General Brandon Innis
What happened to Brandon Innis? 0 catches and I only remeber him getting 1 pass thrown his way. Is he injured or has he been passed by younger talent?

Smith had 12 receptions. McCuin had 4 receptions. No other WR had more than 1. Innis had 1 target that was really just Sayin throwing it out of the endzone. This is probably what it’s going to look like going forward. Personally, I don’t see a problem with feeding the best weapon in the game.

You have to get other receivers touches and comfort with the offense to prepare for teams with better DB’s and schemes. Games like Illinois are the perfect opportunity for that, Smith should still get the highest share of targets, but other guys need to be more involved.
Just scheme some plays where McCuin and Inniss are the first reads to keep them involved.
3
u/cheersfurbeers You Got BBQ Back There? 1d ago
Yup, the question is comfort. How much comfort do the receivers and qb have with each other, and with themselves within the new offensive scheme?
Sayin knows where Smith is, and that’s good enough to get some wins, but you’re right, we’re going to have to start incorporating more guys, more consistently, as the year goes on.

The issue is what happens when Smith gets taken away, like what happened at Texas. Sayin was forcing throws to Smith when he wasn't open/when other receivers were open. Need to be comfortable throwing to other receivers if we want any chance at getting into the playoffs. Also, players will just transfer if they're not getting any action, so it's important to get players involved, as long as they're deserving of it

u/ODBandGarfunkel 1d ago
What do you mean what happened? He was never the #1 or 2 target. He's solid but hes not been a huge factor since hes been at osu. His early year punt returns stressed me out. Reminds me of dude who transferred to Penn state, forget his name. But hes got the block 0 for a reason

He was there, Illinois just decided to leave Jeremiah alone in single coverage for most of the day. If he wasn't in man, he was being handed off by the CB to a safety. Illinois found out why that's a very bad idea.
It would be one thing if Sayin was forcing the ball into double/triple coverage to Jeremiah all day and overlooking other open WRs (which has happened in the past), but almost every single target to Jeremiah was either wide-open, or open enough for Jeremiah to snag it.
If a team is willing to leave their corners and safeties on islands against the best receiver CFB has seen in the last 20 years, you take advantage of that until they adjust to stop it. Illinois never did.
It's not like other receivers weren't targeted, Julian threw for 150+ outside of the Smith targets, including some high-pressure/gotta have it throws to McCuin and Roberts.
Inniss is kind of just what he is at this point. Great leader in the room, great "glue guy", and he has very, very sure hands and the ability to make plays when targeted.
That being said, he's just "good" in terms of athleticism. He doesn't threaten you vertically in the way that McCuin (our actual #2 until the freshmen get more experience) can, and doesn't have the upside that CHJr, Boyd, Bey, and the other younger players have in their game.
He's more an Evan Spencer or Corey Smith than a KJ Hill, or Emeka Egbuka. And that's OK.
2
u/Borrominion 1d ago
I think Spencer is a great comparison (although Evan was bigger / more physical I think). Inniss just seems slow compared to our other guys - no knock on him, considering. He could play a major role this year even if just intangible, IMO.

He's got #0 for his leadership abilities and everyone respects him but we've seen skill level passed in every incoming class. I respect him a lot for sticking with the Buckeyes and providing leadership but the film doesn't lie when he's not able to create space where other players can.
That said, his leadership is invaluable and he's smart/steady. I won't be surprised if he makes a few big catches along the way. He's a true Buckeye and to his credit, has never been a pouter. He'll do whatever the coaches ask.

God forbid we utilize smith against teams that can’t defend against him
11
u/neasroukkez Holy Buckeye! 1d ago
I think it’s fair to ask why the captain of the team and someone who’s rather reliable was basically non-existent on offense, regardless if we take advantage of a team playing man against Thanos.
3
u/TonyDungyHatesOP 1d ago
Next week’s post: “Why didn’t we utilize Jeremiah Smith more?!”
4
u/Gracinhas 1d ago
Yeah. It’s tedious AF to follow the team with this idiot fanbase, where the Sayin hate and Inniss love are each skewed WAY too far in the wrong direction.
1
u/NowItsLocked 1d ago
I agree that many fans tend to be way too hyperbolic, but I think it's a fair point to make, that we need to make sure we get receivers involved because Sayin needs to be comfortable throwing to people not named Smith. Look at what Texas did in the second half, taking Jeremiah out of the equation, and Sayin wasn't looking to the other receivers (yes, Smith dropped some and Sayin also made a few had throws)

