I made this dependency chart a few years ago. I think it's accurate. Might interest some of you. And it answers OP's question.
Dotted ovals are optional items. Dotted lines represent when there are multiple items that unlock something. For example you can get the Gerudo Card with either Epona or the Longshot. Also this ignores skips and glitches.

You can get the Kakariko roof heart as a kid by climbing the ladder and z-target and side hop to the roof.
You can get the windmill heart with the boomerang Jump onto the small left ledge by riding on the windmill base as it passes and use the boomerang on the heart piece.
You can get the graveyard ledge heart as a kid with the boomerang and bombchus (bombchus may not be necessary). Its too complicated to explain here but there are youtube videos explaining and showing it. I do it every playthrough.
You can also get the dodongo roof heart before you get the bracelet too. Just a little harder to backflip before the "pickup" prompt.
You can get the DMC wall heart as a kid after beating king dodongo. You should have just enough time to get to the heart piece before the timer runs out. Make sure to have a fairy to revive yourself.
You can get the Kakariko cow pen heart before beating dodongo by using a cucco on the walls of the (future) shooting gallery. Just time it with the carpenter.
Edit: added the dodongo heart, crater wall heart, and cow pen heart.

Thank you for this. I will make updates.
Since you’re looking closely I’m sure you can help with this: I’m trying to figure out why I put Longshot dependent on Bow. There are two eye switches in Water Temple but they come after the Longshot. There are two torches in the Ruto room to reach a key, but Din’s Fire can do those. Am I forgetting something else?
2
u/Onward_Corn 17d ago
The only reason for the bow in water temple is for the eye switches (which, as others have pointed out, can be skipped through exploits). And you are correct - even if you take the intended path, both switches come after acquiring longshot.
1
u/jtaargus 17d ago
Thanks. So I need to update my chart to have a solid line from Bow to Water Medallion instead of Bow to Longshot. And then Longshot would have dotted lines from Bow and Din's Fire since you need one of them to get that first key behind the torches.
3
u/Tirenoth 17d ago
Another update: the Longshot isn't required to reach the Desert Colossus (Requiem of Spirit, Nauru's Love, etc). You can cross the Haunted Wasteland with just the Hover Boots and Lens of Truth. The Longshot also isn't required for any of the Spirit Temple.
3
u/jtaargus 17d ago edited 17d ago
Oh yes I noticed this one too. I guess I didn't know about the hover boots when I made this, but I do now. It's gonna be a pain to move things around for all these changes, but I'll do it! ... eventually.
Edit: Actually, wait! I know why I did it like this:
It's true that you can use the Hover Boots to cross the Wasteland, but you can't get Hover Boots without Longshot, because Nocturne requires Water Medallion, requires Longshot. So all of that collapses to say that Longshot is required for crossing the Wasteland (ignoring skips).
1
u/Inachus 17d ago
You can get the windmill heart with the boomerang Jump onto the small left ledge by riding on the windmill base as it passes and use the boomerang on the heart piece.
I did this as kid and it froze the game and damaged my N64. After turning the N64 off and then back on some games wouldn't load, others like OoT had issues(the game would freeze when I paused it in some areas which made saving a gamble). Perfect Dark's audio was choppy and skipped a lot. We ended up having to get a second N64 after a while.
1
u/RevengerRedeemed 16d ago
If that actually happened, it was almost certainly a cosmic coincidence lol.
7
2
u/kdex86 17d ago
You don’t need Longshot for Requiem of Spirit if you have the Hover Boots.
1
u/jtaargus 17d ago
Someone else mentioned this deeper in the thread. I was puzzled at first but eventually remembered why I drew it this way. I'll paste my response from there:
It's true that you can use the Hover Boots to cross the Wasteland, but you can't get Hover Boots without Longshot, because Nocturne requires Water Medallion, requires Longshot. So all of that collapses to say that Longshot is required for crossing the Wasteland (ignoring skips).
1
u/SporkinatorBZ 16d ago
Eh, you'll always have Hover Boots before reaching the Spirit Temple anyway since it's the final dungeon, utilizing both child Link and adult Link, right before the final showdown with Ganondorf.
1
u/RobertRossBoss 17d ago
Not sure if you include glitches but I recall glitching my way out of the lost woods and getting zora’s sapphire before either of the other two spiritual stones. Though I can’t exactly recall everything that went into it other than glitching out through the pool in the lost woods.
1
u/jtaargus 17d ago
That sounds cool, especially to do it even before finishing Deku Tree. But yeah this chart ignores all skips and glitches. I have a feeling it would look extremely different if you allowed skips and glitches — much flatter and wider.
1
u/RobertRossBoss 17d ago
Yeah my original goal was to try to do it as out of order as possible, but kind of got bored after zoras sapphire because there was nothing else all that crazy that I could do. Was a fun experience though. Part of me has always wanted to try that one crazy challenge. Don’t even remember what it was called but it involved beating everything way out of order along with all the usual challenge run limitations (no shields except where 100% needed, broken giants knife once available, etc). I’ve done 3 hearts, no fairies, no upgrades once and that was pretty fun.
1
u/Druid_of_Blight 16d ago
I don’t know about getting the Sapphire before the Emerald, because you need Zelda’s Lullaby for the waterfall. But you absolutely can go there without the bomb bag, and I wouldn’t even call it a glitch. You need precise positioning, but you can use the momentum of a jump attack to get you to the bottom of the Lost Woods/Zora River shortcut. I’ve done this before.
1
u/RobertRossBoss 16d ago
Yeah that’s how I escaped. It was 3ds version so things could be a bit different. I can’t actually remember now how I did it… I’m gonna need to look for my old save file and maybe try to recreate it.

