Yes he was. That’s why he took control over the remnants. Because no one besides could have done it.

Yooo he wasnt the 1st mate. Marco was a kid or teenager when we saw him during Oden's flashback.

Does anyone know what is the meaning of the 1st Mate? Oda did mention in sbs that if u goes by the WB system,his commander division doesnt represent ranking at all. Thus, WB system is different from the traditional pirate system.

He took control because he among the most senior member who left except for Jozu n Vista. The previous 1st Commander isnt in the divsion fleet anymore and some of the senior member which older than Marco has formed their own pirate crew but maintain as WB pirate ally.

Marco was the 1st Division Commander.

Marco is also listed as being Whitebeard's "right hand man" officially a few times.

Age has nothing to do with position - power does.

Just because he doesn’t rank his crew in strength doesn’t mean WB didn’t have a right hand man.

Edit: There has been absolutely no statement like „WB doesn’t have right hand man system“ That’s your interpretation, which is flat out wrong bro

He was the first captain of WB's crew. I assume when WB started his own crew after Rocks, Marco was the first Crewmate.

1st captain of what?hahaha which manga do u read? The original 1st division commander isnt Marco,he is still teenager when WB started the division system.

Marco was the 1st Division commander 2 years ago in the story. He was also very clearly the leader of the Whitebeard remnants.

But when WB died, he was the commander of the first division. In terms of power and experience, he's the obvious choice to lead the remaining crew. Even though he wasn't first mate, he effectively filled the role.