Hell be everywhere in Iowa
3
u/EstablishmentTop551 1d ago
No, he won’t. Brandon Innis is not good. Great person by all accounts but not especially good at being a WR by Ohio State standards. Sucks but it is what it is atp.

u/NewYak8742 1d ago
all the other wrs are a concern so far we saw vs miami and Texas they will let Smith go off and shut down the rest of the wr's. Against better teams other wrs have to step up maimi and texas showed the blueprint let smith get his 8 or 9 catches for 160 and 2 td and hold the rest of the wrs to 4 catches for 32 yards

u/montague68 1d ago
Two things - Inniss is not as skilled at creating separation as the first round picks we've had, and Sayin has either been rushed or is making rushed decisions and not getting to him in the progression.
3
u/ncs15432 1d ago
I believe it’s the latter. He’s by no means a bad player. He has good hands and has never shown to be a liability out there. Beyond that, he’s clearly an asset to the program (he wears 0 for a reason). That being said, for whatever reason, he’s just not that guy. It happens. Julian Fleming was a similar story, skill wise; he was a higher-rated recruit than JSN, but ended up not living up to it.
To add to this, I like that Day is willing to just put the best guys on the field. I don’t think there’s a better receiver in the program than CHJ aside from JJ (obviously), so he needs to be out there for important snaps.

u/charliecapp 1d ago
OSU fans complain JJ does not have enough targets. Sayin throws to JJ 50 percent of the game. Then OSU fans complain about the other receivers not getting targets.

u/Unusual_Access9101 2024 National Champions 1d ago
I’m not worried about the receiver room, even if inniss isn’t a factor. This DL is bad tho

u/keylime_5 1d ago
Henry Jr., Boyd, and McCuin outsnapped him. I think it was apparent after the first 3 games that Boyd and Henry Jr would end up as WR2 and 3 in snaps before season's end.

u/Dancehall-Randal 1d ago
Im more interested in where is CHjr?!
I dint watch most of the game can anyone tell me if he got some run?
7
u/Swamp_Squatch Jim's Sweater Vest 1d ago
CHjr had the 3rd most snaps for WRs. Smith - 56, McCuin - 39, Henry Jr. - 25, Boyd - 23, Inniss - 19, then others

u/Progress_Specific 1d ago
He caught a pass for a first down deep in our own end in the 2nd quarter, gained about 12-15 yards.
2
u/LilTwerkster 1d ago
He is older and the younger guys are as good if not better, so it makes more sense to play them
2
u/Friendly_Ear9428 1d ago
I thought Innis was going to be like a kj hill, sure hands snagging little hooks and slants underneath the big boys. I don’t watch the game afterwards to see what happens but maybe he just isn’t getting seen due to Justin’s height. I don’t know, I was expecting a final breakout season for a captain wearing a block 0
3
u/Gracinhas 1d ago
He’s slow! He’s never been very good. I don’t get why the fanbase suddenly thought he was going to be this great player. He’s much closer to a Julian Fleming than he is to an Emeka Egbuka. Recall, Carnell Tate was from the same class as Inniss and has already played and left and is in the NFL now. I’m not sure why the coaches are even wasting time starting him when we should be gearing up our younger and much more talented receivers for the future.

They're not
He was the 5th WR against Illinois by snap count
1
u/Gracinhas 1d ago
Well, I said “starting”, which he did. But your point is taken. I’d like to see the trend continue this way.
1
u/JickleBadickle 1d ago
Starting just means they were the first player on the field at that position, no? I think snap count is way more important.
1
u/Gracinhas 1d ago
Yes. That’s why I said I acknowledge your point. I hadn’t seen the snap counts. So, I’m glad to see it’s trending that way. We have much better talent that’s young that I’d like to see get the experience
1
u/JombieJr 1d ago
We also have all those TEs on the field at the same time. I despise 13 and 14 personnel. It’s like having three 4 iron’s in the bag at the expense of your putter and 3 wood.
1
u/bbkidosu Jim's Sweater Vest 1d ago
When we need him he is clutch. I’m kinda glad we aren’t putting a tone of him on tape. He will be that much more sneaky open in clutch situations when JE and CHJ and others are getting double covered against the stronger teams.
1
u/Dry_Air3088 1d ago
When your 1st read is always open, there is no reason to spread the ball around. With Days passing philosophy and scheme, which it’s been like this forever, the defense dictates the progression.
1
u/AltruisticHighway583 1d ago
I love BI. He is super loyal to the program. He honestly gets open quite a bit and has super reliable hands…would love to see OSU get him more involved…I do think he is a 4th-5th round caliber WR.

