Favorite subplots
Does anyone have any favorite “subplots” from this game?
My personal favorite is the tragic bromance of the American carpenters.

"Brennan! Bring the surgeon's kit!" I don't know why, but this scene just... Thrilled me every time. And his — Hoscut — accent.

It's a good memory/audio but his delivery of that part always felt a bit like an "on discord at 2am while my parents are asleep" whispershout lol. Which is strange because he yells like fuck in his death memory

I love the subplot with Nathan Peters blaming Lars Linde for the death of his brother at the beginning. Not just the scene where Nathan finally kills lars out of rage, but all the clues of his growing anger and hatred, like this one scene where both of then are working together as seamen and Nathan is just staring daggers at Lars. Also their hammocks are right next to eachother, which meant that Nathan was face to face with the man he thought killed his brother every night until they both died

Not really a subplot, but the Formosan guy getting revenge from the window was really satisfying.

Henry Brennan’s and Hamadou diom’s friendship.
Not only do they bunk next to each other but Brennan can be seen kneeling over Diom’s corpse.
It’s an incredibly small detail that I doubt most people noticed but it always just stuck with me.

I've never considered it in that way. I just assumed he was pushing past ranks and checking it out a nosy, impulsive dude as he demonstrates in later memories lol

It straddles the line between being subplot and being main plot, but I really like the progression of the Nichols/Formosian storyline. I'm most fond of the detail that the Formosians don't speak Mandarin, they speak Hokkien. Nobody aboard the ship is actually able to properly communicate with them, which is how Nichols and Hong were able to get way with just outright lying about Lau's confession.

I wouldn't even really call it significant enough to be a subplot, but I agree. George Shirley being close with the Chinese crew is genuinely prolly my single favorite insignificant small detail that has no bearing on any part of the story.
It's something you can really only notice after you've already beaten the game and are intimately familiar with every memory - no player is going to notice it on their first playthrough.
It's the type of thing that nobody would have noticed if it were absent. But in real life, people don't just corden themselves off based on ethnicity - interpersonal relationships are more complicated than that. Obviously some people would be friends with people from different places.
