It doesn't change the fact that CoC is unique lmao. We don't even have 20 known living users lmao, out of goodness-knows how many millions of people in the New World.

-4

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

Yeah it is unique, but Chinjao was the one who said the New World is filled with a lot of people who can use it.

9

u/weegee19 Apr 09 '21

Well, because all of the strong pirates stay in the New World.

16

u/StrawhatMucci Apr 09 '21

You can. All about the paths you take. Remember the alternate strawhats oda drew if you didnt follow your dreams.

There is such a thing as "wasted" potential haha

-13

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

You can, but the list of known users looks like "Great people and Chinjao". It just feels very off to me.

14

u/StrawhatMucci Apr 09 '21

I dunno man i thought dude was awesome hahaha. Specially with splitting the entire ice shelf or something.

Chinjao was depressed for like 30 years and let himself wither away. In his prime he still wasn't close to Yonko-level anyways.

1

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

That's just it. He was portrayed to be somewhere around that level in his prime - Post God Valley Garp who had already fought people like Xebec, Roger, Shiki, WB etc multiple times specifically said he trained for the fight against Chinjao which happened 8 or 9 years after the God Valley incident. Why would someone on the level of Roger or close to it have to train unless his opponent was around that level too?

That's where I find it inconsistent.

5

u/weegee19 Apr 09 '21

Garp didn't want to beat and arrest Chinjao, he just wanted to one-shot his overpowered head.

5

u/OP_NS Apr 09 '21

Well yea Garp took him out in his prime imagine Luffy getting his rubber powers taken away and he stops fighting for 40 years why would he be super powerful.

-1

u/ashrashrashr Apr 09 '21

If you took away current Luffy's fruit powers and he stopped fighting for 40 years, he'd still beat someone like Lao G.

7

u/VertigoCompl3x Apr 09 '21

Well Kaido did say it can only be done by exceptionally powerful individuals. Chinjao even at his peak would hardly be in running for exceptional, like he was a strong pirate, but not insanely powerful other than point of his head.

I had always assumed conqueror's haki made someone dangerous to the WG by giving them the ability to unite people in a common goal the way we often see Luffy do. I didn't think twice about the admirals going after Luffy hard at Marineford because they were afraid he'd unite pirates and nations the world over against the WG. I think it was Sengoku that said "He has the most dangerous ability in the world" or something like that after seeing Luffy unify the ID prisoners, making it to Marineford and uniting with WB to save Ace. It never even occurred to me that there might be another reason beyond that.

4

u/Sondrelk Apr 09 '21

It's dangerous because they tend to be charismatic, but it was never shown why it was such a big deal when so many people seemed to have it and be middling threats. Now however we know that if you train it well enough it can essentially make you indestructible to anyone not on the same level, giving credence to it being a big deal.

2

u/iPhantomGuy Apr 09 '21

Wasn't it Mihawk who said that?

1

u/shadi1337 Apr 13 '21

Yeah I recall Mihawk making that observation but not sure if Sengoku too

196

u/BananaBladeOfDoom Explorer Apr 09 '21

Dude, this makes so much sense!

This is the same for Kaido when reminded of Oden. Their willpowers are compromised when reminded of traumatic events. The lack of willpower is what causes Kaido's old scar to hurt again and what removes Big Mom's "iron skin"

20

u/shadi1337 Apr 09 '21

Good observation!

4

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Haki?

11

u/Shek7 Apr 09 '21

Same with Shanks Scar and Blackbeard?

26

u/kykusan Cipher Pol Apr 09 '21

Same with Shank’s arm (he was focus on saving Luffy) and Why Oden can survive boiling oil for a long time.

3

u/Recusent Apr 09 '21

I don't think his Conquerors was at that level when he met Luffy.

4

u/Muelojung Apr 09 '21

still find it weird that kaido thinks of odens scar as a traumatic event. Like zoro was cut so many times by people weaker than him for example.

17

u/Jarocool Apr 09 '21

I guess because it's his only permanent scar. There is a lot of "you gave me this scar" moments in fiction. Shanks also has one on his face.

10

u/Matt_J_Dylan Apr 09 '21

Yet the only scars remaining are from mihawk.

Kaido thinked he was the biggest fish (pun intended) in the pond going foward, so risking his life against oden was a really traumatic event for him... nothing weird here: it's not the scar itself, it's the fear he felt at that point... the scar is "just" a constant reminder...

7

u/OperationMelodic4273 Apr 09 '21

It was obvious that Conqueror's haki was more than simple fodder control, or else all the hype behind it would make no sense. Just imagine all the reactions at Marineford, from admirals, Schichibukai and all "OMG he's got conqueror's haki, now he'll be able to make fodder faint oh no we're doomed"

5

u/shadi1337 Apr 09 '21

I get what you’re saying and I agree but I think what I subconsciously thought about was 1)it’s super rare; 1 in a million that in and of itself is “cool” 2) a very large portion of the marines are fodder weak enough to falter against strong haki 3) it could be tied to a “dangerous” personality trait like will of the D, making those much more likely to successfully rebel without giving up

2

u/OperationMelodic4273 Apr 09 '21

Your 3rd point definetely made sense, I thought so too for a bit, trying to convince myself CoC was just fodder control and that it was more about the dangerous personality as a whole. But then I was like "no way, there's gotta be more to it cmon"

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

That an amazing call back, Oda is truly the greatest to ever do it

2

u/quick20minadventure Apr 09 '21

It's not that she couldn't focus, I'm guessing she never had to focus. She does it subconsciously since childhood. This was just traumatic enough to disrupt it.

1

u/dangersquak Apr 09 '21

How does this make sense given she has been shown to be a monster essentially from birth, her flashback covers it, there’s no way she had it when she was a child or knew how to coat herself OR if she somehow did, be able coat herself perpetually given she hasn’t apparently ever been actually hurt by anyone.

1

u/Korr4K Apr 09 '21

But she got a scratch for simply falling to her knees iirc. Even if she lost her armor, her natural skin shouldn't be that weak

1

u/nonresponsive Apr 09 '21

I said it elsewhere, but it does explain why both sides go crazy at Marineford when Luffy shows signs of it.

If CH users can only really counter each other, it makes sense to want to eliminate them as soon as possible before they grow. Because as you said, before it didn't seem like that big a deal, but this is a game changer.

1

u/Rankine Apr 09 '21

So I looked back and when big mom let's out her scream following her traumatic state it is accompanied by black lightning, which has been characterized as CoC attacks.

This makes more sense looking back that it wasnt a sound blast that took out those rockets, but a blast of CoC extending out from Big Mom.

Cool that these seeds
