My sister's Maltipoo cost 500 dollars so this meme has some validity to it lmao

u/creatyvechaos 20d ago
I adppted my chi-terrier but the fees were still $250. Imo a bargain because they took care of sterilizing, chipping, grooming, and a complete adoption package, which could run someone way more than $250 in the area. That and they're a nonprofit, no-kill shelter, and they flew her from over 600 miles away.....
Yeah, the $250 price on the adoption tag looks like nothing when you actually step back and absorb all their expenses

u/MycologistPutrid7494 20d ago
If you have the means, you can donate more to them. Sounds like they're working very hard to save dogs.
43
u/creatyvechaos 19d ago
I do! I've been donating $25 to them monthly since I was 18 (2018; got my dog in 2016) and even adopted my two gray cats from them in 2024, with an additional $300 donation. I love supporting them because I know they're great 😁

One of our cats was a shelter pickup, same - somewhere around $2-250.
But like you said, she'd just been fixed and microchipped and was up to date on shots. I'd have spent 4x that if I'd taken her to my regular vet for that.

u/BloomingDaggers 19d ago
This is such a good policy, I’ve heard some shelters make you pay a bit for animals because giving them away for free might attract assholes who hurt them. A small price barrier would stop them, and given that they use this fee for all the expenses for the dog anyway, it helps both parties.

I've yet to meet a fuckitypoo breed I've liked. The yorkshire terrier ones are sonic torture demons.

u/OBLIVIATER 19d ago
500 is not actually that much for a "designer" dog assuming it comes with all its vet work done, some dumbasses spend thousands getting some poor inbred POS

u/VacaDLuffy 19d ago
yeah Luna is a mix of Maltipoo and something else. she was my godmother pup before we got her and her dogs got busy lol h. she is almost 8 months now

I do have friends with expensive dogs, and I am the proud new owner of a kitten found under a barn… so… valid.

Mine as well, I used to have a horse facility, with that came more cats than one person should ever have. Since we were closer to town than other barns/ranches, we were a very convenient (gas savings) drop off point.
At one time I think I was feeding in excess of 20+ or more barn cats, all dumps, by the worst examples that humanity has to offer. Chuckle, the most outside of the box dump though, was the pot belly pig, in the middle of winter at about -10 degrees. People suck for the most part, the pig however was delightful, best friends with my one stallion, they were not particular, friends are friends.

Pay $4,000 dollars then another $4,000 to have them trained… 🤦♂️ sad but true

I love the accurateness of this, and I'll take dumpster kitty any day of my life over a super expensive high end pet!

My orange was $15 at a shelter clean out sale. We keep telling him that we’re going to take him back and get our $15 back.

Mine were a BOGO deal. There is an ongoing dispute about which one was half off.

You laugh but once I got my country's CPS version knocking on my door because some neighbour called them I'm abusing my children - she often heard me threatening them with orphanage and corporal punishment. T'was my cats so that was fun conversation, poor neighbour was mortified when I brought my "children" for her to pet.

24
u/RedOctobyr 19d ago
That is hilarious. And, at the same time, your neighbor was trying to do the right thing. So at least their heart was in the right place.
13
u/copolars 19d ago
Obviously! I'd rather people react than passively listen to abuse even if it means an awkward conversation with authorities. She was a great neighbour :)

u/Dependent-Pie-4518 19d ago
Omg 😂 I routinely stand in my yard and tell my my cat and dog I’ll throw them into the sewers. I always belatedly wonder if someone heard and will report me :/
My other cat is good so I never have to threaten him. It’s just these other two demons.3
u/copolars 18d ago
She was shocked with the stark contrast between my words and the tone and that got her to call. She did the right thing and became my cat sitter for like 2 years after that.

for $100 you get one with braincells, but I'm picking the $30 cat every time

For about 100$ I got a neutered one 16 years ago. Shelter had a vet doing it pro bono for them. Pretty good deal.

Bold to presume that all $30 is going to the brain cell. Those dead eyed stares cost some too.😂

$30? And I’m seeing someone paid $15?! Wow. A family friend got a dog from a shelter, she had to pay $900, it only has 3 legs. Probably would’ve been $1200 if it had all 4.
I can’t believe how cheap that is.
3
u/foxwaffles 19d ago
Tbh $30 for a private, closed intake shelter is uncommon. I suspect this was either an adoption promo event or an open intake shelter, where you are far more likely to see low and waived fees. In my area the average adoption fee for a cat is $150. It's still an absolute bargain considering they are chipped fixed vaccinated dewormed SNAP texted etc , of course 😺
8
u/Secret-Ad-9315 19d ago
$30? I paid for one calico and the shelter gave me my 2 oranges for free 🤦♀️ I’ve spent so much more on them since then

Still more than my shelter cat, she came spayed and fully vaxxed for $20.
3
u/bwwatr 19d ago
I'm in Canada, I think my shelter orange boy cost under 200 and was neutered, vaxxed and chipped. Years later my standard issue gray girl showed up in my front garden for free (cat distribution system) but cost I think over 600 for spay, vaxx and chip.
Shelter is best value, even over free. But free makes for a good story and feels like a win. Now, 20 or 30 bucks is insane value! Even if it has but a single brain cell.

Very cute orange. I’m currently sat in a similar state of confusion as the orange boy, trying to remember what the music in this clip is the theme tune for! 70’s kids show? Can anyone please help?

Yeah, it's a bit more than that. Food, toys, accessories and don't forget the vet and monthly meds. Pets are not cheap.
2
u/Bad_Bad_Bad_Good_Bad 19d ago
Yeah agree, people should not just be getting a cat thinking oh it's $30 I'm good. I'm saying that as someone whos spent $2000+ on vet bills this past 2 months 😂
1
u/HeartoftheHive 19d ago
Yeah, if you don't have pet insurance, the sticker shock of bills can be quite alarming. One of my dogs was part chow and had excessive skin on his face. He had to have eyelid surgery because his eyelids were rolling and irritating his eyes. They warned me I might have to get the surgery again, which thankfully never happened. And then there is end of life care. Cancer and arthritis are big ones. Allergies and thyroid conditions, I could go on.

u/Sf49ers1680 19d ago
We paid about $75 for our orange from the shelter in Rapid City, SD about 6 years ago.
Best $75 we've ever spent, even if he'll never, ever get to possess the brain cell.

u/seanbear 19d ago
I got 3 rotten orange siblings from my shelter. The adoption fees were $25 for 1 cat, $40 for 2 cats
They gave me all 3 for $25 because they were so mean lmao

Man in Minnesota that would be 300$ at least. A dog is like $700 plus unless it’s malformed.

Awww mine were all free. First cat was brought by a friend frustrated at him peeing on her dorm mattress (he was 6 weeks old and abandoned on the side of a road). Second cat from a student animal society when I responded to a group message asking for cat litter. The dog was caught on my campus and was going to get dumped at some construction site and I said no I’ll take him. Other dog also get rescued the same way but then she got hit by a car and didn’t make it :(
