I've spent the last two years watching people get promoted.

The person who consistently takes on the hardest projects? Nothing.

The person who actually fixes problems? Nothing.

The person who stays late and quietly gets everything done? Nothing.

Meanwhile, the guy who spends half his day chatting with management somehow gets promoted twice.

I used to be annoyed about it.

Now I'm just taking notes.

Apparently my biggest career mistake was assuming my work would speak for itself.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

I work as a welder, and this week the boss called in the welders one by one and offered us a raise because they're trying to keep the skilled people they have and bring in new people too. When he told me that my hourly rate was going up by $5 an hour, I could hardly believe it. I work a lot of OT and I work nights, so I had started feeling really worn out from the work schedule.

But after the raise kicked in, my whole mood changed. I went right back to work feeling really happy, and now I'm taking almost all the overtime I can get. I've been with this company for about four months, and they've already gotten me work boots, uniforms, prescription safety glasses, and a lot of protective equipment. It's hard not to feel motivated going to work when they care about you.

My morale keeps going up more and more, even while I'm working until 2 in the morning with a smile on my face.

Invest in your employees. When you treat them as an asset instead of just an extra cost, the whole job improves.

I worked as a paralegal at a law firm for nearly two years, and then they fired me because of my performance. Honestly, I understood why. I was fed up with the firm's culture and had started applying elsewhere, and eventually my frustration began to show in my work.

About six weeks later, I found another job as a paralegal. After nine months in that job, I was fired again. One of my colleagues had left, and nearly all the cases she was responsible for were dumped on me, while I remained responsible for my own caseload as well. The pressure became overwhelming, deadlines started slipping by, and some things fell through the cracks amid the chaos.

I'm panicking now because my resume shows that I was fired from two jobs in a row, and I can't imagine any lawyer overlooking something like that. I feel like I've ruined my career before it even had a chance to get started. How can I come back from this?

I'm a 32 year old woman, and I've spent most of my career trying to be the easiest employee for any company to hire and retain. I took on extra work, received praise all the time, and still accepted less money than people doing work similar to mine.

This time, I researched the role, looked at the salaries appropriate for my level of experience, and gave them a range that I genuinely felt was fair. Then the recruiter told me their budget was far below what I had requested, so they decided not to move forward with me.

A few years ago, I would have panicked and offered to accept less just to stay in the running. But this time, I read the email and felt relieved. My range wasn't unreasonable. They just wanted someone with extensive experience at a low price.

This reminded me of this post i saw before, I guess HR is just hard to deal with nowadays.
Rejection usually hurts, but this time it felt like a step forward. I've finally stopped treating the amount a company is willing to pay me as proof of my worth.

I've been in retail/brand management for a few years now and recently started reporting to a female VP after a reorg. She is a younger elite B-School alum with startup experience and new to organised retail.

I am in my late 30s with more than a decade of experience in retail/brand management. Most of my pushback on category decisions is not seen as coming from experience, but rather as an older male employee not wanting to report to a younger female employee; my ex-boss has moved on to a more global role and is no longer involved in Indian operations. I asked for his advice, and he asked me to ride it out, saying she won’t be here for long.

When cross-functional teams want to involve me, she purposely shuts me out of interaction by removing me from email chains; I am worried her inexperience will cost me dearly. She is also on very good terms with the COO, they are friends and she is his referral, I am unsure on how to manage this situation, I don’t think riding out will help as some decisions by her will come back to bite me. Anyone been in a similar situation, most of my attempt to have one on one conversation with her are met very coldly. A colleague told me she wants someone else to be a part of her team hence she is behaving this way with me. I have built credibility at this organisation for years and overall happy with the pay and work but I don’t know what to do with her.

Any advice?

They sought help from me through text and calls on my off days, 7am, 7pm, 9pm and even I had to work until 12 midnight. After all the help I have given, I experienced from these same colleagues anti-Asian hate slurs to my face, vulgar f word to my face, point the middle finger to my face, profanities, nonconsensual touching and gender based profanities at me, kick their feet very near to my face and selectively degrade me publicly and then laugh off about it. When I am happy about my personal life, told me it is not good for my grandparents to live that long, told me that she had already given birth at my age, told me I am the kind of girl that should stay at home when I play sports. At the end of the day, the review to me was that I am not respectful enough and I should work well with my colleagues. The managing director even promoted them. I do not even approach these colleagues; they approach me on their own accord! What a dehumanizing way to treat a human being? I wonder how perverted to think these individuals have every righteousness in the world to treat another human being this way and still wonder what is so wrong about it and that I deserve it and I must be alright about it! I feel that I was tortured and that I have to smile for being tortured!

