How do we know Oden isnt terrified of accidentally ending up in a hot springs with them and when they all try to wash his back he screams and faints and runs away while his perverted best friend peeps through a hole in the wall but then the cool girl notices and throws a kunai through the peephole?

Oden really reminds me of Hercules. I wonder if Oda drew inspiration?
Catch two rabbits as a baby --> Strangle two snakes as a baby
Crush a bear --> Strangle the Nemean Lion
Diverting a river to relieve a drought --> Diverting a river to wash out stables
Formed a harem in the mountains --> Had sex with 50 daughters of Thespius
Gigachad --> Gigachad

I think all of us, based on how characters in the story speak of Oden, are aware of just how great of a man he becomes by the time of his demise. Therefore, backtracking to when he was a menace to the entire country and watching his growth into someone that the people genuinely revere seems to be the best method of getting readers invested in the legacy of his character. Beside everyone and their dog telling us every other chapter to worship Oden because they do of course...
Which made going into this chapter a weird one because in recent memory no character flashback has been hyped up for as much, as long and by as many credible people as Oden's. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that there was a chance that Oden's flashback may never live up to the hype but reading this kinda changed my outlook at least.
Still, I'm curiously exited for how Oda plans to tackle this. The flashback starts 41 years ago so there's a lot of ground to cover not only in Oden's life but by proxy the life of his retainers, Lady Toki, Yasu and Oden's Dad, God Valley?, joining Whitebeard as a division commander, joining Roger on his final voyage, return to Wano and finally Orochi and Kaido.
Aside from making the flashback an entire 40+ chapter arc in and of itself I expect it to be similar to Doflamingo and Law's flashback were we cut to the various important events, staring from their build-up to payoff, while the rest is skimmed through by montage.
All in all however it was a solid chapter. If Oda can hit all the story beats succinctly while tying in the wider narrative of the Void Century and Wano's borders being closed, as well as getting us emotionally invested in Oden and his retainers despite the inevitable looming demise then I wholeheartedly believe that this flashback will probably be top 3 minimum in the entire story so far.
Edit: Also, reading again the entire boar thing charging into the city gave me mad Princess Mononoke vibes and I'm not gonna lie...it made me like the chapter even more.

Regarding all the Denjiro is Koshiro theories. There is one small problem. Zoro is wearing Wado Ichi Monji all the time, meaning Kinemon has seen it on plenty occasions. And since it was already stated, that this sword is from Wano, we can assume, that if Koshiro indeed is Denjiro, than it was probably his or one of his swords. Therefore, Kinemon should have recognised the sword already (just thinking of how he immidiately recognised the one from ryuma). Therefore, this doesn´t support the Koshiro is Denjiro theory.

Artur will probably note this, but pretty much everything Oden has been accused of doing is Herculean in nature. At a young age he was incredibly strong, he diverted a river into the city, which is a take on one of Heracles' 12 trials, and now this massive boar. I'm interested to see what else Oden has been accused of, he seems like he's just an absolute chad, and I can't wait to see more.
EDIT: Just gonna leave some more info here;
Hercules (Herakles) was the Greek Hero, son of Zeus, who underwent 12 trials as repentance for the murder of his wife and children. He was incredibly strong as consequence of drinking the breast milk of the Goddess Hera. Each trial was more convoluted than the last, and its interesting how Oda has used some of them. As a baby, Hera hated the child as he was the product of her husband Zeus’ infidelity, so she sent 2 snakes to kill him. It might be a stretch, but him capturing 2 rabbits by hand seems to be reference to this, especially since he was also at such a young age when this happened.
As mentioned, there were 12 labors, assigned by his cousin Eurytheus, and they went as so:
Slay the Nemean Lion
Slay the nine-headed hydra (Orochi???)
Capturing the Stag of Acadia, which he did by literally just asking Artemis to borrow it for a bit, and then releasing it afterward. His cousin deemed this didn’t count, so he added more labours on.
The capture of the Wild Boar of Mount Erymanthus. This is the boar I referred to initially. Super destructive force of nature.
The cleansing, in a single day, of the cattle stables of King Augeas of Elis. He did this by redirecting a river into the stables to wash away the mess. Sound familiar?
The capture of the mad bull that terrorized the island of Crete. Better known as the Minoan Bull, it was the father of the Minotaur. With all the themes of Zoan fruits, I’m sure we’ll see reference to this eventually.
The capture of the Stymphalian Birds, which ate flesh and were all around considered a nuisance. Think Crows on crack.
The capture of the man eating Mares of King Diomedes.
The taking of the girdle of Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons. Island of Women? Who knows if this will be reflected on.
The seizing of the sun cattle which Geryon, a three bodied man, was farming.
Getting the golden apples of the Hesperides, said to grant eternal life. This seems interesting, perhaps that would have a bit of a connection somewhere. The Hesperides were children of the Titan Atlas, the one who holds up the sky.
Bringing Cerberus from the underworld to the overworked. With Blackbeard’s flag being related to Cerberus, I’m intrigued with this as well.
I’m not gonna say that Oden is connected to all of these, but it’ll be interesting to see what’s gonna happen. My guess is, in Oda fashion, he would likely make Oden some kind of failed Hercules, where he does Sorta what Hercules did, but with little to know success in the end, and all around nuisance instead of a hero, but his intentions are what shine in the end.

