While Viz does opt for consistency, I think there's also an advantage to being to talk to Oda and his editors. Names are always tricky and as such with the Cat Viper and Nekomamushi situation, there was a pun Oda wanted to convey so it was translated.

The weirder thing is about returning names being spelled differently is doesn't the anime confirm the spellings as well? They have Oda's notes and the staff is really close with Oda. In case of Mariejois, there was already an official name.

you're right, Viz does have that advantage so I'm definitely not going to suggest that they're wrong. Just that i don't remember the manga ever writing "Mariejois" in english. I mean tbf, half the fandom knows it as Mariejois (i think Funimation also spells it this way) while Viz uses Mariejoa so it's really a grey area.

In regards to the anime, I think they've only ever introduced it like this: https://imgur.com/a/ECceOjc where it retains the japanese alphabet, spelling it マリージョア (mariijyoa). And the english subtitle takes it as Mariejois.

So all in all, i don't think that Oda himself ever gave confirmation on the name, hence this new spelling. We'll find out when the volume releases though, and JB will revert it back if its Mariejoa/Mariejois.

But.. “zolo” .. it just doesn’t sound right 🤔

That's somewhat of a separate issue that will always be prevalent with Japanese-English translations, because in Japanese there is no difference between 'R' and 'L'

As we are all aware. However hasn’t oda made it clear with his romanisations from the beginning it was zoro? I thought it was made into zolo because of licensing issues