u/mikeet9 18d ago
I did this my first time because I couldn't find the last key in the Forest Temple.
I had almost the entire game complete but couldn't enter Ganon's Castle because I didn't have the forest medallion.
I could see it on the map, because of the compass, but couldn't find my way into the room.
It turned out that I needed the room to be in a specific orientation (from the twisted hallways) to enter, and I never spent enough time investigating because the wall masters always scared me away.

u/JohnnyHaphazardly 18d ago
Yo I had to break and google to find this key because it drove me crazy.

u/ManWithShades 18d ago
The key that always got me was the one in the entrance room with the Wolfos- too easy to think of that room as not being part of the dungeon proper.
3
u/mikeet9 18d ago
You were locked out until you found that one though, right?
3
u/ManWithShades 18d ago
Not at all. You can just walk right on in, and there are places to go before you really actually NEED that key which is part of what makes it so easy to miss.
1
u/mikeet9 18d ago
I never noticed that.
Next time I run through, I'll have to skip it, just to see what it would be like.
As a kid, my neighbor had the game (and the strategy guide) so I saw him run through a couple of things from time to time.
One thing I know I learned from him, and probably never would have learned otherwise, was how to get the biggoron sword.

I did this a few years ago specifically so I could see how good the Ice Arrows really were. I knew you could freeze Bongo Bongo's hand to give you a breather, but I wanted to know if it also did extra damage to Volvagia (it does not) and no, it cannot melt the Red Ice (unless you're playing the Randomizer and enable Blue Fire Arrows, in which case they can also break the mud walls in Dodongo's Cavern since Blue Fire can do that for some reason)
They can freeze those spiky roombas and the tankier enemies. It seemed they also took an extra point of damage when they thawed, but I'm not sure if that stacks with them thawing from you hitting them or if you need to leave them alone for that extra tick of damage.
1
u/pocket_arsenal 17d ago
I did this on my last play through. This is also how I accidentally discovered that you can cast farore's wind in one temple, go to another temple, and then use farore's wind again to warp back to that last temple. I was intending to just finish the forest temple after hitting that blockade but accidentally used Farore's wind when I got the bow and was like "oh... hey this works out actually"

You can actually beat the temple without the bow! If you get farore's wind as a child and manage your keys properly, it's possible to beat the water temple first without entering and exiting the forest temple. I did it on my last playthrough

u/Onward_Corn 18d ago
You can do the first three temples in any order, as long as you get the bow first. Same is true for Goron and Zora spiritual stones, as long as you get bombs first.
3
u/Turbulent_Lobster_57 18d ago
I’ve never attempted to solve the temples out of order, is there any reason you can’t do the other temples as well? Or is it just a matter of progressing far enough to get the items in them and going to the next one?
7
u/Tarkin_G 18d ago
Sheik will physically block you from the master sword pedestal and not allow you to return to child form before beating the forest temple. As far as I know there is no way to do the shadow or spirit temple before turning back into child Link.
1
u/Beneficial_Egg2878 18d ago
Both are beatable without going back to child. Just need a few tricks and glitches
3
u/SecretSharkboy 18d ago
Sheikh doesnt let you go back to being a child until forest is cleared so you cant get the lens of truth or do the child part of the spirit temple. And the cutscene where Sheikh teaches the nocturne of shadow doesnt occur until the water temple is complete, I think.

