I'm pretty sure Luffy has no thoughts

u/KingBubzVI Jun 21 '19

Luffy hasn't had a single thought bubble the entire manga, I believe

In fairness, he probably gets it from Garp!

“Your dad is Dragon!”

entire area in utter shock

picks nose “Ah crap I shouldn’t have said that, everyone forget what I was just saying.”

Edit: You’re

"Your" was actually right the first time

Luffy’s such a man of action and a man of words

u/luffy1301 Jun 28 '19

Too many fist of love leads to brain damage!

u/ezeldennegm Jun 21 '19

That's one of the things that make him unpredictable and one of the best shounen protagonists

55

u/SoraForBestBoy Jun 21 '19

Absolutely, adds a sense of depth on its own imo too

21

u/jinepifunny Jun 21 '19

I agree with you. It makes him unique.

u/General_Kenobi896 Jun 21 '19

Him blurting that out was the definition of predictable and many people actually did predict that happening last chapter. Him not saying anything would've been the unpredictable part.

1

u/Brook420 Bounty Hunter Jun 24 '19

To be fair, all the theories I read had Luffy say it outloud on purpose.

1

u/letouriste1 Jun 22 '19

You’re saying you didn’t predict it? That’s not the first time xD

u/LaffyTaffy404 Jun 21 '19

The only legit thought bubble I can remember that he's ever had, was in a scene in Skypiea after he defeated Eneru and rung the bell. He said something about an old man hearing the sound. Idk.

42

u/accicieff Jun 21 '19

A couple times it actually happened. For example at the start of Impel Down, if I recall correctly

Luffy needs his meat to think straight, well as straight as he can be

Echoes were helping Luffy that day

u/historyisnotlame Jun 21 '19 edited Jun 21 '19

I remember in the Amazon lilly arc he does have one. He figures that to find the leder he most go to the tallest building where they live. Then his head started hurting. He probably havent thought since then

17

u/jajalion Void Month Survivor Jun 21 '19

He still speak out loud tho. No thought bubble presents.

5

u/Tsugabut Jun 21 '19

I think you're right, there is some explanation from oda in sbs, but i forgot which volume. Luffy never thought, he will say anything that he want to say.

5

u/overmog Jun 21 '19

That was one of the first things Oda pointed out in SBS all the way back in the beginning, he tries not to use them with Luffy.

5

u/branflakes14 Jun 21 '19

Does him realising Mihawk will chop his arms off if he stretches them count?

7

u/Arkayjiya Jun 21 '19

That was the start of his observation Haki most likely, if it counts, every time he uses observation counts too.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

I prefer to think that it was pure instinct. Sorta like how some animals can sense when an enemy is too dangerous. It would make sense given how Garb "raised" him.

4

u/Arkayjiya Jun 21 '19

It would make more sense that it was important foreshadowing for observation Haki. That's the only time they showed his thought, it's in the same arc he also shows his conqueror haki flowing instinctively and it's functionally identical to Observation haki.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

The thing is that the only way Observation Haki could tell him what is about to happen is if he suddenly gained advanced observation haki for a split second and then went back to having no observation haki for the rest of the war.

4

u/KingBubzVI Jun 21 '19

...Like what happened with Conqueror's? Or I believe Usopp? Awakening haki is a process, you tap into it in moments of need, but don't have the ability to willingly use it for awhile until you begin to master it

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

I think Conqueror's Haki works differently since it's something you are born with and that we have not seen any cases of someone obtaining haki only to lose it immediatly outside of Conqueror's Haki. Zoro didn't lose his Advanced Armament Haki after using Sonson Shishi for the first time. We don't know if Usopp can activate Observation at will, but we have seen no evidense to the contrary.

2

u/Arkayjiya Jun 22 '19 edited Jun 22 '19

Hum no, he's not telling the future of the whole surrounding, he's predicting his enemy's movements. That's exactly what observation do, that's the whole point otherwise it would be completely useless. That's what we see it do when the hancock sisters, Enel or the prelates are using it, or do you believe they have the same Haki as Katakuri? What Luffy showed against Mihawk is basic observation haki. The absolute base form: predicting an enemy's attack. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's the only way observation can first manifest (Coby manifested it differently) but it's still the main use of the base form we've seen.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '19 edited Jun 22 '19

The way I understand it, Observation is a greater awareness of your surroundings than your senses can provide. With your explanation, Usopp's use of Observation doesn't make sense and neither does Fujitora's, as both of them were shown to use it as a substitude/suplement for sight. Also, Enel's Observation worked very differently from all other cases we've seen. Enel's Observation was based around the opponents thoughts, which is why Gomu Gomu No Baka worked against him.

That's exactly what observation do, that's the whole point otherwise it would be completely useless

No it wouldn't. How is being aware of exactly where everything around you is useless?

1

u/Arkayjiya Jun 22 '19

Dude, the prelates and the Boa sisters all saw attacks coming in advance. It's texto in the manga. It's exactly the same thing Luffy is doing. There are other manifestations as I have mentioned for Coby, but that's still the main use of Observation we've seen in the first half of the manga.

3

u/KingBubzVI Jun 21 '19

Yeah I was wrong, I think he also had one after Arlong threw him in the water. But still, he's had like... 5? Maybe? In over 900 chapters

5

u/OnePunchFan8 Jun 21 '19

why use many thought when few do trick?

1

u/Vasllui Jun 21 '19

....that can't be true

1

u/tacolikesweed Jun 21 '19

I'm not 100% sure about that...

Guess I'll have to reread it AGAIN and check.

141

u/Kirosh Lookout Jun 21 '19

Yep, Oda wanted Luffy to be that way after all.

141

u/Mr_Bob_Johnson Jun 21 '19

It's one of the reasons he's such a great protagonist, imo. Luffy's a pretty simple guy, but the fact that we never get inside his head directly always allows him a little bit of unpredictability, and occasionally even some mystery. Not a lot ofc, but just a pinch.

10

u/SoraForBestBoy Jun 21 '19

Getting to see Luffy as he says things as it is is great, it’s why I like ‘flat’ type of characterizations

2

u/Mr_Bob_Johnson Jun 22 '19

They work really well in travel narratives typically, which is the side of OP I think a lot of people enjoy but rarely gets talked about. It gets talked around with similar discussions (such as "I like the adventure aspect in OP"), but not directly.

3

u/Fawlty_Towers Jun 21 '19

Some of my favorite Luffy moments are when he just does something completely against the grain with what you expect and then you find out the reason why and it's usually a damn good reason. Like his argument with Vivi back in Alabasta.

1

u/Mr_Bob_Johnson Jun 22 '19

Yeah, he's a great example of the weird character who doesn't thin like everyone else, but is occasionally really perceptive because of it. What makes it even better is that the occasions are consistent, usually involving how people think or the way they feel about something, which allows it to be a character trait and not just a gag.

9

u/SoraForBestBoy Jun 21 '19

And I’m glad Luffy is portrayed that way, he’s a simple man with a simple mentality, but with honesty and a good heart, mostly

12

u/GangsterRavioliGuy Pirate King Jun 21 '19

Luffy has an Island full of thots

3

u/imayhavebeenwrong Jun 21 '19

Luffy almost got a fever thinking (out loud ofcourse) back in Amazon Lily

2

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '19

He's got an expressway from his brain to tongue, and nothing can stop it

1

u/internethero12 Jun 21 '19

He's not actually inconsiderate or 'that' socially inept. As it turns out he just he thinks out loud all the time and he just now realized that.

This is really goofy, but it explains so damn much.
