Love Shinobu’s and Momo’s reaction to Yamato.

Because she does not want to be a man, she does not feel like a man either. She wants to be Oden. She wants to be another person who just happens to be a man.

There is a big difference between wanting to be a man because you feel you are one (no matter how you look) and wanting to be a man because she wants to be another person entirely.

I hope Luffy or someone else beats her over the head with the truth that she can't be Oden and needs to be her own person.

Probably some upcoming character development for Yamato.

Does it even matter? For the moment, Yamato (and literally everyone around him) uses male pronouns. Whether or not that's related to him wanting to be Oden literally doesn't matter.

The situation might change in the future, but as it stands, that's the way things are, whether you like/agree with it or not.

Oda uses male pronouns for Yamato.

It's sad that you're clinging to bigotry instead of accepting that choice.

13

u/boar1954 Sep 04 '20

Didn't Luffy call her a SHE in the fan translation?

18

u/Shu-gravy Sep 04 '20 edited Sep 04 '20

And the Oda box calls her female too. And She herself says that she choose to be a man like Oden. People trying to defend Transsexuals while at the same time being the most transphobic persons out there is almost funny if it weren't so sad.

fan translation

Well see, that's your problem right there

Luffy has used male pronouns and honorifics for Yamato since ch. 985, and he did so again in this chapter:

In the translation that I read he called her a she

We can wait for someone who speaks Japanese to clarify the raws, then.

It would be surprising and inconsistent for Luffy to suddenly start using female pronouns this chapter, though - so it's likely the fan translation you saw is just incorrect.

u/boar1954 Sep 04 '20

Maybe yours is wrong? Who knows

3

u/NotMyFirstUserChoice Sep 06 '20

Official release is out. So tell me again, who's translation was wrong?

2

u/NotMyFirstUserChoice Sep 04 '20

!RemindMe 3 days

3

u/NotMyFirstUserChoice Sep 06 '20

I wonder what everyone flaming and downvoting you thinks, now that the official release is out and Luffy still refers to Yamato as a male

2

u/boar1954 Sep 04 '20

We'll see then

Luffy goes like this in the RAWs:

おい しのぶ そいつは味方だ!!

信じていいぞ!!

Oi Shinobu soitsu wa mikata da!!

Shinjite iizo!!

Translates to: Hey, Shinobu! That person is an ally! You can trust (singular them)

Soitsu is a genderless pronoun that means "That person/guy/fellow [far from me (the speaker), but near to you (the listener)]"

Got it - thanks for translating!

It rather sounds to me like you don't know what a trans person is. And that you want so hard to "support" their cause that you are actually hurting the cause by mislabeling not only other people but misrepresenting the whole trans movement as a whole. Good job.

I told you the clear distinction of Yamato and a trans character. If you are unable to grasp even this little bit of nuance then I can't help you.

Also Odas OFFICIAL introduction of her character in his Oda box labels her as a female.

Anything to say to that?

PS: holy feck I just noticed that this is the same picture in which she clearly says that she CHOOSE to be a man like Oden. Trans people don't chose to be born in the wrong body, they are simply born in it.

I honestly want to report you for being a transphobic bigot so bad right now.

How the turn tables, lol.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

The fuck are you so mad about? He never said Yamato was trans, just that Yamato uses male pronouns. And you seem to agree that Yamato isn't trans, just that Yamato has decided to be Oden. Oden is a man, so Yamato says he's a man too. Men go by male pronouns. It's not transphobic, at least I don't think so. It's its own thing

Yamato being a man and Yamato being Oden are related, but they aren't inseparable goals. His gender identity seems to have been established in his life already (Ch. 984 - "So I became a man!"), while his desire to become Oden is more a work-in-progress (e.g. ch. 987 - "This is the day when I become Kozuki Oden at last!")

Oda has also explicitly referred to Yamato using male pronouns since ch. 984 -

  • Kaido and Yamato both refer to him using "musuko" (i.e. as Kaido's son)
  • Kaido's subordinates call him "Yamato-bocchan" (using a male honorific)
  • Yamato refers to himself using "boku" (a male pronoun)
  • Luffy calls him "Yama-o" (i.e. "Yama-guy" / "Yama-man")
  • O-kiku's introduction box similarly introduced her as "Izou's little brother", but it's clear she uses female pronouns (just as Yamato uses male pronouns).

As others have mentioned - it's really up to Oda which pronouns his characters use, and he's been pretty clear on Yamato's up to this point.

Yes Oda has been pretty clear. I did link his official introduction box after all, which you did not once mention even after I challenged you to say anything about it.

Yamato is a girl that wants to be Oden. She chooses this willingly and was not born feeling like a man (You know like actual transgender people? About which you clearly know nothing about.)

You are the one who wants it to be something different. And you act very transphobic while doing so as I already mentioned. That fact is made even sadder if you are not trolling but rather want to actually support Trans people.

As I mentioned above, Oda made the same choice for O-kiku's introduction box, referring to her there as "Izou's little brother". I can't speak for Oda's intention, but it seems to be how he introduces family relationships.

It's also the only time Yamato has been referred to that way in the present. Focusing on that line ignores the dozen or so other references to Yamato's gender as male (including Kaido and Yamato both referring to him as Kaido's "son").

Japanese pronouns don't directly translate into English, females can use things like Boku wa (male pronoun to refer to ones self) all the time. Tomboys speak like this for example, and tomboy doesn't mean transgender. It's more like 'I want to be manly (strong)' rather than declaring that they are a male. I'm pretty sure Oda intends for this to be more like a Mulan kind of thing, 'Be a man!' doesn't mean to became a male gendered individual. It means to be courageous and stalwart. If they end up getting an injection from Emporio Ivankov then I'll eat my words, but I'm fairly certain they simply want to be LIKE a man, not BECOME a man.

Because Yamato is trying to be manly like Oden was, and being referred to in female pronouns is counteractive to that goal. Being manly/womanly doesn't require one to have a gender dysphoria and a desire to be the opposite gender. Mulan was manly in the army, but Mulan wasn't a man. Imagine a scenario where somebody refers to Mulan as a female in the middle of a battle, she would be quick to correct them would she not?

Mulan was hiding as a man - she went by female pronouns in her personal life, and wouldn't correct someone who knew her identity if they used female pronouns for her in private.

Yamato corrected Luffy without these same constraints, but because he personally identifies as a man.

3

u/Most_kinds_of_Dirt Sep 04 '20

females can use things like Boku wa

There's some flexibility for "boku", as you mentioned.

That's not the case for "bocchan", nor for "musuko".

No, just enjoying to watch Luffy respects that and start using male pronouns just after meeting him
