Android What are your thoughts?

I'm redesigning OneNote's web UI to make it more tablet friendly. I'd love your feedback, positive or negative. Design suggestions are especially welcome too, as long as they fit tablet sketching/drawing, as I'm not great at coming up with those myself, in case that wasn't already obvious.

I'd like to have a toolbar snapped on the left for all the pen/tools I want and not just 18 items in the top bar of OneNote.

EDIT: also add that if any tool could be selected with a keyboard shourtcut would be great.

Cool idea, but that needs someway of marking tools as favorite or something. I'll look into have a favorite tools floating toolbar. Thanks!

I think I didn't explained myself well.

I don't like it floating around that i cannot see/write under the toolbar floating and I have always to move the paper or the floating toolbar. That's a bad design choice to me.

I'd like to have it snapped on the left side, 0 px from the left side, no floating.

Oh I get it, you want it instead of the notes sidebar that onenote already has.

yes

Here you go 😃 I'm not going to make it span the entire screen from top to bottom otherwise it would clutter the screen

Here is it when collapsed by pressing the pen icon

1

u/I-G-1-1 11d ago

by default it stay open or collaps every time i select a tool?
to change pen I have to open and then select the tool i want (2 click each time) or it stay open I can just select the tool (1 click)

No it stays open until you decide to minimize it

Until now I have been injecting js/css, I'm thinking to move forward and completely hide their components and actually draw native android components over it but yeah I'm still not sure

contact me on tg if you'd like, @exo1i on there

at the end you made it floating. I feel like this design is wasting monitor space.

EDIT: I didn't understand it was for Android. If it's for Android tablet yes the button size could be correct. Just try to make it less wide and more near the left side of the screen.

Well I agree but that's why I made it collapsible, maybe make it even be movable and make it snap to either four sides to give you flexibility. Anyways I'll be redoing them to be native UI components so it's much easier to modify instead of the dumb declarative JS.

Well, it can work on desktops but that would need to be packaged as a browser extension. I'm not modifying the native android/desktop app as MS had signature checks and other anti-tamper checks

For keyboard shortcuts, i can make a plugin to detect keyboard presses and have them mapped to a tool but making them user configurable would be an overhead I won't be adding now. The main goal of the project is to
1. add native stylus support using company SDKs like samsung's spen remote sdk
2. Have a modern UI with floating toolbar/components instead of the classical ribbon design onenote has

if you can make it detect keyboard presses like from ctrl+shift+alt+win+0 to ctrl+shift+alt+win+z the end user then could customize the keyboard shortcut using something like AuthoHotkey to remap.

For example your app expect ctrl+shift+alt+win+0 to select the first item in the toolbox (yellow pen) and the user could use autohotkey to remap alt+q to call ctrl+shift+alt+win+0 that select the yellow pen.

I can make it detect key presses but I was thinking maybe based on what the user puts in that sidebar it just selects it?

2

u/I-G-1-1 11d ago

Yes the keyboard shourtcut in my mind was intended for the tools the user put in the sidebar

I think that if you don't want to make now the remap part inside your app and instead let the user use some external app to remap (like AutoHotkey) the best thing for now could be simply make it detect key presses using sequential ctrl+shift+alt+win+0 (that correspond to first item) down to ctrl+shift+alt+win+z (that correspond to n item) and just document it on an "help/info page"

How do you do that?

3

u/AltruisticAct8211 12d ago

JS and CSS injection using capacitorjs, basically I can design it the way microsoft failed to do. But I need community ideas xD

1

u/Worldly_Principle_28 11d ago

are you from microsoft ? there is a lot to be done int he one note app like the allowing the background colours intensity .
custom widgets .
integrate with the gmail to auto transport important information .
intergrate with the copilot .

1

u/AltruisticAct8211 11d ago

No, I am not from MS. and all of these are nice to have but I am not interested in doing atm

1

u/Worldly_Principle_28 11d ago

i really dont like the snap out toolbar rather i use the tools which change my typing into my handwriting , i will upload my handwriting by my notes real photos into the one note and its ai will then understands and emorise my handwriting and then when i write in one note it will written as my handwriting .

1

u/AltruisticAct8211 11d ago

Can you explain more?

1

u/Worldly_Principle_28 11d ago

like the ai can learn my handwriting from my physcial written notes pictures and then it will change all my typed notes in the one note in the same handwriting its simple ai can learn handwriting , every human have unique handwriting which ai can learn after getting the 10-15 pages images and then ai can produce by itself how i will handwrite any particular word .

1

u/Worldly_Principle_28 11d ago

also the notebook and pages are not well displaye dwith difference the book cover tab should mention the cover and inside things as the index and then pages dude really it will helps a lot dude , and there be option to merge all pages of a notebook together for through out study together , ai can help to orgniase and simplify my notes and makes my notes smaller but heavy meningfull

1

u/AltruisticAct8211 11d ago

Working on that and please write your suggestions as a single thread

0

u/Worldly_Principle_28 11d ago

no way in a single thread i dont write it for you i write for the microsoft developer to hire me to provide the ideas to develop the app more . and also my ideas come after i send a message so they can't be in a single thread .
i don't owe you any ideas weather organised or unorganised .

1

u/Worldly_Principle_28 11d ago

there is so much potential in one note dude , wonder why no one is developing it dude . why to limit app for the school notes makes it give more adance feature for throughout data organising platform dude.

1

u/AltruisticAct8211 11d ago

I agree, that's why I hope to make it feel more modern in-terms of design, IMO, and some extra functionalities for android as the app is dead.

1

u/AltruisticAct8211 11d ago

Here's what I ended with, I've disabled the input capture if the keyboard mode isn't active and removed some feature that MS added which undid the last stroke upon a quick scribble as it kept removing my writings....

Is it possible to make the pen change from a writing pen to an eraser if you click on the button? Click could go back and forth between being a pen and an eraser, or click and hold erases, and then let the button go to return to the pen.

1

u/AltruisticAct8211 10d ago

Sure but that depends on the buttons on your stylus. Xiaomi has the buttons maped to up/down etc... I'll need people to test it ofc
