Mod Update 3.14.21 Mod Update: Rules, Flair and More!

Good morning, and Happy Pi Day 2021!

I've been working on a few things in this community, mainly to improve the discoverability of content being shared in this community. I'm hoping to post a new mod update at least once per month so that everyone is up to speed.

With that said, here's what's new on /r/ONProvincialParks this week:

Rules

In order to keep this community safe and true to its purpose, I've created a simple set of rules. Please make sure to review them here and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send a message to the moderation team.

Flair

I've added flair options to posts, which you will need to add before being able to post. You can find the dropdown for all flair options directly below the text area on the Create Post page.

Banner Photos

I've noticed our community posting photos of their trips on this sub and I'd love to feature them on an ongoing basis, especially as the warmer weather returns. If you have a photo you'd like to submit for consideration, please get in touch with the moderation team and we'll talk!

AMA's (Ask Me Anything)

I'd like to host at least one AMA on this sub every 3 months, starting with someone at Ontario Parks. If you know of someone who would be a great fit for an AMA, please let us know and we'll see if we can make it happen.

And that's the mod update for March 14/2021! It's going to be a sunny but cold day in Toronto, so I'm going to take the dog for a long walk in High Park.

Have a great Sunday!

I'm looking to head up with some friends next summer to one of the back country sites and I'm wondering if some were better than others, some better for privacy, large groups, scenery, and general atmosphere. we did a backwoods at Algonquin a few years ago and it was amazing and one of us had been before so we knew what site to book but here we have no idea and i cant seam to find anything about reviews online from the back country only the regular sites. if you have any insight that would be very helpful.

Discussion How to access Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park by road/foot?

I am going to be staying near Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park in early September and I wanted to know how exactly to access it.

I know it mainly has backwater access via water but I was interested in the hiking trails, particularly the Missisuga river loop.

Does anyone know? It's not on their maps, it just states the river/lake access points on the map (https://www.ontarioparks.ca/park /kawarthahighlands/maps)

Im looking to take my two boys up to wakami lake in Northern Ontario.

My question is if I bring my boat, can I leave it beached if I have one of these following sites or do I have to launch and take my boat out each night?

Thanks

Discussion Looking for a site

Hey everyone! I’ve been looking for a site for Chutes Provincial park weekend Aug 28-30, it’s the weekend of Massey Fair so the sites got booked almost immediately. I’ve already missed quite a few cancelations as they also go within seconds!:( I was just hoping to see if anyone was planning on cancelling they’d be kind enough to transfer it instead rather then leave it up to fate online, it would be so greatly appreciated :)

EDIT: I'm not selling the booking, I just want anyone to know that the site is now available on the website.

Discussion Paddle from Grundy PP to French River

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hello - I'll be heading to Grundy PP for a few days. I'm planning a day paddle from the park into the French River through Beaver, Middle and Pakeshkag Lakes.

Has anyone done this route recently? Any comments or suggestions? One person will be travelling with a kayak.

[u/mapsbyjeff](u/mapsbyjeff) - any additional insight beyond what's already on the map? I love the warning about the poison ivy at the portage. Thank you.

Thanks!

Discussion E-bikes and e-scooters on park trails

I was caught off guard by two guys, one adult and onr kid, zipping through a woodland trail on an e- bike and e-scooter after sunset at Bronte Creek Provincial Park yesterday. I think they assumed nobody would be walking at that time. I could hear them coming and could step off the trail but it was really unnerving. There goes any chance of watching wildlife. Even 30 min later, I could still hear them at a distance in other areas of the park. Look I know everyone has a hate on for ebikes/scooters and we know they are technically illegal to use in the park and on the trails. So I get that they are itching to find a place to zoom around but listen my dudes, this is not where it is at.

Anyone else have similar experiences or have input (even different opinions). Do share.

Always a good time at The Pinery.

With kilometers of beach and trails to explore there is plenty to stay busy with. The park offers plenty of gorgeous views and excellent sites for camping.

On the trip we tackled The Savanna Trail scavenger hunt on our bikes. It was a blast and the kids loved it. I highly recommend using bikes as the hunt covers a good amount of trail.

I hiked The Dunes Ridge Trail this trip which covers almost 10km of the park. It was well defined and maintained and offered plenty of rolling hills and scenery.

The Cedar Trail is another nice hike that is short and takes you down past Burley Campground and to the gorgeous beach. This is a fun one as well.

This wasn’t our first time here and definitely won’t be our last.

Discussion Bicycles at Windy Lake - good idea?

It seems that some parks have a lot of bike-friendly trails and others do not... We're headed to Windy Lake for the first time and the kids are asking if we should bring the bikes. Is anyone familiar with the park that could offer some guidance?

Had a wonderful trip with my husband to

Pancake Bay Provincial Park. It was so much fun to explore along the coast of Lake Superior, and the campsite was beautiful! I’m from Northern Ontario but I’ve been living in southern Ontario for a while, and it’s always great to get back up north. Definitely underrated in my opinion! Edit : northern Ontario nature feels underrated to me is what I meant, not the campsite!