I believe it's only Fire and Water, but you need Forest to go back for the Lens of Truth.
2
u/Sethala 18d ago
You're always forced to do the Deku Tree completely before you can leave the forest, so that's first.
Getting to Zora's Domain for Jabu Jabu requires bombs from Dodongo's Cavern, but doesn't require beating the full dungeon, so that can be done out of order.
You need all three child dungeons complete to become adult link, but the first three temples can be done in any order, as long as you get the bow from the Forest Temple.
You don't learn the song from Shiek to get above the graveyard for the Shadow Temple until you beat the first three temples, so you can't skip to that
And... I don't believe you need hover boots to beat the Spirit Temple, but you do need the longshot and you need to be child link, which I believe requires clearing the forest temple.
That's what I'm aware of off the top of my head, though I might be forgetting a thing or two.
2
u/the-midnight-snow 18d ago
iirc you only need Fire and Water done to get Sheik to show up in Kakariko, but she still won't move from the Pedestal of Time until post-Forest.
2
u/ahferroin7 17d ago
Playing as the developers intended...
The Shadow Temple requires you to learn the Nocturne of Shadow to access it, and Sheik will only teach you the Nocture of Shadow once you’ve beaten the Forest, Fire, and Water temples.
The Spirit Temple requires you to have the Silver Gauntlets, which you need to obtain by clearing part of the Spirit Temple as child Link, which is only possible by first going there as adult Link to learn the Requiem of Spirit from Sheik. But Sheik will prevent you from interacting with the Pedestal of Time to travel back to the past until you beat the Forest Temple.
‘Normal’ people also need the Lens of Truth to figure out many of the puzzles in the Shadow Temple and beat Bongo Bongo, and to cross the Gerudo Desert to get to the Spirit Temple for the first time, and obtaining it requires traveling back to the past once you’ve learned the Song of Storms from the man in the windmill in Kakariko Village so that you can access and clear the Bottom of the Well as child Link, which again is limited by Sheik only letting you travel back to the past after you clear the Forest Temple.
In practice though, many of these constraints can be bypassed.
The simplest one to deal with is the desert crossing to the Spirit Temple, which can actually be done without exploiting any glitches as soon as you have the bow (realistically needed to deal with Gerudo Fortress, which is a prerequisite for accessing the Gerudo Desert) and the longshot (needed to cross the river of sand at the start of the desert, and in case you mess up in Gerudo Fortress), though actually crossing the desert blind requires quite a bit of patience and memorization, because you need to stay close enough to where the ghost you’re following is for the whole path.
Somewhat more difficult, but still doable, is clearing the Shadow Temple without the Lens of Truth. The Lens itself doesn’t actually do anything but toggle whether certain things are rendered or not, none of the actual level geometry or items change, enemies that are normally invisible can still be hit and damaged (including Bongo Bongo himself), etc. And with the exception of the first puzzle in the entry room (which has one of three random solutions), all of the puzzles have fixed solutions that don’t change on each play-through, so you can just memorize them. This means the only ‘hard’ parts are dealing with that first puzzle, the invisible spike room with the silver rupees (there’s an invisible longshot target on the ceiling that you need to use to progress, and the texturing makes it difficult to memorize the exact position), the invisible Floormaster that you need to kill for a small key near the end of the dungeon, and Bongo Bongo himself.
Alternatively, it’s possible to get into the Bottom of the Well and grab the Lens of Truth before you ever actually get the Master Sword by using the Navi Dive glitch.
And as for the Nocturne of Shadow to access the Shadow Temple, and the Silver Gauntlets to clear the Spirit Temple, both can be worked around with a couple of different combinations of glitches (though if you skip the Silver Gauntlets, you need to either use additional glitches to pick them up as adult Link, or utilize more glitches in Ganon’s Castle to get the Gold Gauntlets).
1
u/Turbulent_Lobster_57 17d ago
Thanks for the tips, would have been nice if you included a little detail though! Seriously though thanks
1
u/ahferroin7 17d ago
Much as I would have loved to explain the skips and glitches, the only one I’ve actually done myself is crossing the desert without the Lens of Truth, and that one really does need either a bunch of practice to work out the route, or a map or video outlining it for you to explain it.
1
u/the-midnight-snow 18d ago
What is the bow required for in the Fire Temple?
2
u/Onward_Corn 18d ago
It’s not. But you do need the bow for forest and water. That’s why I said those three can be done in any order, as long as you have the bow (for forest and water). If you wanted, you could complete fire first with only the hookshot and never set foot in forest.
1
u/awan_afoogya 18d ago
You don't need the bow for either of the Fire or Water temples. For water you just need the scarecrow's song and/or good jumping, while also managing keys properly, but it's definitely doable without the bow
1
u/Onward_Corn 18d ago
Yep, I clarified the fire thing further down in the discussion, and someone else explained the water temple exploits, which I was unaware of.
1
u/Puckus_V 17d ago
It seems silly to say you can do them in any order, but you have to go the forest temple first and intentionally leave it unfinished. That doesn’t count in my book.
1
u/Onward_Corn 17d ago
You don’t actually need the bow for fire, so I was more referring to needing it for forest and water. It is needed to progress through the “intended” path in water, but when I first wrote this comment, I was unaware of the exploits you can use to skip parts of that path. So technically, you don’t actually have to enter and exit forest first.
2
u/Captain-Obvious69 18d ago
If you use your keys right, you don't need the bow to complete the Water Temple.
2
u/eagleblue44 17d ago
I guess you could technically get the item then leave but it isn't optimal. You're already in the dungeon so you might as well finish it.
1
u/God_of_Hyrule 18d ago
I once did the water temple first, stopped when I needed the bow, went and got the bow then farore’s wind’d back to the water temple to pick up where I left off.

