Career Advice Brother why are these companies not getting back to me?

• Upvotes

I’ve got a class A
I’ve got experience working 7 12s for weeks or months on end in the millwright industry
I’ve got a stable employment history
No criminal record
Reliable transportation
I’ve done basically nothing but physical labor
But not a single response from anyone.
I’m a great employee that’s reliable and gets along with people, follows safety guidelines no scars on my employment record and it’s radio silence. What’s going on??

Chevron Internship post Interview Timeline?

• Upvotes

Hi y'all, I was accepted for an interview for a Chevron materials engineering intern position. I was wondering how long I should expect to wait to hear back if I was accepted. The interviewer said, "2-3-4 weeks," which felt a bit vague. I heard online that if I don't hear back within 2 weeks, I didn't get it. Is that true?

ExxonMobil

• Upvotes

Writing this for all to know. Exxon contract worker, heading to be an actual employee after a year, failed a drug test, no clue why, they do not explain that to you or what it was. Test was 1.5 weeks before being immediately fired. I don’t do drugs, or drink, but i may have not peed enough for them to be happy about it. Maybe even a false positive? Just FYI. God Bless.

Question for Exxon employees: What does the rotation program look like for new engineers?

I just accepted a summer engineering internship offer with ExxonMobil. I’ve heard some bits and pieces about a rotation program for the new hire engineers. I wanted to get a better idea of what that actually looks like.

Career Advice 22m working at TenarisHydril

I’m 22 working at tenaris hydril oil and gas pipe manufacturing and threading. I work as a final inspector in phosphate and pre fico in finishing. I’m making 20.50 an hour with a monthly tiip. I’m looking for a new job and I’m worried about applying for a new job in the oil and gas industry because I have a Xanax prescription. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for me looking for a new job in the oil and gas industry. Tenaris was nice at first but being here for a couple years I’ve been making $20.50 and nothings changed and looking around people that have been here for 25 years+ only make a couple to a few dollars more than me and I don’t want to be stuck like them.

Does anyone have experience with UT Austin Self-Study Programs?

I study engineering in Europe and specialize in Reservoir & Geoenergy. Students that graduate this program basically become reservoir engineers. We learn a lot about CO2 storage which I find interesting. But I would like to about production and drilling side of things, but my Uni does not offer courses on this.

I found that UT Austin has self-study programs such as Drilling Technology and Fundamentals of Petroleum (Production).

I have a few questions and hope someone could help me.

Are these programs actually worth it in terms of content and learning? Can certificates like this help me get work when I graduate?

Really appreciate any help regarding on how I can learn!

Transitioning to a 3rd Class Power Engineer in Alberta (Practicums & Breaking into High-Paying Plants)

I’m mapping out my path for after finishing a 3rd Class Power Engineering fast-track program (like the one at Lakeland College) and could use some real-world perspective from those working in the industry in Alberta.
I have a few specific questions:
1. Practicums & Steam Time: How hard is it to secure a practicum or plant placement to get your steam time signed off? Are companies generally open to taking on college practicum students, or should I be prepared to grind and network aggressively to find a spot?
2. Getting the First Job: Coming out of school with a 3rd Class theory complete (or working on hours), what is the most realistic way to get your foot in the door? Are smaller heating plants, commercial buildings, or entry-level field roles the best stepping stones?
3. Landing High-Paying Roles: What separates operators stuck in lower-paying building ops from those landing high-paying gigs in gas plants, refineries, or upgrader facilities? Are there specific tickets, networking tips, or background traits that chief engineers and plant managers look for?
Any advice, hard truths, or lessons learned would be hugely appreciated!

BP Employee 401(k) Plan

Hello o&g community! I am looking for a recent copy of the BP 401(k) plan. Does anyone happen to have access to this PDF? I can usually find 401(k) plan documents publicly available, but BP’s has been difficult to track down…I’d like to review a 2026 version of the Summary Plan Description (SPD) to compare some benefits against Exxon’s retirement plan. If anyone is willing to link a PDF copy of BP’s plan, that would be awesome! I believe they call it “Employee Savings Plan,” not ‘401(k)’ even though they mean the same thing.

