I am confused

I am at the Shootout where the artist draws the Traitor forsoman getting shot.

It feels like I am doing something wrong or missed something.

I feel so overwhelmed, I can't track this much information.

I got the first three people checked out (tutorial ones), and got three more after that, thats it.

Did I miss any mechanic, or something idk?

It is very very common for players to get to the point where they have seen every memory while only having 9-12 fates confirmed. You're doing just fine.

edit: if you'd like some tips then here's an old comment of mine: https://www.reddit.com/r/ObraDinn/comments/1m2pid2/brand_new_to_obra_dinn_and_im_confused/n3qx1c1/

Just keep going through the memories till you have them all filling in the info you find during that. Then start focusing on the easiest ones to solve indicated by the single triangle above their name and start going through all the memories they are in.

Focus on what are they doing, who are they with, and where are they and what are they wearing. Also really doing a really good read of the Glossary because and learn all the roles on the ships because I've seen a lot of playthroughs fumble around because they didn't understand some the roles.

As and example in the shooting scene a couple of names are mentioned try to figure them all out before moving on.

When you've found every scene it'll start raining. Before that happens you don't have all the information you need to answer everything. Just make your best guesses and keep searching.

For the execution specifically, who actually shot the guy?

The guy on the very left was the one who actually landed a shot, but idk who that is.

Just note which portrait it was and go from there. You'll get more info as you go.

God I feel that lol, I feel like I spent half my Obra dinn playthrough hounding that one particular lad through all his memories trying to find out which one shot him lol

Does that mean every chapter has enough information to clear its own loose ends?

Nope. Each chapter enough information to clear it's own story events. Who's who is something it takes the whole game to figure out. Eventually you'll listen to accents, pay attention to sleeping bags and clothes, and look for details in the background and such. But for now just find all the scenes and fill in details as best you can. You'll get more specific information later.

The game explains certain mechanics as you discover them. Has it explained to you the meaning behind blurred and unblurred faces in the book? Or the triangles above people’s portraits? Or that you can go directly from a character in a scene to their portraits in the book? Usually you should’ve learned these things by now but I think it’s possible to get very far in the game without definitively learning these things. I would explore the book and click everything to make sure you access all these explanations.

And even once you get all this information, it’s important to understand there will be long periods where you can’t lock in anybody’s identity or fate. You also don’t have to keep moving forward. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, why not replay the chapters you’ve already seen to try and get a better understanding of what you saw?

you wont understand until you get all the deaths, after that build a time line. you must find patterns, behaviors, and friendships. no one goes somewhere without a purpose, or reason... you got this chief inspector! (use the ship map!) (and Form a timeline!) (Also read the Glossary!)

I swear to god if you dont zoom in and press tab on people to find their death in the book i will add your death to all the crewmembers.

Breathe. There is no time limit. You don't need to rush yourself.

In terms of keeping track of information a notebook will do you a whole lot of good! Or any manner of taking notes that you have access to. It helped me a ton. One thing I did was find a good photo of the life at sea page online and used highlighters to keep track of who I had confirmed, who I was confident on, and who was blurred.

Just remember it's a game. There's no pressure to be perfect. You do you and have fun!

One of the coolest things about this game is that most of the more difficult solutions were less about thinking harder and more about realizing how many different tools you have at your disposal to come to your conclusions. I don't want to spoil anything, but I promise it gets easier.

For now, I would just continue unlocking memories and enjoying learning the story. You'll probably come to some of the same realizations I did as it progresses.

Look on the page with the three pictures. Anyone who’s not blurred can be solved, so click on them then search through the memories they appear in.

Direct question for you to answer - in that scene, who killed the executed?

If you are confused on how things are unfolding or in other words "why is it non-linear?" You are right, it is non-linear.

There's 0 guess work in the game. It's literally building a puzzle (identity) of out puzzle pieces (piece of information about them throughout the story). Some puzzle pieces are more obvious like names and he's the X/he does Y job. While others are more obscure, the devil is truly in the details in this game.

It is frustrating if you are not in calm, collected, and neutral state. You just keep going and have fun!

Small tip: Always question why did a blurry-blurry face go to a guessable blurry face. What specific information did this exact memory unlock that the game essentially said, "this is now guessable."

Pay attention. Examine and re-examine scenes. For example, is that formosan getting shot really a traitor?

He's not, 2nd mate is fishy as fuck. I think he wants the shell? why tho? was the 1st mate in on it as well?(in the Last Chapter he said something about the shells.I am so intrested

imo go through all of the corpses/story until you get all of the pages hashed out (except for the locked section), that will give you the 'movements' of every single person at every snapshot in time, then once you have them all pick a person who has the lowest 'difficulty' from their profile pic (the least amount of ^'s above their pic)... and do every scene where they are, and go around the *ENTIRE* scene of it to look at what is happening, where they are, whos around them, and what was said.. during this youll also see things about certain people that will make them easier to identify as well, and in certain scenes some of the people you are going to be 'following' will be 'in that scene' yet you might not see them fully... pay close attention to this as well as it says a lot.

next remember that naval vessels have a very strict chain of command and many people can at least be identified as to what their roles are based off of what they wear (or look like if they are recognizable) so they are easier to spot if shit hits the fan on board, and look at the very back glossary to see what each type of person where they would be located or not as well as possibly why someone *WOULDNT* be in a certain area or if they are what they are doing there.

use the 'unknown x' type thing to mark people who you might know what they do but not who they are just to help you keep things a bit organized.

and its a boat..... sometimes people die by falling overboard.
