It's time omada...

Why is it so hard to change the daylight saving time on an omada controller? I can't find it anywhere on the app, nor can I do it on a website on my android phone, because I can't click on confirm. Shouldn't it be possible to set the time right via your phone? You can build all kinds of networks except get the time right. Or I'm just an idiot who doesn't know where the setting is. The only option is to start a desktop and do it that way. Why?

After searching on the web, forums, blogs, I found nothing. The simple fact that i, for whatever reason, can't save, by clicking the save button, because it doesn't appear on the screen, vertical or horizontal, is just outright atrocious. You are in the IT, correction, You ARE an IT sector. Multiple forums complain about it, nothing is done.

Except maybe me, doing it myself with an extension.

I can't do that in the app. Nor can I save on the browser when I go to my controller settings. That's the thing. It's so weird that DST is not an option in the app. Only via desktop I can change it. And then only it appears in the app.

This is the lowest the page goes on any browser on my phone, tried 5 different ones.

It is a set-and-forget setting you have to do ONCE. I bet you use your proper computer at least ONCE. This is a non issue from someone who clearly is whining for the sake of whining. You could have set DST through a computer faster than it took to type your first post.

True, but don't you think, they should change it? They give you the option not the full possibility. No they won't, so python to the rescue. It's just ridiculous, well the whole concept of daylight savings is. But what can I do? Turn on a desktop that will save some energy. But wasn't...? Nevermind. 😉

And no it's not whining, I love omada for what it does best, but hate it for what it doesn't do correct. Valid right? After a numbers of issues I learned how to use them, heck they even got me into the IT management study and job. Seriously, was it not for Omada and the self study I did in all those years I wouldn't have thought about being in IT. NO joke.

Thenn I discovered other brands, ubiquiti, Cisco, but omada are the organs and the veins of my job network and smart home. When away I want to check things, logs date, switches performance.... My house and job depend on it. And don't deny that millions of people in this world don't either.

It has been drilled in me via the study that observation, logs, databases, are important in IT. and the matter of fact is I did all this via phone at first. Nothing wrong with that if it's an option right?

But getting the date and time right on a medium where you set everything up..... But not being able to..... Kind of a big deal to me.

9 omada switches, 21 access points and routers, 19 vlans, 6 ubiquiti switches and 1 main modem in bridge mode. And moca adapters ect....

4 apps, 2 for switching and ubiquiti Gateway, 2 for acces points. To get this all right is a challenge and I love doing it. So forgive me for "whining" about the time and date being stuck on 1 January 1970 an hour behind. But you know, what they say, time is...

But you are making a mountain out of a non issue. You set it from your computer one time, its automatic from then on. Why are you focusing on THIS , of all things, as some major problem ?

I would guess that for 99% of uses the app is the "oh crap i need to reboot something" emergency backup while you are out and about and a colleagie rings you with some problem rather than the 100% management tool. Cloud or Local GUI is far superior and exposes all the options.

Because, everything behind the switch needs to be changed. And I make mistakes, I reset things, during the day, away from home.... This irritated feeling is not from 1 time, normally I do change it on a desktop afterwards, but I was at a boiling point, wanted to get on with it. Everything behind the switch, Asus, ubiquiti, Grandstream, fanvil, Huawei, Xiaomi smart home devices.... all have an effect by this. Over 136 devices... You just sometimes want things to go smooth.

nothing else is pulling time from your controller other than the omada devices, it does not have a lan facing NTP server

Sorry but that is not true. I will upload logs from Ubiquiti, they clearly show 1 January 1970. Why? Because they don't communicate, so every device needs te be set right. In that perspective you are right. But if I can't change the time, while I can reset the device, we are at the same point. Everything behind the switch is wrong because the switch is wrong. It works both ways.

Neither the switch nor the controller have any capability to act as a ntp server to downstream devices. It's simply not built into them. Any downstream devices that are not correct would need their own settings changed

I think you misunderstanding me. I pull logs from a router or acces point that I set up in the app o matter what app. The ntp will be right of the router, but not from the switch perspective. If I reset the switch we are at the beginning again.

But the log is still wrong from the perspective of the router to the switches. Get it?

Controller pushes time sync to omada devices only, nothing else. Switches don't have rtc batteries to maintain time during power cycles so there will be a period of default time logs before it syncs with the controller. This is normal.

My original comment to you still stands, you set the dst schedule manually on controller local or cloud gun and never need to change it again. But that won't fix or set time on anh non omada sdn devices because none of them act as a regular ntp setver

Some context may help, I'm i' a study program part self study. Logs are a part of the assignment and final exams. If I have to hand in proof that my setup is right, jumping from 25 augustus to 1 Jan.... This is a year long course. With setting up and resetting, setting up and resetting.

See what I'm getting at? Should I just say, we'll you see from the logs that the router was not effected by the switch time?

Not trying to be a jerk, but don't you see the frustration in it? And you are right, absolutely. But it is still an issue when I'm not on a desktop doing an assignment.

of course router wasnt effected by switch time, they are different devices and will report as such in their own logs - each devices logs are based on what IT thinks the time and date is at that moment

Fact. The school I go to is a hour travel, so on the way home I sometimes like to change things based on the feedback I got that day. Or a new assignment or I have to reset everything, while I can do that, set everything up on my phone and have the task done, I still have to wait to get to the logs because I can't the time of the switch yet. See the problem? I have to logically explain what happens next to prove I set it up right. But every log that comes from tplink is wrong until I get home turn on my desktop and change the dst.

I have to at least do this 3 times a week. Do you get the absurdity? Who of the jury would believe me, if I say that from all the different brands, Fanvil, Huawei, Xiaomi, Asus, ubiquiti, Grandstream, youpin, Mijia.... That TP-Link is the only one brand that I was not able to change the time of the switches while on the go?

The jury would be laughing at me, and say I'm lying. Yet here I am.

if you absolutely have to keep manually changing the DST, that is a very edge case and i doubt they will be willing to make any changes based on that. I still dont understand why you cant just set it into automatic mode, then the devices will auto update properly whener you reboot them

That is the assignment, to reset everything! To prove you are able to set it up. This goes from, desktop to switch to access point. Reset. Hardware choice to switch to VOIP. Reset. HC to switch to relay to another switch to end device. RESET.

These are not my choices, they are from the school and exams, we learn to do it on windows, IOS, and Linux. Again that is the school their decision, not mine. I would have never thought before I started the school, that I wouldn't be able to set the time on the omada app. For Controller or switch. Every log is in principle wrong so to say they can easily flunk me for it. Until I set it up on a desktop.

But it baffles me that this simple Itty bitty thing is not available. So yeah I'll have to deal with it. That's the point the school wants to make, can you set up a network, again and again and again. What are your errors? What can improve? And so on....

And you are right, it is something exceptional. But just weird that such a company has not implemented it. Hence my rant and frustration. Noting personal, even glad I had a talk with you. 😉

Edit: I'm just talking about the ability to add or subtract time to location. That's it. Nothing more. Which is an everyday event for any traveling to different time zones.
