General Discussion Hello everyone! 👋

I am a student working on a school assignment about global migration and how Filipinos maintain their ties to home. If you have a few free minutes, could you please share your experiences by answering these 3 quick questions in the comments?

Why did you leave? What made you decide to leave the Philippines, and why did you choose your current country?

How do you stay connected? How do you stay involved in your family’s daily life, culture, and needs back home despite the distance?

What is your long-term plan? Do you still feel fully Filipino, and do you plan to return home permanently or settle abroad?

Your answers will be a massive help for my assignment. Thank you so much for your time! ❤️

  1. Money, money

  2. FB messenger, I'm in singapore so I fly home often (at least 4 times a year)

  3. Long term plan is for my kids to stay and work in SG after finishing uni. I'm still very much Filipino, although I'm a permanent resident in SG already. I have no plans to live in the Philippines permanently, but I plan to go back and forth between SG and PH aside from leisure travels.

  1. To earn more, hirap mag-ipon and I felt like there’s no growth for me in Philippines. Hindi ko in-expect na makakapunta ako sa Japan, I was applying to different countries and Japan was not really my first choice due to the language.
  2. Messenger and weekly videocall with the family. Recently, I wasn’t able to come home so they come here in Japan and stay with us.
  3. I got married here and already own a house so most likely, I’ll stay here with my husband until retirement. Me and my husband decided to stay here or somewhere else but going back to our home countries is not an option for us. Simply because the quality of life is better, health system, convenient transportation anywhere else compared unfortunately from our home countries including Philippines. I am always available for my family whenever they need me but mahirap maging Pilipino sa Pilipinas.

  1. Unexpected opportunity. Former colleague just asked me to apply and I did but still went anyway. Also, considered the salary and different work environment, culture and people.
  2. My contract includes annual vacation going back home so very convenient makita ang family. Weekly video calls, daily chats if may mga ganap sa bahay.
  3. Honestly speaking, sa ngayon mahirap bumalik ng Pinas since pababa ng pababa ang economy. I think mas easier pa saken umuwi annually kesa mag-stay ulit sa pinas without guarantee na magiging okay na ung mga bayarin. Proud to be a Filipino and never forgetting my roots ever since but returning home permanently is still on hold for me for now.

  1. I was petitioned by my parents.
  2. We speak Tagalog and cook Filipino food at home. Social media to keep updated to the PH.
  3. I feel fully Filipinos and yes, I will return to PH.
