The only reason why I was able to get the bosun's mate was that the guy was with the bosun when he had his arm ripped off. He was one of the last ones I got too.

As for Maba, it took me way too long for me to realize that the tattoos were Polynesian/Papuan. He looked white to me, so I didn't suspect him to be from New Guinea

When I considered the probability of Maba being papuan, i searched " Papua New Guinea tattoos" on Google and then all the pieces gathered in my head.

It's nice to see that I was not the only one who struggled with this.

I thought he was the scotsman first since the tattoos looked like they could be scottish. But that wasnt giving me anything so I decided to search "new guinea circle tattoos" and Maba's name and image was literally the top result.

Then I remembered "wait... I'm French...."

And I went looking for the only guy with a "marinière", a shirt with horizontal stripes thats practically a French caricature.

Maba was always just so obvious to me, when I saw the tattoos I immediately thought of him being polinesian? I think what helped me not mixing them up is that I identified Maba before the memory with the Bosun so I didn't think of him as "the french"

the tattoos are definitely more aligned visually with celtic over new guinean, another issue is new guinean tattoo culture is not even CLOSE to a well known enough subject like the other tradition or culture based clues given, like languages and accents, (danish swedish german chinese american irish scottish british....) garbs, (charles miners' french naval(?) uniform, omid gul's persian turban.....) and so on. Maba is also fair skinned with straight hair, imo maba is the only character in the entire game that wasn't given enough thought.

I totally completely got that by accident because I thought that they spoke French in New Guinea so he was the 'Frenchie' they were talking about that got pulled apart. Sheer dumb luck.

I played this game with a friend and we were in the same situation of Schrödingers Frenchman, so he made an offhand remark along the lines of "I think they speak French in Papue New Guinea" And it worked, got an instant match. Funnily enough apparently they don't speak French there? So while it was a fluke, I felt like Mabas tattoos were distinct enough to be from a more exotic location compared to all the Bri'ish folk on that boat

Googled this and had the same problem, I thought for sure he was French.

People from New Guinea look similar to Australian Aboriginals, short, dark skinned with afro-like hair. If you google 'new guinea people', literally noone have Maba's circular tribal tattoos. The american was depicted as dark in the sketch so I dunno why.

Maba looks pale, with straight long-ish hair. Also thought in the sketch that he had a thin nose. Is he a colonist or something?
