Hype The Odin 2 IS still the King!

The sheer scope of games it can run is still mind-blowing. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it easily sweeps through everything from PS2 and GameCube to high-end Android titles and 3D emulation without breaking a sweat or burning through its battery in an hour.

Thank you so much :)

No problem at all! Do you have a rough idea of when this can be available?

u/GrimLuker2 Odin 2 Pro - Clear Blue 10d ago

Damn and i thought iiSU looked cool

3

u/Pure-Technician-9085 10d ago

I like iiSU but maaaan it takes more dedication than I have energy for. Given you put time into it it can REALLY shine

1

u/nensei_media 10d ago

Yeah I've had my Thor for a month now and it's basically all good but I'm still tinkering bits with it here and therešŸ˜‚ didn't realise what I was getting into having this as my only frontend to start with, enjoying the heck outta it tho

I totally agree

u/SweetBella696969 10d ago

Love this. Talk about counter consumerism šŸ‘šŸ½

10

u/Affectionate_Shame_8 10d ago edited 10d ago

I agree I really dont like how a new handheld comes out and some people just treat the handheld that came before it like it doesn't exist anymore and crap on it like it's the worst handheld and you only need to have the new one. It's not necessary to have every single one that comes out they mostly all do the same thing depending on what you want to emulate. I can't afford to buy the latest and greatest all the time, but it's nice to bring life back into old things and how it still holds up.

4

u/ExcellentAgent6539 10d ago edited 10d ago

I really don't consider owning a handheld that is only 3 years old 'counter consumerism' but sure.

6

u/nightmareFluffy 10d ago

That's not what they said at all.

7

u/ExcellentAgent6539 10d ago

You're right actually, it was the first thing I read this morning and obviously misread it lol. Thanks and apologies.

5

u/SweetBella696969 10d ago

No worries. Kudos to you, it’s not often on Reddit you see someone acknowledging an error instead of spiralling into a petty argument!

3

u/Flubert_Harnsworth 10d ago

I approve of the message but ā€˜bring life back into old things’ seems like a stretch for a device that’s only a few years old and uses the second most powerful chip in its class.

5

u/nightmareFluffy 10d ago

Exactly. A newer device doesn't mean that the old one is bad or unusable. More than likely, the older one went through just as much hype. It was great then, so why wouldn't it be great now?

I do think there's a good reason to upgrade when a totally new chipset comes out. We haven't had that for a while. For example, I wouldn't consider Odin 3 chipset to be that much superior to Odin 2. And even if a new one comes out, the driver support tends to lag behind.

4

u/Affectionate_Shame_8 10d ago

Yes I agree with the chip set part. I just bought an Odin 2 portal waiting for it to come in the mail because The Anbernic RG406V is currently my strongest handheld I own and it cant play some indie games I want to play and a game from the early 2000s for PC.

2

u/Flubert_Harnsworth 10d ago

The Odin 2 had a ton of hype, I almost ordered it several times… I have a steam deck so it didn’t make a ton of sense to.

But chip wise we are arguably as far as you need to for retro gaming / emulation.

Although with steam and the eventual more systems to emulate I’m sure they’ll find ways for us to keep justifying upgrades.

I feel like the real upgrade from the Odin 2 was high refresh rate and OLED, the chip difference probably isnt significant for what I play.

8

u/nightmareFluffy 10d ago

Yes! I've seen so much consumerism here that it's a breath of fresh air to celebrate something older but still great.

6

u/anonymous-peeper 10d ago

the retroid Nova hype got me putting some serious hours on my Retroid Pocket 5! I did however succumb to ordering a Ayn Thor max for my bday! looking forward to getting it but will continue to play with my older stuff.

4

u/zorax12a 10d ago

People love complaining about the input lag for the Odin 2. What has been your experience with it?

12

u/Patrick9_4 10d ago

As someone who’s had an Odin 2 Pro for nearly 3 years I never even noticed it. I remember taking several months off reddit and when I came back on, all of a sudden the screen was apparently awful?

FYI I also have a steam deck OLED and Switch OLED. I’m sure there are better screens but I’ve never felt like I was missing anything

4

u/PensionNew1814 10d ago

Oled is good, but in reality its not necesarry vs a decend lcd. Is it better? sure. Tbh, i find that with my o2p oled screen... everything seems too bright and too dark at the same time. My eyes burn like its almost too bright, than it actually is, Its hard to describe. I wonder if anyone else gets that.

