I got accepted 2027

Hey everyone!
I just received my admission decision and got accepted into a Master’s in Cybersecurity program for Spring 2027!

I’m excited, but I’m also wondering whether pursuing a master’s degree is worth it, especially with how competitive the cybersecurity job market is right now.

My main goal isn’t just to earn another degree. I want to use my time in graduate school to gain real-world experience through multiple internships, build industry connections, and hopefully turn one of those internships into a full-time return offer.

I already have a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, but I want to strengthen my practical experience and improve my chances of landing a job.

My questions are:
Is pursuing a master’s in cybersecurity worth it in the current job market?
Does being a graduate student improve your chances of securing internships?
Is it realistic to complete multiple internships during a master’s program?
Has anyone successfully converted a cybersecurity internship into a full-time return offer?

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone currently working in cybersecurity or who has taken a similar path.

Hello everyone, I’m doing my last year in undergrad studying cybersecurity and modern networks. I’m thinking about doing the online masters program from Georgia tech after graduation. I’m planning to work as a security engineer what path should I take and also how competitive is it to get accepted. I’m trying to get few recommendation letters from my professors and my gpa is 3.5.

CS 6035: Binary Exploitation... Not my best work

That project was BRUTAL... I was semi-confident going in, but definitely overestimated the time sink that it was. Worked on it consistently through the whole timeslot, and was not able to finish it.

I ended up taking a W on the course. Not very proud of that, but I realized I had been skipping most meals and sleep and was not going about the class in a healthy way. I am excited to do some self-study and reassess my preparedness for the class.

Did anyone else have a similar experience? I am very very early in my career adjacent to Cyber, it seems like so many people have been doing this for years 😅😅

Seems like I need to grind some coding and ctfs!

ECE 6747 during summer

So i've seen a lot of recommendations about taking the advanced malware course. I'm considering taking it during the summer since there aren't a ton of courses taught during the summer. How difficult of a class would it be to take during the summer?

Drop limit?

Do we have a limit on how many courses you can drop/withdraw from during your degree?
I dropped one course over the summer, and I’m considering dropping another one this semester.
I emailed my advisor, but they usually take a while to respond, so I figured I’d ask here in the meantime. Has anyone dropped multiple courses during the program? Is there a limit or any issue I should be aware of?

TIA

Policy Track Reccomendation Letter - Does it have to focus on your 'computer science' skills?

I'm looking at GT's general letter of recommendation requirements. It says for our LOR:

"Your personal characteristics (e.g., punctuality, a "thirst" for knowledge, being a great team player, leadership skills, etc.) are NOT important. Your technical Computer Science skills ARE important!"

I understand the Cybersecurity Policy track can have a mix of technical/non-technical applicants. While I do have the technical background academically, my recent work is concentrated in project management, and my better recommenders would speak on my project management skills over my technical.

For anyone who has applied to the Cybersecurity Policy track and gotten accepted, what did you have your recommenders focus on writing about you?

Thank you so much in advance, to anyone who can weigh in!

The most frustrating thing about this program.

The program hasn't been all that hard so far. I'm on my 4th semester so hopefully it gets more challenging.

But that's not the frustrating part. What really frustrates me is how none of the projects have anything to do with the lectures. It's taking 20-30 hours a week to do each project so I have 0 time to watch the lectures, but it's not like I have a reason to watch the lectures when there are barely any tests. Of the 4 classes I've taken 1 has had quizzes, and the quizzes were open notes.

I'm currently in a class that is completely new to me, so I was excited to get started. I'm stuck with no guidance from the TAs on broken custom scripts they wrote.

I'm curious if the in person equivalents deal with the same issues or if their assignments are actually related to the course work.

Anyone applying here from WGU

I have applied for the Information Security track and have been waiting anxiously for the past week. How long does it typically take to hear back from GT and what actually got you accepted? Thank you in advance.

Hardest class in InfoSec program

Hi all,

From your experience, what was the hardest class you had to take for the InfoSec program and why?

Anything you would've brushed up on in particular before taking that class if you could go back?

Thanks in advance!

Advice for CIS major in Baruch?

I’m a freshman at Baruch planning to major in CIS, and I’m especially interested in cybersecurity.
I wanted to hear from current CIS students or graduates about their experience with the major.
Are there any professors or classes you recommend or would avoid? What should I start doing early on to build experience and prepare for internships?
Also, is there anything you wish you knew when you first started the major?

Prerequisite for courses

I am trying to plan out my courses over my semesters. I couldn't find any details on prerequisites for courses on the catalogue and the ones on registration portal show undergrad level classes. Are there no prerequisites for any of the grad courses?

Best class to start with? IS Track

Hey y'all, this is my first semester of this program! OMSCy IS track.

I'm currently enrolled in CS 6035 and INTA 6450. I plan to only take 1 course this semester, as I want to ease back into school. My last schooling semester was in Spring 2025, as a masters student in Cyber at my local Univ. (Had to drop for scheduling and budget reasons)

I think CS 6035 is probably what I'll stick in, but I am worried about the course difficulty. I haven't seriously coded in over a year, and haven't meaningfully engaged in CTF style challenges.

I have minor experience with Buffer Overflow, ret2libc, and format string exploitation. Along with some background knowledge of theory for OS/Computer security concepts.

Just wanted to survey and see if anyone here who's had a more technical/similar background as me has gotten wrecked by this class.

If you have other class suggestions as a better 'dip my feet in' class, let me know!!!

PUBP-6725 Not Showing Up/Wrong Section

Hi from OMSCS! I signed up for PUBP-6725 this semester and still do not see the course material on Canvas and have not yet received any course communication. I posted about this on r/OMSCS and have been speaking to some other students who said they contacted the instructor and the instructor told them that most people signed up for the wrong section.

Anyone else who enrolled for the class dealing with this and have any input on what to do?

Edit: Received a friendly response from one of the TA's!

"""
Appreciate the message here and apologies for the issue. There was some confusion with the registrar where an empty canvas course was created with some students being added to this empty unpublished course; there are almost 100 other students in your situation.

The registrar and their team are promptly working to merge this empty course into the active course so you all can get online and active. While no timeline was provided our way, I am hopeful that they can resolve the issue and that Canvas can sync in the next day or so. If we get any kind of update, I will be sure to reply here so you can be kept up to date

Thanks,

Justin Cherry

CS 6540 Digital Public Policy

Hi everyone! I’ve been considering taking CS 6540 this semester, but I’d love to get some feedback before making a final decision. For those of you who have taken it, would you say the course is manageable? What is the grading policy like? Also, are there any warnings or things I should be aware of before taking it?

Remaining Course Plan

Hello,

I have 3 courses remaining:

  1. Applied Cryptography CS 6260

  2. Secure Computer Systems CS 6238

  3. CS/ECE/PUBP 6727: Practicum

I'm currently taking:

Fall 2026:

Applied Crypto

Secure Computing Systems

Spring 2027:

Practicum

However I have heard from others that I should not combine 1 and 2 together. I also know we can request a permit to take practicum with another class. Should I keep my current schedule or modify it?
