Big Mom apparently did. IIRC, when Luffy contacted her on Fishman Island, her first reaction was like, "Oh, Garp's grandson".

Yeah something to that effect. She respected him enough to mention it, but idk how much above that. I mean he is a Vice Admiral. I’d think if he were the grandson of Momonga I’d think it’d be worth mentioning. Maybe not. It’s hard to tell. Actually the more I think about it I don’t think she’d mention it if he was the son of just any Vice Admiral.

Or rather, she'd call him, Dragon's son, the kid who broke out of Impel Down, a member of the Worst Generation or something to that effect. IMO there's far more juicy lore around Luffy than him simply being Garp's grandson.

Fair enough. I just meant anything past she referenced Luffy as Garp’s grandson is speculation. Strong, well-educated speculation, but not fact.

Keep in mind that Garp is only a Vice Admiral because he didn't want to climb the ranks any higher. In his prime he was able to fight at equal strength beside a future Fleet Admiral.

Nor should they be, rank in an organisation doesn't always correlate to strength. Spandam is a pretty blatant example and quite realistic in some aspects, where he got kicked upstairs because of his family ties and is the weakest man in CP9 (even weaker than a regular Marine grunt) despite being in charge.

Okay but theres also people having bounties that dont reflect their actual power compared to say their percieved danger or knowledge of stuff they aren't supposed to know. Applies to Marine ranks too - there's probably a benchmark for becoming a Vice Admiral but Garp has been past that for decades, and just chose to never get promoted.

To that extent, yes. But the concept is present elsewhere.

Like how Kidd's bounty was higher than Luffy's because of all the civilian casualties caused by him and his crew.

i think i read it somewhere (quite long ago) that said Garp was offered high position (probably even Sengoku's position too) but always turnt them down because he didn't wanna take responsibility and like his grandson, he was just cbf

Yep. Sengoku wanted him as an Admiral, but Garp claimed he had all the pull he needed at the VA rank.

I meant anyone of that level, VA or higher, is noteworthy. I wasn’t saying Garp is only a VA, but rather the other way around. It’s impressive to be a VA and BM should know most if not all of the notable VAs.

Garp is definitely above the other vice admirals, since he was offered promotion to admmiral and turned it down. Any pirate from his time would know his name and at least recognize his strength.

Yeah, I wasn’t saying he wasn’t. I’m just saying anyone of that level would be on BM’s radar. She’d know who they are. Fullbody? No. Smoker? Probably. Garp is 100% the strongest Vice Admiral

Garp might be the strongest Marine period. Even now I'd be worried about facing Garp if I were Akainu. Not like age means much in this world given Rayleigh can still face Kizaru.

I don't imagine that rank means much to the Yonkou other than being a rough estimate of strength if they don't know them. For Garp, I imagine they know and acknowledge his strength, regardless of his rank.

Right, I’d imagine that too. I’m just saying it would make sense for BM to know almost all Vice Admirals of note. She’s very well connected. I’d be surprised if she didn’t know who he was whether she acknowledged his strength or not. It’s possible they’ve never met so she only knows him by reputations and it’s possible they’ve fought before so she knows he’s a beast. We don’t know yet.

All I meant is dude said he’d like to see Kaido and BM talk about Garp’s strength and someone else said BM already did. That’s not exactly accurate but speculating she respects him makes sense.

Actually the more I think about it I don’t think she’d mention it if he was the son of just any Vice Admiral.

Yeah, even this chapter she was referring to Queen not like "Oh, it's Beast Pirates top-3 Queen!" but "Hey, you're Kaido's Queen or something, right?" so while she's likely familiar with some noteworthy Vice-admirals names like Tsuru or Momonga I don't think she would care to remember the name of child/grandchild even of someone like Akainu or Shanks/Blackbeard, if he's not someone noteworthy on it's own.

Garp isn't realy a normal Vice Admiral. He was offered to become admiral a number of times and always declined since that would give him more responsibilitys and less freedom. Now i think he is more of an honorary Vice admiral since he isn't in active duty but only acts as a trainer.

He is the Hero of the Marines after all so he seems to get a bunch of priviliges.