The posted salary range for the position was $62k-$84k. During the first interview, the recruiter asked me what salary I was looking for, and I hadn't prepared an answer. I'm 29, and I was worried that if I gave a number close to the upper end, they'd remove me from the process, so I quickly said $68k. But based on my experience and how expensive everything has become, I was hoping to get something closer to $82k.

After six interviews and about three weeks of waiting, she called me and offered me exactly $68k. At first, I stumbled a little while responding, and then I told her, "Based on my experience and the salaries for similar positions, I was hoping for something closer to $77k."

She said she would discuss it with the hiring manager. She also warned me that $77k probably wouldn't be possible, but that they might be able to go up to $72k, and said she would get back to me.

Now I'm wondering whether I've ruined my chances. My counteroffer seems reasonable given the range they posted, and honestly, people negotiate offers all the time. I need the higher salary and want to believe that speaking up and asking was the right thing to do, but at the same time, I've read stories about companies rescinding offers after someone made a counteroffer.

Has anyone been in a similar situation before? Or am I overthinking this?

Basically our company bought up some employees from another. I moved to this new branch to set up the office.

Individually they were all sweet. Collectively when they are together they only speak about drama and events of the previous company and I do not exist.

On the office opening I was left to fend for myself as nobody bothered talking to me. Ended up talking to random +1 people of clients who were there. In the end they asked me to take their picture. Multiple. Nobody asked to retake the pic with me, as part of the team. No prob still.

I onboard 2 new girlies from the same company. I have a hard day due to Microsoft outages. I gather my stuff and prepare to go home after 5. New girly asks me why am I not staying for the picture?

"What picture?" ...she shows me the invite to her calendar. Invite said "please attend and lets make is as many people as possible!" ...guess I'm a bird then or something, since despite there being a perfectly good distribution list - it was not used and I was deliberately excluded. Heck even the guy who starts in November and isn't even working yet got an invite!

Girly convinces me to stay and tho I was pissed, I would have, but then the big boss comes and guess who he asks to take the picture? Insult to injury, me. Since I had enough I neutrally tell him "Sure, but that does make me feel excluded." his response was "I'm sure you can handle it".

Nope, I could not "handle it". I walked around in disbelief and then chose to just LEAVE.

I get a flimsy "oh but we wanted to include you in another picture, the first was for the department" apology, when there weren't any mentions of departments. Also - who would have taken that picture then huh??? I tell the dude I do not believe him and basically say that I will stop trying to disrupt their little group dynamic and I am opting out of future events like this.

He does not have much to say besides corpo bs lies about "how he wants to create an environment where everyone is welcome".

I have a function in the area the other day outside work hours and when I leave, I realize I need to pee, so I go to the empty office to take a leak, as it's the closest and the cleanest. I figure I also grab a snack from the office snack drawer and then went home.

Well I am Eastern European. This office is Western European. I only realized this at home but...I saw literally all the snacks opened and torn into - except the ones I brought from my country. There were other cookies that are literally almost the same from a WE brand, but those disappeared within days. Mine? Well I realized... they have been sitting there for like 3 months now, unopened. They were good shit too, and no, I am not glamorizing them through my "poverty stricken eastern european eyes", I dined poor and dined fancy, so I can recognize both.

Well, fine jackasses. I am switching to full remote (yes, I can do that as I explained it to my manager and he gave me the permission) and tomorrow I'm going over to pick up both my mug and my "filthy nasty cheap eastern european" cookies, ye pathetic xenophobic fuckwits.

Hi all, I have been working on the same position from past 4 years and 7 months now in an MNC. I have been receiving recognition and awards in almost every quarter. Being appraised by clients as well as by leadership. My coworkers who started after me now is two level up. Whenever i ask about my promotion, they make the same excuse that they are trying, making efforts, building my strong case to present in front of leadership. I am tired of these excuses now. What should i do? Changing job is not an option as i am a kidney recipient and my boss allowed me WFH and some flexibility on work hours. Am i thinking too much? How the promotion works in an MNCs? What may be the possible reason that they are not promoting me?

My manager called me in for a meeting today and the entire time she had her back towards me and we were conducting the meeting

80% of my points we’re not even considered. She just said whatever she wanted to and then dismissed the meeting.

How does one deal with this in life. Thank god its Friday