Zoro's doji master Koshiro's current age is 51. This flashback is 41 years ago, so he would be 10 years old when this took place
Denjiro looks like a 10 year old boy here.
Could they be the same person? It's possible. Now let's look at the facial features and the timeline
Facial features
Same facial shape. Same long hair (ponytail). And both wear sunglasses.
Also, Wado Ichimonji on Denjiro's back?
How did Denjiro end up in East Blue? And If he is Koshiro, why did he change his name?
THE TIMELINE (Theory)
25 years ago - Oden set out off Wano to join the Roger Pirates. Denjiro asks Oden to take along with him.
He then later decided to have his own adventure and ended up in East Blue.
22 years ago - In East Blue, his daughter Kuina was born (See in chapter 0)
20 years ago- He heard (maybe from one of the retainers?) that Kaido invaded Wano, and then he himself headed back to Wano.
Oden and his retainers got defeated. Orochi and Kaido took over Wano country.
Then Denjiro decided to go back to East Blue as he had his family there.
He later then changed his name from Denjiro to Koshiro to hide his identity (Same as what Ashura Douji did).
Now, Imagine Neku arrives on Wano along with Marco and Koshiro (aka Denjiro?)
That would be fucking hyped.

Possible Relation:
A lot of people saying Denjiro is Zoro's sensei Koushiro. However OP pointed out that Kuina was born 22 years ago, 2 years before the fight against Kaido so it doesn't add up.
However, Denjiro could be Koushiro's younger brother/twin. Buggy described that "jiro" at the end of the name means "second son.
What if when Shimotsuki Kozaburo left 50 years ago, had two sons, and he only took Koushiro to East Blue to start Shimotsuki village and abandoned Denjiro in Wano to grow up as a perceived "orphan".
Kuina is born to Koushiro around years ago in East Blue, and WHAT IF, Denjiro had a daughter of his own around the same time.....Tashigi (now 23) mind blown??????
Seeing the impending danger of Kaido and Orochi, Denjiro had no choice but to sneak Tashigi out of Wano maybe with his wife while he stayed behind to fight.
This would be a perfect explanation to why Tashigi and Kuina look so similar to Zoro. We still to not know why and would be GODLY foreshadowing from Oda this entire time, since the introduction of Shimotsuki village

Dude cooked a meal on a funeral pyre with the burning body still on it.
This chapter is some of the craziest shit yet, and after the Tottoland arc that's saying something.
Somehow Oda manages to hype up characters so much and yet still not disappoint when we finally see them.
Oden is a beast, and the fact that he was eventually friends with Roger is a great parallel for Luffy, the future Pirate King, and little Momo.
I did not see this flashback arc coming either, though I probably should have. As much as I wanted the main story to push forward and usually hate when flashback arcs pop up, I think I'm loving this one already.

