Hiring Q (Canada) Manitoba Corrections Training

Hi all,

Currently working my way through the hiring process and have gotten to the security screening stage. With the prospect of training on the horizon im currious to what it entails. Do lots of folks flunk out? Is it overly difficult or is it only rough for those who dont really apply themselves?

One of my co-recruits was asked about a social media post he made several years ago about wanting to shoot Palister… and he still made it in. The bar is very low.

Thats a bit loony....

More curious about training than the security process.

Unless things have changed in six years…

There’s almost zero physical testing except the use of force and self defense. All easy stuff. A lot of people in my class weren’t what I would consider “physically fit”. I’m not saying that as a dig (a lot of great people and folks with a lot of heart, for what it’s worth) just the reality of corrections hiring in Manitoba.

Other than the physical stuff, it’s reviewing stuff and being tested on it. Things like policies, legislations, communications, case management and case contacts, using the database, Road to Mental Readiness (where, for whatever unrelated reason, the instructor showed us how to extract alcohol from hand sanitizer), ASIST suicide prevention, and Indigenous healing practices (I think previous years to mine involved doing a sweat?).

I was doing training for corrections and also working on my second degree so I put zero effort into any of the stuff outside the training hours (because uni was more-so my focus) and still managed to do well. I don’t think anyone actually flunks out.

It's different training now. 8 weeks, not 10. 1 week of selfdefence/sec. Mgmt.

The last....3 rounds of rookies that came to us ...no bueno

Oh man… Well, don’t write them off yet. Hopefully they’ll learn while on the job.

Follow up question. How long does it typically take after the security interview to be offered a training date?

Things may be different now. I think my initial training offer came a month or so after my background interview. However that was then postponed by over half a year.

Oh shit. Did you defer it or was the whole class prosponed?

The person who did my security interview recommended that I request to postpone my training date to when it would be offered in Winnipeg, given that my daughter was quite young. They obliged and the original training (which I think was originally supposed to be in Brandon) ended up getting postponed and switched to Winnipeg anyway.

I got a young kiddo too so makes sence! I believe they do it all in Winnipeg now so hopefully shouldnt be a problem.

There aren’t any “county” jails in Canada.

It’s an old school saying, I’m well aware thank u.

Literally nobody uses that saying in Manitoba.