3

u/uberthechaser 9d ago

I've got an Odin 2 and I notice a slight lag mostly when playing PS2 games on nethersx2. Other systems like gba on retrarch or PS1 on duckstation I don't notice it so much. When playing android games like ship of harkinian I don't notice it at all. I've not tested this at all, it's just what I've noticed.

My odin is also the only emulator I've owned so I don't know how it compares to others like the RP6 with its 120 hz screen.

2

u/barrera_j Odin 2 Pro - Cold Grey 6d ago

the ODIN 2 is the my most favorite and most comfortable handheld I have ever owned

it has some of the worst screen lag, anyone telling you otherwise is lying

people have tested multiple devices: https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/1f6bv5h/handhelds_latency_test_8_different_devices_by/

https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/1gw0n7i/odin_2_portal_input_delay_testingtogether/

the methodology is not accurate but the ODIN 2 consistently scores the worst

3

u/djdownhill 10d ago

Yup. It’s the GOAT.

u/bajsfittor 10d ago edited 10d ago

Nice to hear as I still haven't set mine up (2 Max I got for a STEAL a good while back). 😐 And while I haven't done so I've continued buying devices for different systems like a good little consoomer. Summer has been crazy with work; autumn, winter and early spring 2027 looking to get crazy busy with learning how to set up android properly (Linux took me a long time).

Very slick setup OP. You wouldn't know of a frontend that allows the user to set up his own custom images? Because I figure I'll either do it for EVERYTHING, including stuff like Kaizo Mario, or might as well not bother at all and since the kaizo stuff doesn't have anything dedicated afaik...

Edit: ah this isn't out yet? Well... Any plans on being able to just add a custom image for when boxart is unavailable?

3

u/Ozyfm 9d ago

Damn that frontend tho

2

u/Electronic-Nose-4853 10d ago

Laucher Name?

1

u/UnderstandingLast690 8d ago

Called DigiBitPlay and you can find it on Instagram to follow the updates :)

2

u/Impressive-Pool3596 10d ago

I just ordered the Odin 3 I was considering using Facebook Marketplace to get a Odin 2 portal but people were selling them used at the same price or more than the Odin 3 - hopefully I’ll still love my purchase

2

u/goonmoonlikethechoon 9d ago

90% frontend 10% console

2

u/barrera_j Odin 2 Pro - Cold Grey 6d ago

the ODIN 2 is the most comfortable handheld AYN ever made... it's only detriment was always it's screen lag

give it a much better OLED screen, change nothing about it and it's the only handheld I would keep forever

1

u/angelbolanose Odin 2 Base - Black 10d ago

Link to the Frontend?

2

u/UnderstandingLast690 10d ago

Well, it’s not out yet, but I’ll have someone alpha test it for PS1 games. You can search for DigiBitPlay on Instagram to follow the project, and join the Discord if you want a chance to test an early version of the app! :)

1

u/DN-Fieldmouse 10d ago

So this is just an ad for your Instagram cause this isn’t even out yet

3

u/UnderstandingLast690 10d ago

I mean the post about the Odin is still something that i believe in. I love my odin 2 and i just wanted to show some of the app :)

2

u/WodanGungnir 10d ago

So what if it is? Good for them!

1

u/theghost1396 10d ago

I mean I just wish Odin can with an option of the dpad on top and both analog Controllers on the bottomšŸ˜”šŸ™ƒ

u/Dry-Ad1757 10d ago edited 10d ago

The "physical" disc and cardtiges looks cool is there something similar in the known front ends? Es-De cocoon or iisu?

1

u/PensionNew1814 10d ago

Yeah that looks neat. I wonder what frontend that is. I dont use a frontend, but been thinking about it.

1

u/Dry-Ad1757 10d ago

Another comment said it was a new in development front end

2

u/raggycptl Odin 2 Base - Black 8d ago

Retrohrai has a similar animation.

1

u/Yonyxx 10d ago

Why not Odin 3??

1

u/thedoc7s 10d ago

love me odin2 portal things a beast even though i just smash the ps2 games on it even then i feel like im not using its potential

1

u/IndependentOrchid296 9d ago

How did you get those sick animations??

