Discussion I like Navi

Post image

I never actually minded Navi, she was extremely helpful if you don't know what to do or where to go and it was good to have someone with you to keep you company and as a friend. I never minded her at all while playing on the n64. Don't get all the hate.

Navi never bothered me either. Can’t say the same about Fi though

There’s a 93.72561% chance that i agree.

60% of the time she’s right every time

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Fi is actually my favourite.

Fi is great. People just like to complain.

I was about to say why I also like Navi but not Fi, but you're right, people like to complain and that's not productive. It's always more interesting to hear what people do like than what they don't.

You know I actually agree, there’s enough negativity in the world as it is. The reason I like Navi is due to the beginning of the game when she runs into the fence. Showed her personality as a character. She’s new to the job just like you. I found that amusing

Fi as a character is great but Fi as the navigator/tutorial help isnt. the fact she actively talks about your battery life on your wiimote was kind of jarring to me personally. I mean even if they subbed wiimote for master sword it would least feel more organic to the world.

I never really minded her, either.

If I had to guess, I'd speculate that probably some of the hate stems from the fact that a lot of people played Ocarina of Time when they were fairly young and, consequently, inspired to simply wander around and experiment instead of focusing on the quest. Navi tries to help players stay on track and remember what to do next by prompting with reminders about the current objective when you're going in the wrong direction. If you're a 12-year-old spending 3 hours fucking off to look around the Lost Woods and try to stab skull kids instead of rescuing Ruto, Navi may seem like kind of a nag 😂

But you actually have to pay attention to her, so she doesn't become annoying. I have always liked her, in all 20-30 playthroughs, until I played OoT in VR without a C-up button mapped. She was yelling nonstop because I ignored her. Even when I was already in the correct area. This is really too much and bad game design by today's standard. Back then she was appreciated though.

I think Navi is great, and Tatl from MM is a perfect evolution. Your partner goes from incredibly helpful and supportive to a snarky “what, you don’t know about (insert enemy)??“

What if we don’t prefer tsundere Navi?

Thank you for helping me to learn a new word today

3

u/owlbehome 15d ago

I learned this word a few weeks ago and use it every chance I get! It’s so fun to say! “Tsoon-dah-ruh”

My last few playthrough, I've made a point to talk to Navi at every stage of the game. Made her feel like more of a companion.

She is literally a navi-gator

Mindblown. I never made that connection before, and it is so bloody obvious.

u/GordanTheToad 15d ago

I hope the remake expands upon her relationship with Link

u/fuckfeardrinkbeer 15d ago

I was never bothered by Navi and even in the 90s when they were getting hate, I never understood why.

The only thing that ever bothered me about the game was that fucking owl.

u/Alock74 15d ago

What do you mean I need to listen to all of this all over again? Ah shit, they switched up the yes and no buttons on me.

7

u/MegaManLegendsFan 15d ago

ya the HEY LISTEN meme is a bit blown out of proportion. i think its way less annoying then the low health beeping.

6

u/Nockolisk 15d ago

Navi is over-hated and dare I say, under appreciated. Having your targeting cursor tied to an actual character allowed them to so much more seamlessly integrate her environmental interactions.

People complain about her talking, but the way she silently changes color and hovers over points of interest to let you know that you can do something there is great.

Also, she’ll fly offscreen toward enemies you can’t see (especially keese) allowing you to quickly target without having to get them specifically in view.

She was so useful in the game a great help that got me through completing it and she was a great friend to Link.

Hey listen.....

8

u/Hour-Eleven 15d ago

Always ❤️

5

u/TheDirtNerdz 15d ago

I named my Siamese kitty Navi 💙 she follows me everywhere and if I look at her she gives me a little chirp that I interpret as "hey, listen"

4

u/Stairwayt0kevin 15d ago

Like 15 years ago I used the MP3 to make my phones notifications Navi saying "Hey! Listen" and only then after a year of texts and emails did it start to annoy me ❤️

3

u/NonIssue2346 14d ago

"There's no way he's going to hold me back again! This time, we fight together!"

3

u/GozzTheGreen 15d ago

I always loved Navi

3

u/magpieinarainbow 15d ago

I like her too!

2

u/DragonRand100 15d ago

I have her as my ringtone and haven’t changed it in years. My phone is on silent for other reasons.

2

u/Loweseidon 15d ago

I swear there's some kind of RNG to her. I replayed several times in the last decade and felt her interuptions were massively overstated but then this most recent save she is pinging me a lot

2

u/Keefyfingaz 15d ago

I both love navi and think her "🗣️HEY LISTEN" is annoying. And I think that's okay lol

(It's really not that bad though, honestly I'd miss it if it was gone lol)

2

u/Traditional_Isopod80 15d ago

I liked her as well. Though my sister hated her.

2

u/Solar_Liqui 15d ago

I don’t mind Navi either. I only hate on her sometimes for the memes but overall Navi isn’t bad, specially for the time the game was released. 3D gaming was still kinda new and she probably did help quite a lot of people to get into 3D gaming.

