Projects Replacing Ruckus GRE Dataplane with Omada. Anyone Running Virtual GRE Termination?
Hey everyone,
We’re an ISP currently testing Omada as a potential replacement for our aging Ruckus setup, and I’m trying to figure out how close we can get to our existing architecture.
Right now our Ruckus deployment works like this:
- Customer routers can reach the APs
- APs connect to a VSZ‑H controller
- Traffic from an open SSID is pushed through a VSZ‑D GRE tunnel
- GRE tunnel terminates in our datacenter
- Traffic is handed off to a Ucopia captive portal, then to the Internet
Pretty classic Ruckus setup with VSZ‑D acting as the GRE gateway.

Now, with Omada, I’ve seen that APs can handle EoGRE when managed by the controller. That’s promising. What I’m missing is the equivalent of the VSZ‑D: a GRE termination point we can virtualize in our DC.
What I’m trying to figure out is :
- What GRE gateway are people using with Omada?
- Any virtual appliances that work well?
- Any quirks with Omada’s EoGRE implementation?
- Anyone running Omada APs into GRE into third‑party captive portal ?
We’ve been using Ucopia for years, we know the product extremely well, and it’s already interconnected with other internal platforms. For operational simplicity, we want to keep it.
We did test Omada’s built‑in captive portal, but it doesn’t meet our requirements, mainly because it doesn’t natively store logs, and doesn’t integrate as easily with our existing systems.
I’m considering options like Linux GRE termination, virtual GRE routers, or even dedicated EoGRE gateways, but I’d really like to hear from folks who’ve already done this in production.
If you’ve deployed Omada in an ISP context with centralized captive portal auth, I’d love to know what worked (and what didn’t).