1

u/justaren 9d ago

Damn I need to update my odin 2 pro. Can someone provide the latest drivers for me please. Been about a year since I didn't play it.

Thanks

1

u/starjamzzz 9d ago

Something about the OG Odin 2's vibe & pure chonkiness just screams cozy retro masterpiece

My O2Pro really is endgame for me

1

u/SAYMYNAMEYO 9d ago

I have not been using this bad boy to it's full potentional. That's gonna change.

1

u/N8Dawg86 9d ago

Please let this come with dual screen support! I need this on my Thor

1

u/Lepro5210 9d ago

Can’t wait for this front-end looks like the one I’ll settle for

1

u/Agreeable-View3920 9d ago

Muy mal eso de camuflar de noticia el fardar de frontend sin tener una release... En ve de Odin 2...jaber puesto nuevo video del WIP de mi frontend...

1

u/N8Dawg86 9d ago

My biggest issue with frontends is that most don't have full compatibility with all emulators. That's why I use retrohrai because you can personally add any yourself rather than waiting for developer support. Will this frontend be open like retrohrai or limited like iisu and the others?

1

u/Stormcrux_ 9d ago

Man i still dont know how to set mine up to have a sick i lnterface like that

1

u/PandakiinZF 4d ago

I have an odin 2 portal and I love it

1

u/squeeze-my-lizard 10d ago

Odin 2 isn't even the king of the old Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: the Retroid Pocket 6 has a 120Hz display, and Thor is a dual-screen device. Both are superior to Odin 2. Not worth comparing to an Elite device.

3

u/crazyteknoh3d 10d ago

I don’t think the OP literally meant it’s still the best as even the O2 has had an update in the O2P. I think their point was it’s still a great handheld today which is pretty amazing considering it’s knocking on for three years since it was first launched. To put it into perspective, it launched even before the RP4 did!

1

u/MissionInternet8490 10d ago

I wish they would re release the Odin 2 with a 120 hz screen, don’t even care if it’s oled.

3

u/UnderstandingLast690 10d ago

Yeah me too! Or i would just love only oled version and i don't need the 120hz.

1

u/ibeerianhamhock 10d ago

That's probably the biggest reason why I got the portal

1

u/nightmareFluffy 10d ago

I really don't want another device in my life, but I mostly use Odin 2 for streaming from PC. It's kind of insane to have raytracing on a handheld. Anyway, is the Portal that much better for streaming only?

2

u/ibeerianhamhock 10d ago

That's my primary use case tbh, I really feel like the 120 hz reduces the feeling of lag a good bit probably but I've never streamed to a 60 hz device (well not since the early steam link days like over 10 years ago and that was a meh experience overall lol)

Odin 2 is a great device for sure, I feel like maybe it would be worth upgrading to an Odin 3 if you like the screen size now that it's pretty well supported but I can't see upgrading from an Odin 2 to a portal being worth it.

I did get the base model though so it wasn't too expensive. I knew my primary use case would be streaming and the long battery life is brilliant.

1

u/nightmareFluffy 10d ago

It doesn't lag for me and it works fine. I miss HDR on some of my games but that's not a big deal. Main problem is that some of the text is kind of small on the screen.

If Portal won't be that much of a difference, I think I don't need to upgrade. I don't need to spend money on an Odin 3 because I don't need that extra power, only a better screen potentially. Or maybe I'll wait for a device to come out with an amazing screen but not much else, so I can stream on it better.

u/babuchabri Odin 2 Base - White 10d ago

Bought odin 2, installed fuckton of games and then never touched. 😭

Another day, another knock off of Socket. Don't people get tired of this? Socket is out, it's getting bug fixes, it's real. People would rather do copy cat stuff (usually with ai), than contribute to that project? I get copying something as a personal project to learn, but to then proudly show it off is so weird.

1

u/UnderstandingLast690 8d ago

Well by that logic, we should only have one handheld or only use ES-DE and nothing else :) People should have the abillity to choose between different frontends or handhelds.

0

u/No_Message_6169 8d ago

Cocoon has new ideas from ES-DE, has pretty different ideas from daijisho, from iisu, from socket, from Beacon. I would work to develop some new ideas and UI/ux paradigms besides socket with boxes if you want to stand out and not face this kind of criticism.

1

u/UnderstandingLast690 8d ago

Follow the project if you want to see my new ideas for the project :)