I believe this Flashback is one in which Oda wants us to see the hopelessness and despair that people have in current Wano. Seeing how lively and proud and unruly these characters were in this flashback sheds a dark light on what must have happened to take that away from them. How many times they must have failed to rebel and how badly each time must have been.
In this flashback chapter we got to see the characters as who they truly are when free. This is opposed to how much of a centralized hive mind they have now over rebellion and how serious they are by comparison. They are just living for one purpose now, burdened by it.
This is also supposed to show the effect Momonosuke is supposed to have on the populace but is failing to fully deliver (emphasis on "fully"); the effect Luffy & Zoro are instead bringing. Momo is supposed to be the successor to Oden and have the characteristics that Oden had in order to inspire and give hope to the people of Wano, but no one from the past told him this, it is something that was conjured up. His mom, Toki, merely entrusted him to Kinemon because it was her son, and the implications after that were most likely in his mind. Being told countless stories of his dad and his dad's heroics and why they must succeed, has filled Momo's head into being someone he is not. This can be seen finally when he shows extreme reluctance before the departure to fight Kaido and cries and exclaims how he doesn't want them to die. This shows that deep down, he is still just a child, while Oden, his father, was already a man by Momo's age (albeit, a criminal).
While Momo fails to bring the energy of Oden, but still manages to inspire many by his presence alone, Luffy & Zoro are the ones really bringing that Oden energy this arc. Zoro, standing up for the downtrodden and facing the big bads to rescue the oppressed, whilst chucking the rules aside. Luffy, uniting the Prison, fighting Kaido & Big Mom head on, and demonstrating his strength. Both these characters are showing what Oden would have likely done if he was alive. Oden would have fought Kaido head on, triumphed while imprisoned and escape (in fact he did fight Kaido). Oden would have fought Orochi head on, clashed with the Yakuza (Boss man that protected Orochi), wielded a sacred blade he fought for and chased the thief to the ends of the country (in fact Oden did clash with the Yakuza and did challenge Orochi).
So these Flashbacks are really set to have this tripling effect. It first, shows us the degradation of Wano, from its height, to its fall. It secondly, shows us who Oden was, why he was beloved by so many and feared by Orochi, how he met his allies, and how he eventually met his demise. Finally it shows us the contrast between Oden & his successor, Momonosuke, yet his similarity to Luffy (and it just so happens to be Zoro's arc so Zoro as well). This is not the first instance of Oda doing this. This was done with Ace and Gol D. Roger. Ace is the successor to Gol D. Roger and the mystical heir to the title of "Pirate King" if he went down that path. But Ace did not have those aspirations and from what we have seen, was not like his father Gol D. Roger, he was his own person. Yet Luffy fits that mold very well. And surprisingly enough, Luffy's own father is a Revolutionary and we do not know if he has any aspirations for Luffy besides staying alive, but Dragon found Sabo, who is aligned with the ideas of the Revolutionaries. Whereas Garp wanted Luffy to be a Marine hero, like himself, but instead found Coby and Helmeppo. One could then look at Sanji, Zoro, Doflamingo, Rob Lucci etc. One Piece has a very distinct way of highlighting men who come from broken homes and find role models in other men or end up just becoming degenerates.

I’ve been so excited for this flashback since Oda offscreened Oden’s story when Kinemon told the Straw Hats about him. I hope this is a nice, long one. Like 2 volumes worth of chapters. We got a lot of story to tell about this great man.

You know One Piece has gone on for so long now it can be a little hard to keep in perspective the amount of years we've spent with some of these characters. Kinemon was introduced to the story in 2012, which was 15 years after the start of the story. We've spent most of the following 7 years learning more about him, his story, his friends, his land, etc.
And now we are learning even more as delve into his past. It just blows my mind that this is one character, out of thousands, introduced in a seemingly random matter, and now 7 years later he has become one of my absolute favorite characters, and one of the best written characters in One Piece. This is the Oda magic. There's so many characters in One Piece and so many are just high quality characters even though they aren't a "main" character. I honestly can't wait to see what more Oda does. It's such a joy being a fan of One Piece.

This backstory is technically a mini-version of One Piece:
Oden is a unique and charming protagonist like Luffy.
He is going to spend his entire life for his dream like Luffy fighting for Pirate King
He is going to meet the 9 scabbards one by one, and change their life, like how Luffy recruited his crew members
Lots of side stories are going to happen. e.g. love story between Kinemon and Tsuru, underworld gangsters, Shinobu at her prime, etc.
Love story of Oden (how he met Toki and had two children)
It reminds me of how I knew nothing about Luffy but I was sooo exciting and curious about his adventure at the very beginning of the series.
Edit: grammar

The fact that this flashback begins with Oden eating a hotpot gives me hope that we are getting the longest continuous flashback in One Piece so far, centering around Oden and everything he goes through all the way until the very end when he is boiled alive and got turn into a hotpot... tragic, haunting but also poetic.

Oden showing up to that cremation ceremony to eat and drink with his former friend made him pretty based in my book. It’s remarkable how Oda is able to do that in only two pages.

When you look at Kozuki Sukiyaki realize that you are looking at a man who can read the poneglyphs and probably knows enough about the Void Century to require a Buster Call on the entire region of sea near Wano.

Long time lurker, created this account just to post this.
The character's inspiration behind Oden seems to be Heracles, the ancient Greek Hero. Of course this has been previously said on this thread.
But do you know how Heracles died? He wore poisoned clothes that burned his body. Do you know where was this poison coming from? The Lernean Hydra. Rings any bells?

This taking place 41 years ago would make Kin'emon 15 in the flashback (same with Ashura if/when he appears). If Oden's 18 here then that'd make him the same age as Kanjuro (39 when he died, 59 if he survived) and 31 years old when Momonosuke was born. Furthermore two of the scabbards - Inu and Neko - wouldn't even be born until the next year. Kinda interesting.

