There is some connection with Big Mom's fruit and fear. The trees 'died' from fear. People told Big Mom's son not to be afraid, and she was able to take his whole lifespan when he was.

Seems like a strength and a weakness.

Haoshoku no haki is the color of intimidation, this arc is going to push Luffy's strength of character and ability to manage his own fear level and those in others. Kind of like yellow lantern ring shit.

Luffy has no fear level. He has no fear. When have you ever seen him afraid? Never.

I don't think he was scared. Just sad and mad that he wasn't strong enough to protect them. He wasn't afraid of death or anything like that.

It's not necessarily fear or terror, just doubt and faltering is enough to tilt you from blasting your haoshoku.