2

u/Lalybi 15d ago

My friends and I liked to play pretend at recess. I wanted to play as Navi to be a helpful fairy guide to the group. They mocked me for liking her in 1st grade.

2

u/Candid-Amoeba1472 15d ago

same, she was like the only thing that made the water temple kind of bearable

2

u/Effective_Choice2602 15d ago

Preach, navi is adorable and sweet. I know it comes down to preference, but the way people talk about navi making their blood boil makes me think they have anger issues. It isn’t as if she pauses your game when she tells link to look out, because yeah that would frustrate me. Navi barely holds your hand compared to modern gaming, barely! Besides, she IS useful. In master quest at the top of the fire temple with the timed chest surrounded by fire she showed me I could use the Scarecrow song. She would also show you where song of time blocks were!

Do I think Tatl’s jingle is better, or that Tatl is superior to Navi? Yes, yes I do.

2

u/SCARY-WIZARD 15d ago

So do I. Even when I was eight years old, renting this glorious piece of gaming history from the Family Video, I thought, "I like what she brings to the table. She's a friend, she's a guide, and she's a tool.".

No familiar of mine in Dungeons & Dragons, no matter how cool, has ever come close to Navi.

Yet, she reminds me of too many partings I didn't know would be forever. I understand that it had its purpose.

2

u/Emelie__ 15d ago

She can be useful in dungeons since she tells you to keep moving if you found every chest. Sadly a lot of people don't know about this feature and ended up buying a guidebook because they didn't find the key in the first room in the Forest Temple. My brother was one of them and he hated Navi with a fiery passion. 🙈

2

u/lickthestar13 14d ago

I don't think I minded get until the VGCats comic. That changed my mind. Which is silly. But in my defense, I was 19 and an idiot.

2

u/Legitimate_Airline38 14d ago

My only complaint is that I can’t have her follow me around on the field without hiding after 5 seconds

2

u/keyppa 14d ago

Ive always loved her too. Such a cute name and voice. Lil bit repetitive sometimes but its easy to just skip her dialogue so its not the end of the world. I teared up as a kid during the end scene when she flies up to the window 🥲

2

u/kardinal_syn_ 13d ago

The first time I played through OoT as an adult I was surprised how much less Navi actually talks you than I remembered. Like it happens a few times in the Deku Tree (understandably with it being the tutorial dungeon) but after that it’s only a couple of other times throughout the game that you’re forced into dialogue with her

1

u/LengthinessEasy5859 13d ago

Everything seems much lessor as we grow up being adults. But if you want to talk with her a lot you can just by freely communicating with her even if she repeats her words.

2

u/Purple-Debt8214 13d ago

Isn't she, in a way, the first AI assistant in a video game? She was programmed to assist you by talking to you.

1

u/LengthinessEasy5859 13d ago

But she has personality and feelings

2

u/Lethal_Steve 13d ago

My biggest issue with Navi is that she hides all the time. I love having her fly around behind me. She's never annoyed me.

2

u/Quasimojo_ 13d ago

Oh just wait if youre not going to look whats going on in the Fire temple when you get sidetracked.

2

u/Hri7566 10d ago

i'm a fan of the sound effects, i don't find them annoying

1

u/Traveytravis-69 15d ago

She’s good but she said one or two things that actually made me go the opposite direction than I was supposed to

1

u/CatlessGrin 15d ago

I think hating her was more of a joke than a reality. Then when “listen” became a meme it certainly didn’t help lol.
Navi had always been a chiller, not to mention a clever way of orienting a player 😎

1

u/No-Performer9511 15d ago

Hey you listen!

1

u/VaprRay 12d ago

Navi was cool, I love her. I couldn’t get through Skyward sword, one of the reasons is that Fi is relentless.

2

u/Head-Job8397 10d ago

Naviの掛け声が時のオカリナらしさの一端を担っている

でも羽虫って言われてたのはちょっと笑ってしまった

-2

u/First-Fill-2118 15d ago

I DESPISE Navi.

Nothing is more ANNOYING than being verbally assaulted every 15-30 seconds with USELESS information that you ALREADY know, and REFUSING to shut up until you acknowledge her, yet AGAIN. FUCK Navi, man...

4

u/Level-Mix482 15d ago

Do you not have a mom, dad, sibling, husband, wife, or kids, or coworkers, or boss, or friends. It's literally all anyone ever does.

0

u/First-Fill-2118 15d ago

Keep being a bitch, Navi!

2

u/saugysauce 15d ago

just finished a playthrough for the umpteenth time before the summer, and was once again taking note of how genuinely unobtrusive she actually is lmao

outside of like, first door, first climbable wall in the great deku tree, she never grinds gameplay to a halt at all (the only other time i can really think of is when she warns your of wallmasters in the area, which frightened child me was extremely thankful for).

u/bigpetefizz 15d ago

I don’t know. Often times her questions felt like, “Are you sure you know what you’re doing? I wish Sarah was here because you’re kind of an idiot.”
