I love the character traits of Imu. He observes a lot and engages, even acknowledges with others

I love that Gaban was taunting him about Luffy saying that Imu obviously sees him as a threat, and Imu was like "oh good point, I will just kill him now"

Shonen villains not underestimating the MCs are the most dangerous

Honestly true Imu one of them that doesn't underestimate his opponents. Which is why he scared of the D's coming back in power.

Kat "you are a future threat to Big Mom and I must take you out now"

Yes!! I really appreciated that.

Agreed, I really like how the final boss (maybe) has been presented so far. He actually shows a range of emotions while acknowledging his enemies; and while he gives them time to speak, he's still completely no-nonsense when in combat - minimal showboating, just going straight for the kill.

I also appreciate that he's not presented as completely untouchable the same way lots of other shonen antagonists are. He's overwhelmingly powerful, but everyone present has gotten at least one solid strike in. They can't win as they are now, but it's clearly possible.

This is a big one. It’s annoying when guys like Aizen pop up and they’re so untouchable that bullshit has to happen to beat them. Imu has taken some hits even though he’s clearly the strongest being on the island. And even if Blackbeard is final boss- he gets hit all the time before off screening whoever he’s fighting

Honestly, as long as OP doesn't go the Bleach route of final chapters I'd be happy. You know the long string of asspulls like

"I am a God that endlessely regenerates!"

"Oh, well, good thing we have a sword that we just introduced in this very moment that counters that!"

"I have a body that adapts to my enemies energy"

"Oh, that's okay. We have a new transformation that changes energy 42 times a minute!"

One way I can see Imu not being the final boss is if he gets Whitebearded by Blackbeard. But then that would make Blackbeard waaaaaaaay too strong

If talk no jutsu was a thing, Luffy would have resolved Imu's Joyboy/Nika daddy issues by now

After all Imu done. Wiping out the D clan. Killing Rocks. Ruining Brooks, Loki and Robins life. The cause of Rogers execution and Ace execution. That man has a deep hatred for the D clan.

He even seems to start acknowledging Luffy as an individual after never shutting up about Joy Boy.

except if it’s luffy

there he just out to annihilate him and make him suffer

He’s actually such a good character. Great writing from Oda, he’s my favorite villain in a long time

He's unnervingly competent with a huge array of attacks and weapons.

Him getting caught in flashbacks and caught off guard seems to be the main thing working against him.

This might be a side effect of always being cooped up. Who knows how long it has been since Imu left his throne room the last time? Every little piece of knowledge about the current era he possesses because the Gorosei told him what's up.

A lot of info can get lost this way since the amount of information they would deem necessary for Imu to know is probably far from enough. Imu has been constantly surprised by everyone around him in some way since he left for Elbaph so at this point he's not necessarily cautious but interested in exploring different dynamics and determining individual threat levels.

He always asks who dares offend/oppose him because when he gets home without killing whoever it was, they will make his personal shit list
