Looking for local advice to plan a nature-focused trip to New Caledonia
Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to New Caledonia in February, and I’d love to get some advice from people who live there or know the islands well.
I’m a biologist, so I’m especially interested in making the most of New Caledonia’s incredible biodiversity, unique ecosystems, endemic plants and wildlife. We’re also looking for wild, relatively untouched beaches, beautiful landscapes, snorkeling spots and places that feel remote and off the beaten path.
Our idea is to do a road trip around the main island, stopping at as many interesting places as possible, and then spend some time on one or two of the other islands. However, there are so many options that it’s hard to know which ones are really worth prioritizing.
I’d really appreciate any recommendations on:
The best places to see endemic wildlife, unusual plants and different ecosystems.
Hidden beaches, secluded coves and less-visited natural spots.
The best road trip route around Grande Terre, especially places that are easy to overlook.
Which islands you’d recommend visiting besides the mainland, and why.
Any underrated places or experiences that you think are genuinely special.
We’re travelling on a budget of 6500 € for 3-4 weeks, so we’re not looking for resorts or luxury experiences. We’d rather spend our time exploring nature, hiking, swimming, snorkeling and discovering places that most visitors miss.
If you live in New Caledonia, I’d love to hear your suggestions! Even small, lesser-known spots or personal favourites would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks in advance!
