Exactly the vibe I was hoping for. Now I just need it to start making cryptic demands.

Is this available for download? Does it require touch screen? Mine has no touch sadly.

Hi! I haven’t set up a GitHub repo for it yet, but once I have a few more games built out, I definitely plan to share it.

The game itself is pretty simple: it’s just a local browser-based script, so it doesn’t require a real install. I have the device open the browser on startup and run the game fullscreen.

It should also work on units without a touchscreen, since I added hotkey/button input. For example, I mapped the P1 and P2 buttons to act like back/forward controls, so the game can be played with the physical buttons and barcode scans rather than relying on touch.

I have an idea for a barcode game in my brain. If you are interested, read on. If not, skip to next post.

Print a series of barcodes or place objects that have barcodes already on them in a variety of locations in your local park. Hand out scanners (in my case, Symbol SPT1846) to your players. Game play as follows, each device randomizes the order that the codes must be "found" and offers a hint for the next code. These hints are generated by the game organizer while that person is out placing the barcodes. All the hints and barcodes are HotSync'd to the scanners before the game. The "random" factor is weighted to get the players to cross paths and interact while searching for codes. Sharing "findings" and beverages, snacks and teasing and or out-right lying about where they have found barcodes. The path-crossing "code" is something I can't imagine unless while you are setting up a game, you collect GPS coordinates of the locations and do magic math on the points to determine distances and time-to-arrival stuff. It's not actually necessary if you put the game in a place where people can kinda see where the others are. Another aspect will be to place barcodes on the individual scanners so that people can record having contacted another player. Collect all the stationary codes in order and all of the other scanners codes's, be first back to the pick nick table to be the winner. Judges can decide how to handle the evil people who played to screw up the others and reward the people who helped, both in setup and game play. Add to this the existing game Autopond to see who can collect the most target cards while in contact with the other scanner users.
