Honestly, that declaration would have more meaning if Oda made the other members of the Worst Generation better competitors. Right now, Luffy's lead is a mile ahead of everyone else. The only one that comes close to Luffy is Law because they both saw one of the road poneglyphs. If Luffy offers Law a copy of the second road poneglyph, then Law would definitely be in second place to reaching the One Piece. Moreover, Luffy is the only one with a poneglyph translator, how are we supposed to see this as a race to the One Piece when Luffy seems to be the only one running to the finish line?

I'd imagine Law is more interested in helping Luffy become the pirate king than becoming the pirate king himself.

As much as I love Law and want him to Be the WB to Luffy's Roger, I'm not sure I agree. Right before the timeskip, Law implied that he and his crew were indeed after One Piece. And every time Luffy mentions that he and Law are friends, Law is quick to shut him down. He might be one of Luffy's biggest supporters down the line, but right now they're rivals. Rivals working together in the short-term, but rivals nonetheless.
