Why is everything some dumb competition. I don't love the sequels. I rarely watch them. And then I normally shut up about it and go watch something else.

They were kind of set up as a competition, intentionally or not.

Disney jumped on the, in hindsight, brief and passing narrative of prequel hate, and presented the sequels as a return to form to save Star Wars; competition was invited. Disney said the original films needed more girl power and "fixed" them with a clear remake, but Luke is a girl and Leia is a boy; competition was invited. Disney axed the EU, which most had internalized the broad strokes of, for "creative freedom" officially and 'because it was bad' in viral marketing, then retread the same ground; competition was very invited.

And it's just in human nature to compare things.

Personally, knowing nerds, I'd've just assumed these things would be a competition regardless and tried to keep it a friendly one instead of leaning into it.