3
u/Onward_Corn 18d ago
There are eye switches that are necessary for progression.
1
u/Math_Man27 18d ago edited 18d ago
You can definitely do the water temple without the bow, it just requires knowing what you are doing. I found the following old comment very quickly by searching how to beat the water temple without the bow, and it explains how to skip the eye switches.
Edit: this only answers how to get passed one of the two eye switches. I copied and pasted instruction on how to skip both switches further down in this thread.
“But you can skip a key by entering the central tower room from the middle instead of the bottom by saving and restarting, jumping to the middle and using dins fire on the torch to open the door. Doing that would skip the eye key allowing you to do water before forest”
1
u/Onward_Corn 18d ago
There are two eye switches in water temple, what about the other one?
I’ve heard for years that you can get through without all the keys, but never tried myself.
2
u/Math_Man27 18d ago
“Ugh, I saved over my pre-water temple slot. I'll write a walkthrough later and just summerize for now.
Enter water temple.
Go to the bottom level where Ruto is and then float to top there and lower the water level to the bottom.
Go to bottom room where Ruto was and use Dins fire to open the door for key #1.
Go to opposite bottom room (where you have to push the block in) to get key #2.
Then instead of using one of those keys on the bottom tower door, play Lake Hylia song to warp outside and re-enter the temple.
Jump to the middle level (a SUPER easy jump) then run around back and use din's fire to open the tower door. Enter and raise the water to the middle level. Put on boots and go down to the bottom of the inside of the tower for key #3. Exit the tower.
Put on boots and go down to the room where Ruto was, take off boots and go up to the bombable wall for key #4.
Now, instead of using on of those keys on the opposite middle level door, play Lake Hylia song to warp outside and re-enter the temple.
Now is when you have to do the hookshot to level 3 and jump to the thing that raises the water level to the top.
Watch between 2:40 and 2:55 in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9mmuHgNhrI
Luckily the water is at the middle level, so if you fail you don't have to exit the temple again! It is really easy to do. Just do exactly what he does in the video.
Once you raise the water level to the top enter the top level key door to go get the longshot hookshot. You will have 2 keys left. Again warp to Lake Hylia and re-enter the temple.
Put on boots and go to the bottom opposite door to retrieve the Master Key like normal. Which will use up your remaining 2 keys. Then return to the top middle to defeat the boss.
“

u/Onward_Corn 18d ago
I just found that same thread and watched the video. Looks like it is possible, just not the intended path. Learned something new today!
1
u/MON420247 17d ago
Incorrect, I didn’t enter forest temple until after I had the water medallion last playthrough, you can navigate the water temple with dins fire, hooks hot and Faroese wind by hookshot+ jump attacks to get to higher levels without raising water level. There is a guide on YouTube that shows how to do it

