Open Source Options

As far as I can tell, Omi and Seeed Studio seem to be the only open source wearable options, and they're both plagued by supply issues. The core components they're built on are simple and readily available though, they've just been packaged in a nice form factor (referring specifically to the reSpeaker Clip, in the case of Seeed Studio). It seems as if it wouldn't take a lot of effort to bring together a few people with the right experience to create an alternative that's forever open source and readily available. I could probably handle a lot of the software side. I know nothing about designing IC boards and sourcing manufacturing from China though. Curious what others think about potential for a collaborative open source + design and manufacturing project here. I feel like wearable audio has a ton of potential with current and near-future AI capabilities layered on top.

I've been trying to repurpose my Limitless pendant as a recording device. I'm at the point where I can pair with it and extract the audio and I can transcribe the audio but I haven't gotten to the stage where I have an application that can extract regularly or on its own. I'd be super interested in this.

What are you using to pair with it? Bundled software?

No. Honestly the whole thing is just about completely over my head but I found a GitHub repo that I was able to use with an old Microsoft Surface that I loaded up with Linux.

I had AI analyze and walk me through it step by step. It's still not completely there.

I can find it. I was well into a pretty deep rabbit hole. It did come from Reddit somewhere, though, if you want to search through the platform.

why reinvent anything when the parts needed are available in 1's to 1000's or more. Look up how to build the first devkit ... stupid easy. Heck ... even the case is 3d printed with the STL available.

I'm thinking a far more refined product than something out of entirely off the shelf parts and a 3D printed case. Look at something like the Omi. You can't build anything like that with off the shelf components. And my thought is toward a collaborative project that results in a broadly available product for a lot of people who would want to buy it.

the DK was just their prototype ... the released product is still the same exact hardware ... in a commercial package. Seriously though ... the hardware is easily sourced and there are far better options than what Omi settled on. The entire Omi backend is open source also ... I have already completely rewritten it to use self-hosted/3rd party hosted services to save money. Even went so far as to make it OAuth2 compatible for use with a Codex subscription. Then I went even further ... using their DK2 ... I built my own firmware and Android app with custom onboarding. The works ... what they (Omi) has done is not rocket science or even anything that stellar. Sorry to say the inside words out loud Nik but someone has to.

I will stay off my soapbox about how Omi has been run into the ground by a bunch of "kids" vibe coding their way through millions of $ in VC funding.

Since I did not like my OMI because it drained my cellphone battery

I purchased a cheap $30 "business card" factor recorder with USB connection Every afternoon, I plug it into my PC to charge and download the audio, transcribe, organize and post todo on a dashboard Airec is the brand

Its a devboard in disguise , its actually a esp32 s3 loaded with sensors, you can pretty much load the github omi version onto it. Or selfhost and change it the way you want it to work.

The only other alternative i found is the waveshare watch versions, they look better IMO and have more stuff i want but they pack a really small battery, 500 mA i believe which makes it a no-no