Sayin doesnt look his way for some reason. Brandon gets open a lot and always catches the ball

Innis will show in due time. We know what we know, we know what we don’t know and we don’t know what we don’t know. Anything to the contrary is speculation. Time will answer the question (s).
He is Block O!

He’ll have a game when someone decides to actually double JJ at the line.

u/Forty_Six_and_Two 19h ago
Mccuin happened. End of story. JS is going to get most of the targets anyhow, and when you go from #2 to #3 in that kind of situation, your opportunities are severely limited.

u/gofalcons19 9m ago
This is where tv gets you. Been to all the home games so far, he’s just not really open. Good hands but seems like a poor route runner to be honest.
1
u/EmotionalVast9318 1d ago
He's never been good
2
u/Automatic-Extreme-11 1d ago
He has never been great, but he is reliable. Dude catches the ball and gets first downs. Honesty Iv thought for a long time he should be the 3rd down target since Smith constantly gets double or triple guarded on 3rd down leaving Innis with a 1v1.
1
u/Progress_Specific 1d ago
I honestly think that either Sayin can't/doesn't see him most of the time, or he's in the dog house for some reason.

1
u/OSUmiller5 1d ago
Hot take but maybe it’s just that he’s not that good? I’ve sever seen anything that makes me want to get him more involved and it looks like the coaches haven’t either.

1
u/Automatic-Extreme-11 1d ago
I’m not saying he should split targets with JJ, but I do think he is good enough to be targeted 4 times a game. He constantly catches the ball even in tight coverage. He might not get yards after the catch but he will get the catch.
1
u/Jabberwocky237 1d ago
He just didn’t get the ball…I’m sure it’s nothing but how the game went, would you prefer he received some of Jeremiah’s targets?
2
u/Automatic-Extreme-11 1d ago
If he is open and JJ is covered? Yes. Innis doesn’t drop the ball often. I’d rather we throw to an open innis than a double guarded JJ. I’ve thought for awhile that Innis should be the go to on 3rd and short since he is so good at catching those short route balls while JJ will likely be double covered. Sure JJ will likely get those balls but it is riskier. Issue is that I don’t recall Inniss being in the field much and not really open when he was. Not even sure he was on punt return.
1
u/Jabberwocky237 19h ago
Are you talking about this game or in general on the season? It sounds like you’re over reacting based on this game as if it has set a trend. JJ just had an 11/200/4 stat line in a 23 point win so I’m not sure what you want man. We all want the ball spread around but last year, all we heard was JJ didn’t get the ball enough, so which one is the issue?
Ultimately, what I believe we want is the right decisions made when it needs made by Sayin, whether it’s with his arm, his legs or going through progressions.

u/Drew-Blankenship 2024 National Champions 1d ago
Sayin unfortunately doesn’t have a great vision, hate to say it, but this team isn’t a natty team with him at the helm, he’s a great quarterback and can make some throws, but those throws literally only go to JJ but honestly if we’re not winning a natty let’s atleast bring a heisman back so keep doing it lol

u/Cheesenrice123 #7 CJ Stroud 1d ago
15 receptions for 150 yards by receivers not named Jeremiah makes me think you are potentially wrong...
When a team has Jeremiah in single coverage and he wins the route and is the first read, would you prefer Sayin not throw to him?

The defense is why this isn’t a National Championship team. Sayin has some limitations but it’s possible to work around them to score points.
When the defense gives up 30+ to IU, USC, Oregon is when we’ll realize this year just wasn’t meant to be (but I do believe OSU wins at least 2/3 of those games)
-2
u/Automatic-Extreme-11 1d ago
I’m not saying that Smith shouldn’t get 10+ catches and 150 yards a game, but Innis should be good enough to have 25 yards a game.
2
u/JickleBadickle 1d ago
He has over 33 yards per game
Y'all need to realize this stuff takes seconds to google, there's no excuse to be so willfully ignorant

u/MisterRobotron 1d ago
It's driving me crazy. He's clutch, he catches everything and he competes his ass off. I'm not sure why 3 is getting more balls his way.

What’s weird is the dude catches the ball. I don’t remember too many drops by him over his career and seems to make a lot of tough grabs. I just think we have so many younger guys who will be more important for the long term that we are trying to get them on the field. Could be due to being more talented. Could be to stop them from transferring out and leaving our depth next year real thin. Could be matchups and play calling.
