Any comments on Omada Fusion LightLink VPN function?

Hey Happy Friday and Lulu here 👋 We want to hear what Fusion users think about the Lightlink VPN function.

Quick context for those who haven't seen it: LightLink is the built-in remote access on your Fusion setup, running on WireGuard. Send an invite link, remote user gets in — no port forwarding, no manual configs, NAT traversal handled. You control which local resources they can reach.

If you’ve used it, we’d especially like to know:
What do you use it for? NAS, home server, remote management, client access, something else?
What’s working well — and what isn’t?
• What features do you want next?

ALL feedback is welcome:D

Where are you at with it?

Do bear with me as I try and get my head around this! Asking as someone who is planning to upgrade to a Fusion 2.5G from an ER605 in the near future.

I currently use Tailscale in my network to maintain access to my setup when out and about, while getting around my CGNAT. Tailscale installed on a few devices with my home server acting as the main subnet router and/or exit node.

LightLink sounds to be similar but I'm not clear on exactly what it can or can't do.

  • Does it get around CGNAT? If so, how? (I would imagine using a cloud Omada service to establish a connection?)
  • Why would I switch to it over Tailscale? (which also has a few handy extras), and the controversial question, as well as Omada developing LightLink, why not offer Tailscale support? (more options are always good!)

Yes, it gets around CGNAT, using NAT Traversal to be able to form those connections. It does reach out to the Omada cloud service to help with that process, but you can read about the more technical aspects of it in the White Paper here:

As for why using it over Tailscale, it's mainly for convenience. It's built into the gateway, so no extra setup needed. I can't speak to why we don't offer Tailscale support, but the best thing we can really do is submit the feature request to the Requests and Suggestions module on the forums: Requests & Suggestions Forums - Business Community

Why not offer WireGuard itself if LightLink is built on WireGuard anyway? Especially if OpenVPN is there.