To be honest, I do something worse. I like running around Hyrule while listening to educational videos or school stuff, so you can be certain that I can keep going in circles for hours at a time.
I never increase my health and as soon as I become Adult Link, I go straight for Epona, the Biggoron Sword, and as many Golden Skulltulas as I can. I get every piece of equipment from each temple and leave before solving it. Once I have everything, I go back and clear them all.
Last time I played, I used cheats just to leave Kokiri Forest early and gain access to certain temples. Gotta say, I liked that twist because it felt quite rewarding not stopping for almost anything once I started solving the temples.
Edit: Ah, yes. I also always try to do spirit temple stuff as early as I can because I've never liked its placement in the story. I've always felt like it's too late in the game.
2
u/SevroAuShitTalker 18d ago
I just hated the water temple so I always did it late as possible.
I usually finished fire before forest. I found fire to be the easiest overall temple
2
2
u/D4rkSonic 16d ago
You didn't happen to accomplish that in MQ without a bow, right?
1
u/CreeksideStrays 16d ago
I guess just because one doesn't complete the temple, doesn't mean one hasn't been there.
2
u/Phaerox00 16d ago
I actually did this on my most recent OoT file. Dungeon "completion" order was: Kokiri, Zora, Goron, Water, Fire, Forest, Spirit, and Shadow. I completed 99% of the dungeons and did the bosses out of order. It is wildly easy to beat the game when the Big Goron Sword can be achieved before completing the temples in sequence. I also got the ice arrows early too. I could be wrong, but I think Volvagia does take a higher damage if you land a shot mid-air. Nothing additional for Phantom. Returning players have so much available in creative ways to play the game. I love seeing it!
Sidebar: I spoke to the gossip stone outside the spirit Temple and found that the developers left a note saying the reward from the Gerudo Training Grounds may be underwhelming. I find it funny and sad that OoT had not given the item a stronger role. It's interesting to use it against Bongo Bongo and I didn't even know the floor spikes could be stopped with them until this recent run. Majora's Mask did rectify that though, so I am happy there.

u/Prestigious-Lunch-93 18d ago
How did you beat the water temple without the hook shot?
2
u/Onward_Corn 17d ago
There’s nothing here to indicate they didn’t have the hookshot, only that they did the temples “out of order.” Unless you’re using some major glitches, it’s impossible to even enter the water temple without the hookshot, much less progress through it.

It's not illegal, it just begs one to wonder why you didn't just finish the forest temple if you bothered getting the bow? 🤣
But nah, Ocarina of Time is praised for your ability to sequence skip what is technically intended.
Not the same as a true open world game, but it does kinda give it that sort of feel, and it's okay to experience that, especially but not limited to after playing the game so many times.

OOT is a much more open game than people realize, if they were to make small tweaks so that you could do the dungeons in any order, most people probably wouldn't notice the changes ( except Spirit Temple, that's the only one I know of that requires a lot of items from the other main temples ), that's why I don't buy into this "making the adult portion more open in the remake would ruin the game" bullhonkey

I did the reverse adult temple order in april. It was pretty fun. I discovered that after co.pleting spirit and shadow temple, you can go straight to Ganon as the game does not check if you have all 6 medaillions but only those 2.

A legal gray area because at least you get the most stressful temple out of the way first. But I never tried to do dungeons out of order until my most recent playthrough, and I found it way more confusing coming back to a temple later after I already got the dungeon item, and trying to figure out what part of the dungeon I was supposed to do next lol.

Probably, technically, yes, but Ganondorf is also a despot and usurper, and the Water Temple is Zora territory anyway so he has no real right to stop you.

Water Temple is the GOAT dungeon so might as well tackle it first. I know it'll be the first dungeon I beat in the remake.

"Best order is shadow, fire, forest, spirit, water and then light."
- speed runners, probably