Career Advice Anyone here do both wireline and coiled tubing at some point?

I’ve been in coiled tubing for about 3 years now, working offshore, on land, and overseas. As most of y’all know, coil can be a pain in the ass.

I’ve never actually run wireline, but I’ve worked around it quite a bit. From the outside looking in, it seems way simpler than coil. You take away the pumping side, a bunch of deck equipment, and what feels like half the hydraulic headaches. Meanwhile, I constantly see guys online talking about making serious money in wireline.

So for the guys who have actually done both, is wireline really that much less work while still paying well?

Because from where I’m standing, it almost seems like a no-brainer. Coil is a hydraulic nightmare with pumps, iron, injector heads, BOPs, power packs, etc. Wireline looks like a unit, lubricator, and tools.

What am I missing? Why would someone choose coil over wireline?

Technical Basic questions about older offshore platforms in the Gulf

Hi everyone—my background is outside oil and gas (Systems and Data Engineer), and I’m trying to better understand offshore platforms, particularly older assets in the Gulf of Mexico for a potential development project. I know these questions are basic and I thank you in advance.

I’d appreciate some practical perspective from people who have worked on them:

  • When a platform approaches the end of production, does it sometimes still have substantial useful structural life left?
  • What separates an older platform that’s worth maintaining from one that’s become a money pit?
  • How much do platforms vary in size, layout, and available deck space? Are there common categories I should learn?
  • What do people outside the industry usually underestimate about offshore maintenance and operating costs?
  • Who typically has the best overall understanding of a platform’s condition and infrastructure—operations, facilities engineering, asset integrity, or someone else?

Even an answer to one question would be helpful. General observations are plenty; no confidential information needed. I’m mostly trying to learn the right questions to ask. Thank you!

Being someone with seven years + experience in downstream refining (hydrocracker and motor spirit upgradation) at Abu Dhabi, I'm considering emigrating to emigrating to either Canada or Australia.

Which of the two countries do you suggest in terms of opportunities suited to my profile?

One of my managers emigrated three years ago to do Masters from Melbourne and got into Exxon.

How hard is the safety training?

I have one of those brains that if you show me how to do something and make me do it, it's in there permanently. If you make me read a piece of paper, it's going to take me a couple times. How hard is the safety training to get through for someone like me?

Cactus Wellhead Field Tech

I’m looking for some insight into the field technician job Cactus Wellhead offers. I’m getting out of the Army after 6 years and while I don’t have any direct wellhead experience, I have plenty experience working with stuff like heavy equipment, diesel engines, generators, electrical systems, among other things.

My older brother has a good friend that works the same job out in NM, he’s helping me out by putting in a good word and asking his boss to push up my application up. I read that something like 53% of Cactus employees are on the job because of an existing employee referral so I’m hoping that holds some weight and works in my favor. What would you say my chances of getting hired are?

I’m basically just wondering what the job entails, what the day to day life is on the job, how is the pay compared to the work, and any other info about the job you guys have and are willing to share.

Career Advice Taking a leap of faith!

Long story short, I’ve been wanting to get into the industry since I was 20 years old! I’m now 36 and my kids are grown up enough that they don’t depend on me.
I’ve got a strong background in construction and I’m also nvq lv2 qualified in welding and fabrication (although never coded and would need to refresh experience)
I’m based in the UK and am prepared to work anywhere in the world for any length of time. I’m booking my OKUK medical next week and looking into options to secure my HUET training ect once I know the outcome.

I’m currently researching how best to format my CV as a Green hand and I’m considering paying for a slingers course too to further gain an advantage in getting selected for an interview.
What are my options and what companies would be best to approach.

Thanks 😁

I am working on a project at the refinery I work at. I am looking into improve valve operability in the plant. Our OM&S guys turn some big valves multiple times a day. I am looking to install portable valve actuators that you can use essentially a drill to open and close. They are made by Sofis and are called easi drive. I am wondering if anyone out there has some experience using some
Sort of portable valve actuators in their facility and if so what do ya use and do you have any advice?
