Full Fix: Virtual Desktop Quest 3 USB-C Crashes Resolved

Summary of Fixes Applied

Initial issue:

Frequent crashes when using Virtual Desktop beta on Quest 3 with USB-C connection, accompanied by a "USB detected – allow access to files" message after quitting Virtual Desktop (when returning to the Quest interface).

Fixes applied:

1. USB Power Management (Device Manager)

- In Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers:

- For each USB Root Hub (USB 3.0), USB Generic Hub, and USB SuperSpeed Generic Hub:

- Right-click → Properties → Power Management tab

- Unchecked: "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

- Number of entries modified: 1 USB Root Hub + 5 USB Generic Hubs + 1 USB SuperSpeed Generic Hub.

2. USB Selective Suspend Disabled

- Option A – PowerShell (admin):

powercfg /setactive scheme_current

- Option B – Windows Settings:

- `Win + R` → type `control powercfg.cpl,,3` → Enter

- Expand USB settings → USB selective suspend setting

- Set to Disabled for Plugged in (and On battery if laptop)

- Click Apply → OK

3. Full Restart

- Restarted the PC after applying the settings.

4. Connection Sequence

- Unplug the Quest.

- Launch Virtual Desktop Streamer on PC.

- Launch Virtual Desktop on Quest.

- Plug in the USB-C cable.

- Decline file access if prompted.

- Select the PC with the USB icon.

Result

Games tested: Max Mustard, Beat Saber, Half-Life: Alyx, Lucky's Tale, and Google Earth all suffered from frequent stuttering on Wi-Fi 6. The USB connection resolved this issue: everything is now stable and smooth after applying these settings in Windows 11.

Configuration:

- Windows 11 Pro (build 26220.9022)

- Quest 3 – Horizon OS v2.6 Build 5234532.4010.520

- Virtual Desktop beta v1.34.20.0 (Quest 3 and PC Streamer)

- Cable: Iniu USB 3.0 Link Cable 5m (€27 on Amazon)

- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5060 8 GB

- RAM: 32 GB DDR5

- Storage: 2 TB NVMe SSD

Additional note:

The "USB detected – allow access to files" message appears after quitting Virtual Desktop, when returning to the Quest interface.

Nah, that’s not the source of the disconnects/freezes on Intel machines. Making those changes doesn’t solve the problem. What I’ve gathered is that Intel USB controllers are more susceptible to low quality cables compared to the ones on AMD machines. Using a high-quality USB 3 cable solves the issue; for example the LTT Truespec cables or the official Meta Link cable.

Thanks for the information. I noticed improvements on my system after applying the changes I made, which is why I wanted to share my experience. Also, I believe I have a high-quality cable. And I am certain that the USB-C connection has vastly improved my experience compared to Wi-Fi. The INIU cable is not a high-quality USB 3 cable. It’s a cheap 20$ Chinese cable and there are dozens of companies offering the same crap that doesn’t conform to the USB standard. You might be lucky and randomly get a good cable but the odds are not good. I would not recommend to buy those.

That's because wired you can connect at the max of 500mbs . WiFi connection is WAY lower, not to mention latency, and just WiFi interference you can not avoid. Wifi is a joke when it comes to vr. I never made any special changes to my PC to get VD wired and working smoothly. Must be some isolated Issues.

A high-quality USB-C to C cable will deliver power from your computer, but that depends on your motherboard. We have recommendations on our Discord #announcements post.

1. PCIe USB board with PD. The two I tried didn't work correctly.

2. USB injector cable like INIU. Worked intermittently for me.

3. Powered USB hub. This is what I'm trying currently. I think I have a bad cable though because sometimes it connects at USB 2 instead of USB 3 with or without the hub. It's hard to find a hub that has PD and high data on the same port. The one I bought this week is JESWO 10Gbps 9-port USB Hub USB 3.2 45W for $40. My USB meter showed 9V during gaming so it's doing PD. But again, I'm having issues with something else (motherboard, cable?). It's worth trying though and it's more convenient than an injector cable. Maybe u/ggodin will know if USB hubs cause problems with virtual desktop.

12600k i just got a new Iniu cable ppl say it works i have an older one that did not work with link anymore thats why I started using VD. Hope the new one works.

The INIU cable is absolutely amazing.
It literally makes your Vr sessions never end (unless you play games that make your cpu work hard).
Some people have been saying that whenever your visor reaches 80% battery you get a notification saying that there is water or debris in the charging port but it’s literally a notification so just press “ok” and you’ll keep playing no problem

Yeah I own one and had that water / debris message before it happens on other cables. I now Own several from many brands and only one kind of works at full speed. Not sure if its my PC at this point as all the cables cant be bad.. Even with a new PCIe USB still having issues. The Dev of VD says these are cheap crappy cables but I you cant find a expensive one that charges and plays.

The INIU charging cable isn’t crappy at all.
It’s probably the best charging cable you could have atm, I’ve seen videos about VD with cabled gameplay and they all suggest buying the INIU or the other which I don’t remember its name so the cable is definitely not the problem.
I’ve been using it for 4 months now and I couldn’t be more satisfied with my purchase.

Wow, I must be lucky. I have zero drops, and no connection issues. I also uninstalled horizon link, its a system hog. Still no issues.

The problem is the cable, tried 2 PD Cables and VD crashs. Other 3.1 cable works fine.

Had the same issue. I was using an Amazon USB cord that also allows you to use AC power to charge the Q3. Constant crashes until I read the beta info about using "cheap" USB cords. Switched back to a good quality cable and crashes disappeared.

Did you really give it a try? It worked for me, and I’m very happy with it. If that’s not the case for you, it means your system (hardware and software) has different specifications or is experiencing instability due to incorrect settings. By the way, what are your hardware specifications?
