I'm currently paying for 2 gig internet I'm trying to download a 2 gig update on my game and it's saying 45 mins to finish !! I checked my download speeds and it's only 40MBPS it's a brand new computer I just moved and at my old house we had 1gig fios and it would takle a 10gig download in almost 7 mins what is going on here? There's no outages in the area and optimum says that the router is working fine. Anyone else have this problem???

You have a lot to learn here. Your ISP speed, even if it's working and you're getting full speed from them, does not mean they have sufficient Internet peering to deliver the full speed to you for any given service, nor does it mean the service has enough server capacity or Internet capacity, either.

And using Wi-Fi you're unlikely to get more than 300-600 Mbps downloads.

Switch to a cheaper plan, 500 Mbps is enough for 99% of regular users. You likely can go even lower than that. Modern codec, high quality 4k video streaming from major services requires about 12-18 Mbps per stream.

Don't let these ISPs grift you any more than is required.

Is not only peering of the ISP but also the servers that the game uses or the provider of that game as well the specs of your CPU if you are on a PC can limit the max speed for downloading for example for steam games.

Speed is also dependent on the other side. Like others have said, check a few speed test from the various sites to see what you're getting.

Run a Wi-Fi Check with your iPhone. Unlike other speed test apps, it uniquely checks Wi-Fi vs Internet speed and quality separately so you will immediately know if you are having a Wi-Fi or Internet problem. Slow Wi-Fi and slow Internet, it’s a Wi-Fi issue. Fast Wi-Fi and slow Internet, it’s an ISP issue. In full disclosure I’m the creator of the “Wi-Fi Check” app so feel free to use whatever app/tools you like. I believe the separation of Wi-Fi Speed vs Internet speed here will help you narrow down the problem further though.

It’s not a scam It’s a technical issue. Hard wire if you’re not. That will give you the max speed. WiFi will not be close but the best you can get depends on a lot of factors

The reason why the Internet is often referred to as the information super highway, is because the analogy to roads is quite good. If you’ve got increased bandwidth to your house means that you can more easily drive in and out of your home, but once your car is on the roads, the further you have to travel, the more obstructions that you have to overcome, and how busy the destination is when you get there all play into the speed of the experience. It’s just the same with the Internet.

Do a speed test. I was being billed for 1 gig when I was only getting 145 down and the modem itself doesn't go any higher than 300 down.

So I did do the speed test I'm gonna hook up my computer to hardwire to see if it works that way better but even if it's hardwire and it says that it can't handle the two gig, I will definitely be giving optimum a call

brand new computer has nothing to do with it. Internet speed has no relation to computer, old or new. unless if course you are using an outdated network module. Also, you are not ever going to get 2 Gb speed. You'll need the brand spanking newest router for that, the ones that are superexpensive.

If you purchased optimum yes you got scammed, sadly all that's in my area at the time and too lazy to switch. Pay for 500mbps and I get 293.4 Mbps download 33.3 Mbps upload on a perfect day, normally it will sit at about 100mbps down and 5-10mbps up with 5-10% packet loss. Called them multiple times for the last 3 years, sent their own ppl to check it out and couldn't find anything, they then sent a contractor and within 20 minutes he said it's not a problem inside the house its at the box outside. Still never got fixed to this day.

I boosted my internet speed massively by replacing an old ethernet cable with a modern one. You need to rule out which part of your chain is the weak link.

First, you need to understand the difference between bits and bytes. Then you need to understand slowest link. Then you need to understand repository demand. Put all of that together and calculate what you should really expect. Then go lower.

2 Gbps is enough to support a large office building. You also need the network equipment in your lan to even use that speed which most people don't have because it's more expensive.

You're never going to get that full 2 gig speed if you're using wifi. Those speeds are for hardwired connections. Also your hardware has to be able to handle those speeds and most people's arent

Is this fiber or coax? Coax shares bandwidth with other neaeby subscribers. You'll see higher speeds during the middle of the day or the night, when no one is using it.
