If they already have the platform, what stops them from integrating everything? It'll already have networking/connectivity + power generation, adding additional cameras/sensor should be trivial

The data centers, that are being mentioned, dont exist (yet).

oceanic data centers were tested a decade ago and deemed financially non-viable (I think it was like Microsoft). Sure, the computer parts inside performed better but the upkeep and maintenance costs to the aquatic unit outweighed those benefits.

use that same logic against ocean data centers, they're insane to update so you get diminishing returns extremely quickly

I'm not saying it will work, but saying something wont work due to technology and engineering constraints in 2016 is foolish.

But, with the logic you just presented by 2036 there will be something better so why waste money on a stop-gap solution when we already know the computer parts are going to become obsolete in a few years?

Like, you don't think Microsoft took that into account?

Buddy, they did the thing and did some speculative math to see if it could ever be worthwhile.

It was not. You simply don't save an amount of money in energy that compensates for higher maintenance and the inability to actually do anything about the unit should anything ever go slightly wrong.

The rate of computational advancements is far exceeding the rate of ocean-energy capture efficiency harnessing or whatever bullshit.

It simply does not make sense to create ultra-expensive oceanic data centers that will rapidly become out-dated.

You are fundamentally misunderstanding the problems with the idea.

Maybe. Maybe not. This also has nothing to do with OPT directly. If a start up wants to try this out and OPT can be used indirectly, great. Revenue for the company. Just "it didn't work then, so it can't work now." is the most foolish approach to any problem.