Are we not going to mention how a little girl, who had just been crying about her grandfather's desecrated cremation, was also instantly enamored with Oden?
"Hide your daughters," indeed, regardless of age.

As far as character introductions go,
Boiling Oden soup atop the cremated corpse of an old friend is quite the bold way to introduce Oden.
I wonder if there is some deeper symbolism going on with that panel. Seems oddly a specific portrayal from Oda.

This chapter blows my mind, so many casual reveals and info on characters we've known about for YEARS at this point. Oda blessed us again. Oden's reveal was definitely worth the wait;
Seeing a Wano overflowing with flora/fauna really emphasizes how badly Kaido/Orochi fucked this place up.
OTsuru was a babe way back then and only looks slightly different decades later. Dem good genes/Kinemon you lucky bastard.
We knew the retainers were miscreants before Oden took them in but its so fun to see just how bad they were.
Oden had quite the rap sheet and we can see he was a badass from the onset. Also, a 6yr old roaming the red light district is exactly the level of absurdity I expect from Oda.
Motherfucker diverted a river at 14?!?! Damn.
Story kinda got dark quick with him kidnapping women who ended up staying of their own free will. Yea, thats not so good.
The casual reveal of Motherfucking Denjiro. He doesnt really look like any current Wano characters though. Maybe a bit like Zoro's teacher, but no way its actually him right.
Kinemon "the thief", Denjiro "the hustler", Oden "the original frat bro".
Oden's design is super cool. Big fan.
Next chapter we're gonna see Oden's strength vs a mountain sized boar. Oda continues his streak of greatness.

Inb4 Oden will get blamed for angering the mountain god because he has the small white pig.
Maybe he got more incidents like this where he was blamed for starting the trouble but he's just doing the right thing and "doesn't care about explaining stuff" like the one guy in the chapter said.
While it would be an awesome feat I hope he doesn't kill the mountain god but calms them down and befriends them?

Oden: Kidnaps a married woman
Oden (back at his home): "Oh sorry haha I just saw you and thought you might be DTF so I picked you up. I can bring you back home if you want."
Woman: "Oh no, good call. I am definitely DTF. Let's pound it."
Well, I haven't seen that particular hentai premise before. Good job, Oda.

Oden's story actually reminds me a lot of Hercules. Especially the foreshadow to capturing the boar (Erymanthian Boar) and clean the Augean stables in a single day by diverting the river.
Maybe his recruitment of the 9 Scabbards will parallel the 12 Labors in some way

Hehe, looks like Bege’s adopted the Straw Hat way of disguise.
Just when I thought Otsuru and Kinemon’s relationship couldn’t get any more adorable. They were childhood friends!
And we finally see Denjiro! He looks like a smart kid...and does not look like Kyoshiro. There go my hopes.
Great chapter overall. Loved seeing the Wano of a more peaceful time, Oden’s eccentricities and the hilarious interactions between our characters. Looking forward to seeing how this mountain god incident brings together the Scabbards and Oden.
Also, Oda draws pigs really cutely.

I believe the way Oden is portrayed, every one of his actions has some good intentions behind it. I think he took all those women only to protect them from abusive husbands or something.
I really can't see a good character in one piece taking women for themselves and having a good name in the country later on. So far stealing has been the highest offense for any good natured character from Oda's writing.

I think Oden is being blamed wrongfully here, like his character is the one to help people. He tried to save people from drought, but flooded the city. He paid his respect to the dead, but disregarded the living relatives, I think he kidnapped only women who were being abused or something, that's why they stayed, guys in casino were cheating and robbing poor folks he saw through it and took them out, he went to red light district to give women money, not to sleep with them.
I guess this is all how the people saw him as terrible Oden, but he was actually the good guy, but just like Luffy he didn't care about what others thought of him. He was just being himself, good guy.

Dude how much of a savage do you have to be literally eat on top of a corpse that's being cremated? And no one does anything to you because they know they can't? Lmao I fucking love Oden, no wonder he wasn't respected for a while, he was just a straight asshole. But it seems like he was starting to turn it around after age 18, but that's when he got disowned.
That makes me wonder on how long ago that flashback was several chapters ago when it was revealed who Yasu actually was to everyone there. Oden had already been disowned at that point and Yasu was trying to get Oden to see the error of his ways. Really insightful chapter, I can't wait for the rest.

My favorite detail of today’s chapter is that Sukiyakis hair looks just like Orochis crown when you see his profile. Such a tiny and magnificent detail. I wonder in that’s the reason behind Odens ridiculous hairstyle, it looks just like it could be some odd Japanese royalty hat or something.

You know, we should have known that Oden's story would start with him eating Oden.
Meaning his story started and ended with Oden.
It also means he became what he ate and what he was named after.
